No Longer The Land Of The Free

Sometimes things in life change so slowly that you do not realize how things have actually changed significantly until you sit back and reflect on where you are relative to where you were. The other day, while sitting at a spring training baseball game, I listened to the singing of the national anthem which of course includes the words, “land of the free.” I realized how far we have allowed the political class to take us away from that concept, “the land of the free.” Reflect for a moment on the following conditions and how those conditions deny us the freedom we may have had at one point in the past:

You cannot be free if all levels of government take about 40% of your annual income in order to support itself and perpetuate itself. According to the Tax Foundation, the average American household worked until May 29 in 2009 in order cover all of the political class’s spending including covering the deficit spending by the Federal government. According to the Tax Foundation, the average American household now sends more money to the political class in taxes than it spends on clothing, food, and housing combined. By taking 40% of our income every year, the government denies and restricts us the freedom of choice to send our kids to a better school, support a charity as we would like, start a small business, buy a better home, or just to do anything we want with the money we earned. If you do not have financial freedom, due to excessive taxation, you are not free.
You cannot be free if the political class gerrymanders Congressional districts in order to guarantee that incumbents and the incumbent party is almost impossible to defeat. According to retiring Senator Evan Bayh, he estimates that about 15 Congressional districts, out of 435, are truly competitive. Republican gerrymandered districts will almost always elect a Republican Congressman or woman and Democratic gerrymandered districts will almost always elect a Democratic Congressman or woman. Thus, if you are a Democrat living in a Republican district, your vote will almost always be useless since you have been lumped into a district configured to be overwhelmingly Republican, and the same for a Republican living in a Democratic district. If you vote is useless, you are not free.
You cannot be free if the political class decides when and if your votes in the primary elections are to be counted. In 2008, the Democrats’ leadership decided that Florida votes for the Democratic nominee for President would not count since the Florida Democrats had the audacity to move up their primary date in order to be relevant. If the political class can cut you out of the election process because of scheduling, you do not have a true voice in electing the country’s leaders. If the political class can decide if and when your vote counts, you are not free.
You cannot be free if the political class takes hard earned taxpayer money and constantly shovels it out towards businesses, unions, and lobbyists in exchange or reciprical donations to their re-election campaigns. The recent 2010 budget included over 11,000 earmarks, each representing the sale of freedom for donations. If business, union, and lobbyist interest override individual Americans’ desires, you are not free.
You cannot be free if, at the end of the primary season, party leaders can override the wishes of individual Americans who voted in the primaries and replace their choice for Presidential candidate. The Democratic party has super delegates at their Presidential conventions, special delegates that can override the wishes of all those who thought they had a voice in electing their leaders. If the results your voting depends on the ultimate and final approval of a small cadre or politburo of politicians, who can override your choice, you are not free.
You cannot be free if the government can seize your home and property under eminent domain and turn that property over to private interests for development. In the Supreme Court ruling in Kelo vs. New London, the local political class was allowed to seize homeowners’ property, for a supposedly fair market place, in order to have private developers remake the area, versus the traditional reasons for eminent domain (schools, roads, bridges). Homeowners had to move against their will, giving up their land and homes. Ironically, the private development project was a flop so that the local political class got nothing for its abuse of eminent domain. If the government can take your property in the name of private development/public good, you are not free.
You cannot be free if the government can access your phone records, Internet histories, library activity, etc. The Patriot Act was ramrodded through after 9-11 and encouraged the government security apparatuses to be more aggressive and freedom threatening in the name of homeland security. If the Patriot Act and its potential for abuse is in effect, you are not free.
You cannot be free if the government denies the concept of freedom to others outside of the United States. Whether it is torturing prisoners under its control, denying due process to those same prisoners, instituting trade embargoes against long ago enemies (e.g. Cuba), etc., egregious behavior directed against non-Americans makes it easier for the political class to eventually, and subtly, direct that same behavior against Americans. If lack of due process and torture can be potentially directed at you, you cannot be free.
You cannot be free if those in the political class hold you and the rest of America in contempt. When Americans used their freedom of speech guarantee and spoke up to argue against the current atrocity called health care reform, Speaker Of The House Nancy Pelosi called them un-American. At the opening of the new visitors center in D.C. a center paid for with American taxpayer money, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid declared that Americans visiting D.C. in the summer physically smelled. When incumbent Congress people accept campaign donations from companies, unions, and lobbyists that do not even do business in their state or Congressional district, they are more likely to reward those out of district and out of state donors than work for the good of their constituents. If your leaders do not respect you and view your interests with contempt, you are not free.

It gets depressing when you take a really hard look at where freedom and liberty stand in this country today. We have allowed the political class to slowly but steadily erode our freedom that is recognized only as we view the deterioration over time. This deterioration is what the fifty steps in “love My Country, Loathe My Government” attempts to redress. We need to act now before the political class makes a total sham out of “land of the free.”

American Freedom Essay Contest

September 17th is designated as Constitution Day because on that date in 1787, the delegates of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed the United States Constitution at Independence Hall. Each year, The Constitutional Walking Tour celebrates Constitution Day throughout the month of September, and teachers are encouraged to utilize The Constitutional’s many free educational resources available at: www.TheConstitutional.com/1787.

This year, in honor of Constitution Day, The Constitutional Walking Tour and The Philadelphia Inquirer asked students to give their views about American freedom. The American Freedom Essay Contest challenged educators to get their students to write a 100-300 word essay on the importance of freedom in their lives. Entries were judged in Elementary School, Middle School and High School categories with the winner in each category earning a free field trip of Historic Philadelphia with The Constitutional Walking Tour for his/her class. For more details on The Constitutional’s field trips, visit www.TheConstitutional.com/schools.

The contest is planned to be an annual event. To sign up to receive an email when the details of the 2008 contest is announced, visit www.TheConstitutional.com/schools and sign up for The Constitutional Walking Tour’s Educator mailing list.

Outraged American Whistleblower to Renounce His U.S. Citizenship

Christchurch, New Zealand (PRWEB) February 9, 2005

Harmon Wilfred, an American businessman and exiled whistleblower who has lived in Christchurch, New Zealand since August, 2001, says he will formally renounce his U.S. citizenship on March 1, 2005 to disassociate himself forever with the United States Government and its policies.

Harmon Wilfred says he has been considering the value of his U.S. birthright for many months and made a final decision to renounce his U.S. citizenship shortly after the inauguration of President George W. Bush for a second term of presidency. However, he says his decision which is permanent and irreversible, is far more than a political gesture.

“I was raised to believe – and believed fervently- that the United States is the land of the free and the home of the brave. But the actions of the United States Government in recent years, and my own personal experience, have undermined my respect for the U.S. to the extent that I no longer want to be an American.”

Wilfred plans to make a statement of renunciation before a U.S. consular officer in Auckland, New Zealand and will live as a “stateless individual” while he and his Canadian wife, Carolyn, are being considered for New Zealand residency.

Since arriving in New Zealand to invest in new technologies, Wilfred has been involved in the development of wireless data transmission, Broadband Powerline communication (BPL) and Internet telephony). He also oversees the development of humanitarian projects on behalf of his wife’s estate and is currently working with several charitable trusts to trial his newly proposed family/community support initiative in Christchurch, NZ.

Wilfred says he is confident his record of achievement in business and community support will make him and his wife strong candidates for New Zealand citizenship but plans to also offer himself to the world at large as an “honest and productive citizen”.

He believes the United States has reached a dangerous point in its history with what he calls an extravagant, self serving and dysfunctional government at the lead. “While over 2 billion people are starving around the world and 35.9 million Americans are living below the poverty line with 2 million literally homeless, we see $ 880 million US dollars spent on an election campaign and 60 million dollars expended on an inauguration ceremony for the winner; all the while American families are being ripped apart and impoverished in every U.S. State by a twisted family court system and the government would have us believe that this excessive and abusive way of life is sacrosanct.

“Americans are literally brain-washed by paid political spin doctors into believing that they live in a representative democracy when in actual fact today, the US system is nothing more than a politically corrupt form of special interest capitalism. Around the globe we’re seeing the US Government act unilaterally and in its own interests while in direct defiance of the legal authority of the United Nations, in the deluded belief that it is delivering freedom and democracy in places where it has no moral or legal mandate.”

“I can no longer be a party to this kind of lawlessness, dishonesty, waste and hypocrisy.” Wilfred’s hope is that the irrevocable renouncing of his U.S. citizenship on principle will become a wakeup call to all Americans.

‘A New Paradigm in Advocating for Religious Freedom’: A Little NGO Makes a Big Difference for Religious Freedom in Vietnam

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) May 5, 2007

“IGE is practicing a new paradigm in advocating for religious freedom. . . . Its work in Vietnam may be the most significant example of how the U.S. and global evangelicals can better expand religious freedom in repressive states.” (From “A New Day in Vietnam,” Christianity Today, May 2007.)

Less than three years ago, Vietnam was put on the U.S. State Department’s religious freedom blacklist for egregious violations of human rights. In the last six months, however, Vietnam led Southeast Asia in its first dialogue on religion and rule of law; was removed from the religious freedom blacklist; gained normalized trade relations with the U.S.; hosted President Bush and the APEC summit; and acceded to the WTO. Why the turnaround?

The Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) has been working quietly with government officials and faith communities in Vietnam for the past five years to promote sustainable religious freedom. As a result of this ongoing engagement, the State Department credited Vietnam with “significant progress” toward improving religious freedom, and Vietnam is becoming a regional leader on religious freedom dialogue through a conference series on “Religion and Rule of Law in Southeast Asia,” initiated and co-sponsored by IGE.

Because of IGE’s unique strategy and tangible successes, Christianity Today featured IGE in its May cover story. The article comes at a critical time. This week, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (an independent, bipartisan watchdog appointed by Congress) recommended that Vietnam be returned to the religious freedom blacklist for recent arrests of political dissidents, some of whom were religious leaders. Vietnam will require sustained insider advocacy to make further progress in its complex religious freedom issues under heightened global scrutiny.

IGE will continue its advocacy through fulfilling an agreement it signed in September 2006 with the Vietnam-USA Society to promote religious freedom in Vietnam together. The agreement includes: exchanges of analysis on religious discrimination reports; constructive dialogue between governmental and religious representatives; stimulating faith-based socioeconomic development; and holding annual regional conferences on religion and rule of law. Already, IGE is witnessing steps of progress toward the goals of this historic agreement, and its next conference will take place from 2-4 November 2007.

Teaching The US Constitution

The Constitution
by wallyg

Written over 200 years ago, the US Constitution is the most influnential legal document in existence. Seeing that it is essentiallly the backbone upon which our country is built, it is imperative to educate students on the meanings and principles behind the Constitution. After teaching US history for several years, finding new methods and information to bring to my lesson plans can be difficult.

Every year it seems as though I cover the same topics, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence.  But this year I wanted to try something new, to find a new angle to teach and educate my students on the documents which serve as our country’s foundation.  I struggled with finding material that would be new, fun, and yet educational until I came across Constitution Facts.com. After navigating around the website, I realized that I had dedicated little time to educating students about the men behind the Constitution.

From ConsitutionFacts.com I learned unique facts about the thirty-nine original signers of the United States Constitution.  For example, I did not know that both Alexander Hamilton (the first United States Secretary of the Treasury) and of New York and Richard D. Spaight were killed in a duel.  Or that of the Founding Fathers, George Washington was the only man who served as president without ever going to college.  These are just two examples of the wealth of information regarding the men surrounding the Constitution that can be found at ConstitutionFacts.com.  Now I have new informative information for next year’s lesson plan, and I can’t wait to use it!

Kristina teaches high school US History and loves traveling. She is fascinated by the cultures of the world and hopes one day to travel and share her experiences.

Religious Freedom at Stake

Nothing should scare this nation more than the fact that their religious freedom is at stake. Think it doesn’t matter; well religion whether you like it or not provides the only basis for human rights. Religion is the only reason for tolerance in this society.

Most people have it backwards; in most religions especially Christianity there is no tolerance for Sin, but plenty of mercy and tolerance for the sinner. Early reformers of this nation had a hard time separating the two which caused most of the backlash we have today. Early reformers also erred in trying to take a Republic of the United States and treat it as a theocracy. the error was this; church leaders have a responsibility to treat the church body like a theocracy since the chirch body makes up the body of Christ at least in Christian circles.

What happened was the opposite; church leaders became lax serving the dollar rather than God and becoming men pleasers instead of God pleasers. Politicians on the other hand created harsh laws in an attempt to repress sin and in so doing repressed sinners.

By introducing church law into human law lawmakers brought church issues into th epolitical realm. The result was many laws were created to protect sin. By contrast corrupt church leaders of all faiths have used laws to protect religion and the church as a shroud of secrecy and wickedness to defraud people, abuse and molest people, and in some cases kill people. This was the greater wickedness becasue by so doing it demanded that the human law must intercede into church law and again protections were lost for the church and gained for sin.

But, today we are at a grave crossroads where we must not only protect what we have but work dilignetly to regain what we have lost. The reform must start in our own home; then in our church; and then flow into our community and then our state and then our Country.

God please bless the U.S.A. once again with leaders that believe and trust in you.

Amen
