Is Jane Austen’s Emma In In The Constitution?

Endowed with wealth, brains, and good looks, Emma Woodhouse (twenty-years old) busies herself with other peoples’ lives as she -thinking herself worldly and clever- goes about scheming and conjuring up romantic liaisons. But it will turn out that she’s neither worldly nor clever, but naïve! And that in the end the only love match that really matters is her own.

Is Emma a beauty?

Dialogue supplies an immediate image of Emma. In reply to Mrs. Weston’s question: “She is loveliness itself.  Mr. Knightley, is not she?” Mr. Knightley responds:

“I have not a fault to find with her person,” he replied.  “I think her all you describe.  I love to look at her; and I will add this praise, that I do not think her personally vain.  Considering how handsome she is, she appears to be little occupied with it; her vanity lies another way.”

Are we reading a mystery novel?

From the very beginning we can see that neither beauty nor vanity seem to be the theme of the story but-meddling.

When Emma’s governess-companion marries and leaves the Woodhouse household, Emma finds herself on her own; that is without a female voice of wisdom. Soon, she befriends a 17-years old illegitimate girl named Harriet, taking upon herself the duties of a matchmaker.

Though Harriet is a sweet girl, she isn’t so well-read or bright. Emma has her own opinion of her:

She had always wanted to do everything, and had made more progress, both in drawing and music, than many might have done with so little labour as she would ever submit to.  She played and sang — and drew in almost every style; but steadiness had always been wanting.

Social hierarchies

Next, Emma prevents Harriet from marrying farmer Robert Martin, who though decent, Emma thinks he’s ‘beneath’ her. The novel depicts the British social system of hierarchies and inequalities, where titles of nobility and the landed gentry are the regents of the majority of the population.

Intrigues, conspiracies, and much cleverness fill Emma’s head as she cooks up schemes upon schemes to guide the docile Harriet. For this Emma proclaims her maxim: “I lay it down as a general rule, Harriet, that if a woman doubts as to whether she should accept a man or not, she certainly ought to refuse him. If she can hesitate as to “Yes,” she ought to say “No” directly.'”

Having formed an opinion of Emma, at this point, readers can see how misguided she is.

Emma’s father is a feeble old man given to whining and wishing everyone to see the world as he himself sees it. Although he’s a benign character, he proves incapable of giving sound counseling to his daughter. So father and daughter agree, “That is the case with us all, papa. One half of the world cannot understand the pleasures of the other.”

To all of Emma’s interventions, Mr. Knightley -a man of reason, common sense, and much nobility of heart- disapproves, and once in a while warns Emma of her meddling. When Emma goes beyond her childish trickery and insults the town’s spinster, Miss Bates, Mr. Knightley reprimands Emma, causing her to realize that she had turned into a selfish and careless brat. Much self-knowledge will come to Emma from this episode.

Who are Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill?

The mysterious characters Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax add much thickness to the plot, which in some parts reads like a detective novel. The interaction between Emma and Frank and Jane helps Emma grow up and find a spiritual center. From Frank Churchill Emma learns deception and from Jane Fairfax that there are worthy competitors in this world.

When Harriet tells her that she is in love with a man of a higher social standing and that he is being corresponded, Emma believes that man to be Mr. Knightley! Expecting to be told that Knightley will confirm his love for Harriet, she’s awakened fully to the pangs of love when he -instead- declares his love for her.

And all is well that ends well: Harriet marries Mr. Martin and Emma Mr. Knightley.

To each its own

Although I admire Jane Austen’s novels, I cannot help but to cringe at the British caste system that she describes. Titles of nobility, hierarchies, landed gentry, inequality, advantages over the common people, and so forth are all in my view detestable.

The founding fathers of the United States of America wrote in the Constitution: The constitution of the United States provides that no state shall “grant any title of nobility; and no person can become a citizen of the United States until he has renounced all titles of nobility.”

So, let’s keep it that way.

Q&A: Do you subscribe to the belief that freedom to make money individually or corporately and keep it trumps all?

Question by nasty s: Do you subscribe to the belief that freedom to make money individually or corporately and keep it trumps all?
ethics, morality, good citizenship, health, national security…humanity?
Surely no one disputes that making money is what makes things go around economically, but at one time we decided that we needed an army to defend the country, we needed policemen to patrol our neighborhoods, firemen to put out fires, an FDA to keep tainted foods from reaching our dinner table, etc… So clearly there are more considerations than just freedom to make money and keep as much of it as possible. So where do you draw the line between making money and just doing whats right?

Best answer:

Answer by gomanyes562
It’s a value judgment, and there is no way you can draw an arbitrary line. I believe that you must not hurt others when you make money. If it is a truly positive economic transaction, then both parties benefit. For example, if you sell safe food, you will make less money, but you will be making it honestly, and there would be no need for the FDA if everyone did that. But a few people try to game the system, resulting in regulations.

    “MANIFESTO FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM”

BY JEAN BRASEL,

President, Freedom of Religion For Everyone Everywhere (F.R.E.E.)

http://www.communicate-now.com/free

In these times of worldwide violence and intolerance, it is time that we the decent loving tolerant people of the world all take a stand for Peace and Unity and Religious Tolerance.

At the bottom of all conflicts, there is always some underlying force which fosters hatred and enmity – such people doing this for their own power needs and gains.

Those of us who are fed up with this kind of behavior need to let our voices be heard throughout the planet,to raise up in one strong voice to let ourselves blast out the hatred! We the decent peoples of earth do resolve to let it be known that we will no longer tolerate nor accept war and violence and intolerance!

To accomplish this, all religions in the world need to unite in a common bond – unified in our belief in tolerance for all. That it is no longer all right for one group to attack another “in the name of religion.” That it is no longer okay to kill innocent people, or invalidate or maim others for one’s own gains.Whether it is country against country, province against province, persons against persons, men against women, this will no longer be tolerated.

That we resolve to take a stand as the Year 2000 approaches to Proclaim the Year 2000 as the Year of Religious Freedom-Freedom for all to practice their religion and hold their beliefs in the manner that they wish to,without interference from dictators or evil minded people – to Worship Freely, and practice their religion as they see fit-without harming others. That individuals have the right to be in the religion of their choosing, and as well, resolve to respect the religious beliefs of others.

That we pledge to uphold the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

And to heed the words of humanitarian L.Ron Hubbard:

“On the day when we can fully trust each other, there will be peace on earth.”

And we can therefore help make this a better freer world – free of intolerance and war and strife, and as such deliver the world out of the arms of the hate mongers, and up into peace and tolerance.

Yours in Peace and Harmony,

Jean Brasel FL STATE CERTIFIED MEDIATOR

Contemporary Author’s New Book Release Conveys Stellar Message: Kick the World’s Ass by Being Yourself

Contemporary Author’s New Book Release Conveys Stellar Message: Kick the World’s Ass by Being Yourself

New contemporary book author, silviamick

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 31, 2009 –

Absolute Freedom. It’s not a novel, it’s not exactly poetry – I Am – Absolute Freedom is the life journal of silviamick. It’s a journey in modern culture through her analytical eyes; a quest for individual freedom; and an exploration of the ups and downs that accompany being yourself.

I Am – Absolute Freedom is more than just a life journal and personal story – silviamick offends, enlightens, infuriates, and encourages, unleashing a deeper level of thought within her readers. She throws political-correctness out the window with the rulebook as she offers her insightful thoughts on everything from love, sex, and marriage to drugs, violence, and structured religion.

Seasoned with classic quotes and song lyrics, including the words of James Joyce and Metallica, I Am is a book about being yourself. As silviamick examines the most valued aspects of modern culture and explores the fantasies that mold today’s society, she discovers answers to some of life’s most provocative questions. During her written journey, silviamick tests the limits of individualism and finds the ability to break free from stereotypical labels while urging her readers to do the same.

“For too many years, the image I had of myself was strictly connected to the opinions of the people who made up my daily life,” silviamick stated in a recent interview. Her message is bold but simple – “Be nobody’s puppet. Don’t be scared of your greatness. Don’t let your potential rot inside of you. Don’t stop on the surface of things. Search your own meaning. Don’t compromise. Kick the world’s ass!”

I Am – Absolute Freedom is a powerful read, though it’s “not for the faint of heart,” according to Apex reviewer Heather Slocumb. “Her writing is sharp, her logic is seasoned, and her acerbically witty approach renders each of her points unforgettable – even if they ultimately offend you…(It) is a well-written, enjoyable read, highly recommended for those seeking real answers to the lingering questions that have beset them for far too long.”

“This world needs a revolution,” said silviamick. “You and I are the chosen ones.” I Am – Absolute Freedom offers encouragement to break away from the expectations of modern culture and thrive on your own individualism. It’s an amazing life journal chronicling the challenges, victories, and powerfulness that come with being yourself. I Am – Absolute Freedom isn’t about changing the world; it’s actually doing it.

I Am – Absolute Freedom is the debut book release from silviamick – a thought-provoking contemporary author with strong views on modern culture. The 34-year-old writer currently resides in Rome, Italy and has plans for a second title in the future. I Am – Absolute Freedom is a life journal written to share the importance of individualism and being yourself from a straightforward, unapologetic point of view.

Understanding Shredder Security Levels

1. Level 2 – Strip Cut is the least secure method of shredding documents, and we can only really recommend it for general document shredding. Strip Cut shredding is exactly what it sounds like: documents are merely cut into long strips, meaning that if a criminal were persistent enough, he or she could easily piece the document back together so it was readable. The only documents that should be destroyed in this manner are those that have no information on them that could not possibly lead to any sort of financial or personal loss if they were to be read by someone with bad intentions. We don’t mind going on record stating that we are not big fans of strip cut shredding, considering that there are so many cross cut (or better) machines on the market that offer near the capacity of strip cut models, with none of the worry.

2. Level 3 – Cross Cut is the next step up, and it is a world of difference as far as security goes. Cross cut machines cut paper into short confetti-like rectangular shapes. Most cross cut shredders on the market today offer what is known as a Security Level of 3. This classification relates to what are known as the FACTA regulations, passed by congress in 2005. These laws state that businesses and individuals who regularly handle sensitive financial and personal information of either employees or customers must properly destroy these documents whenever they are being discarded. In other words, if you have a file of, say, social security numbers, you can’t just put it in the recycling bin, you must shred it in a machine that offers a Level 3 Security or above. If you don’t you may find yourself subject to pretty steep fines, as well as possible litigation if someone can prove that they were financially damaged due to documents that you mishandled. The safest, easiest way for you to protect yourself is to do your shredding with a Level 3 (or better) cross cut machine.

3. Levels 4-5 Cross Cut. Sometimes known as “diamond cut,” these shredders cut paper into particles that are similar to L3 cross cut, but are either smaller, or diamond-shaped (even more difficult to piece together) or both. These Security levels are what you might want to consider when you must regularly shred documents that contain information that is vital to the survival of your business, or is otherwise considered top secret. It important to note that as security levels rise, in most cases the sheet capacity of the machine will drop. While it is possible to find L3 shredders that have sheet capacities near that of L2 strip cut models, that is not often the case with L4 and L5 machines. You will have to decide what the balance is between the level productivity you want out of your machine, and the level of security you need on a regular basis.

4. Level 6 Micro Shred. Usually reserved for high-level, top-secret government work (such as the military and Homeland Security), these shredders virtually obliterate your average sheet of paper into thousands of tiny particles. To get a rating of L6, a shredder must meet guidelines set out by the National Security Administration, usually seen as “NSA/CSS Specification 02-01.” It’s probably overkill for the average business to seek out an L6 Security shredder, but they are available, albeit with some of the productivity caveats that go along with Levels 5 and 6.

What is the relationship of personal autonomy to citizenship rights?

Question by Joshua M: What is the relationship of personal autonomy to citizenship rights?
As the traditional “keeper of the family”, women have continued to confront challenges to claims of personal autonomy and reproductive freedom. I’m having some difficulty answering this question. This is my Women & Politics course. What is your opinion?

Best answer:

Answer by Oscar
You will not like my answer nor will your instructor.

It boils down to women wish to make decisions. Which ignores how their husbands or family feel. And abortion on demand.

I think it is working rather well. What is the divorce rate 50% or is it higher now?
