Q&A: Should a person be allowed to break the law in the name of freedom of religion?

Question by C.S.: Should a person be allowed to break the law in the name of freedom of religion?
For example, Native Americans are allowed to possess eagle feathers in violation of the Endangered Species Act.

This is a should question, not an ‘are’ question: so give me your ideal answers about whether freedom of religion should trump the law. (particularly when that law has no human victims).
On the Native American thing, they won a court ruling saying they could violate ESA. It wasn’t provided for in law, but was an exception made legally.

Yes, unless your religious beliefs entail violating the rights of others (i.e. keeping same-sex couples from getting married).

Is it Freedom of religion or freedom to dictate other religions and beliefs?

Question by Jeffrey B: Is it Freedom of religion or freedom to dictate other religions and beliefs?
We see this allot. I personally think it is out of hand now. If someone expresses their religion in or at a public place or if a memorial is set up and that shows a cross why are people taking offense to this? I was brought up that if you see something you do not like ignore, or avoid it and move on. I was told that was my right. Now you see people getting sued all the time because they do not want people to publicly practice their religion.

In these cases the specifics are very important —
The key is the consitutional structure of “religious freedom” which has two parts:
Government can not prevent people from practicing a religion or establish an official religion. So – to relate it to some real cases:
A school ball team has a prayer “in the huddle” — this feels like an imposition of religion from above (kids pressured into praying by a school official)
But on the other hand – if a single football player prays before the game – this is protected religious worship.
Or — memorials – a town builds a memorial with an overal religious symbol on it – the implication is that this is a message of an official town religion — Government establishing a religion — a no-no
Conversely – private businesses in the town putting up the same religious symbol on their property – that’s free practice and protected.

As an overal rule, imagine if the symbol was of a religion you are uncomfortible with — would you feel pressured?
So – for a last example – people may not notice anything wrong with a Christian motto on school jackets. So then – would the same folks be as comfortible if the school uniform included a Hijab?

Islam and Christianity in Jamaica Episodes 1 and 2 (Full HQ) Religious Hardtalk

FULL VERSION WITH THE SECOND EPISODE ! Three former Jamaican Fundamentalist Christians tell their stories about how they entered Islam and how it has changed their lives. The Enslaved Muslims from West Africa Recent scholarship on the Atlantic slave trade has revealed that the total number of Enslaved Africans brought to the Americas is likely to be more than twenty million. Slyviane A. Diouf, writing on the Muslim slaves in the Americas, conclusively asserts: “Therefore, if counted as a whole, on a religious basis rather on an ethnic one the Muslims were probably more numerous in the Americas than any other group among the arriving Africans”. In Jamaica from 1655 to 1807, Philip Curtin in his work on slave census, proposes 423900 Africans from Muslim dominated areas, representing 56.8 percent of the arrivals. Islam had cut across ethnic lines, social classes and state boundaries in West Africa— Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Mali, Benin, Ghana, and Nigeria, Libya Egypt (incorporating Madinka, Fula, Susu, Ashanti, Hausa and other nations) from as early as the tenth and eleventh centuries, ie long before the slave trade. Islam in these kingdoms was first diffused by the migration of Muslim merchants, teachers, and agricultural settlers. The Muslims sometimes formed peaceful minorities in non-Muslim societies such as the Ashanti Empire. In cases such as Kano, Katsina, Takrur and Bornu the local chiefs accepted Islam as early as the tenth and eleventh centuries.

‘Atheist’ Nations Are More Peaceful

Science & Reason on Facebook: tinyurl.com “Peace Is Non-Theistic” by www.youtube.com “Vision of Humanity groups together a number of interrelated initiatives focused on global peace. It brings a strategic approach to raising the worlds attention and awareness around the importance of peacefulness to humanitys survival in the 21st century.” • www.visionofhumanity.org — Subscribe to Science & Reason • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com — I hear time and time again the incredible statements being made by the religiously minded whom make comparisons between themselves, other religious groups and also even to the non-religious. I hear often Muslims claiming their religion to be one of peace, of knowledge of wisdom and of respect (laughs), and much of the same spewed from the pipes of the Christian, Jewish and Hindu drones. Though, its interesting to note that I have yet to see any statistical data nor any evidence to support such claims; mainly due to the fact that there is none. With this video, I seek to present factual statistical data that expresses that such claims are not only false, but like most religious speech, are blatant falsities that exist as a propaganda force. Religion now like always maintains a clear and distinct correlation with conflict, not peace! The Vision of Humanity Global Peace Index survey accounts for internal and external conflicts and the subsequent losses incurred, Including that of potential terrorist acts

Scientology Opens Record Number of New Churches Around the World in 2010

On April 24th, the new Ideal Org of Los Angeles opened its doors

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 28, 2011

In 2010, major Churches of Scientology opened across Europe, North America and Africa.

These new Churches are the realization of Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard’s vision, where he prescribed the standard and model for all Churches of Scientology to aspire to in becoming what he called an Ideal Organization (Org). Ideal Orgs are built to provide all services of the Scientology religion while also serving as a home for the community at large for the cooperative advancement of the underprivileged and forsaken of every ethnic and denomination. Ideal Orgs are made possible by the contributions of Scientology parishioners dedicated to uplifting their communities and helping their fellow man.

New Church Grand Openings are attended by thousands of parishioners, guests and dignitaries from across the social spectrum.

The first new Ideal Org opened in 2010 was the Brussels branch of the Churches of Scientology for Europe, on the 23rd of January. Thousands of guests were on hand from across Europe to cut the ribbon on an 88,000-square-foot historic structure along Boulevard de Waterloo. Among the distinguished guests was the Honorable Hugo Coveliers, Senator in the Belgian Parliament, who addressed those gathered: “This new Church in the capital city of Europe stands as a beautiful testament to your help, and you can be certain of my continued support. You care for people, and this Church is such an example of this attitude.” Since opening, dignitaries from across the European community have visited the Church and toured its massive Public Information Center, comprising hundreds of multimedia presentations illustrating Scientology beliefs (19), the life and legacy of Founder L. Ron Hubbard, and the full array of Church-sponsored social betterment and community outreach programs. (Watch the video: Churches of Scientology for Europe Grand Opening.)

One week later, on the 30th of January, Scientologists and their guests assembled in Quebec, at the heart of the Nouvo Saint-Roch district to open a new Ideal Org for that city. Many dignitaries participated in the dedication, including the Honorable Pamela Appelt, from the International Center for Human Rights and Democratic Development, who declared: “It has been my privilege to work alongside the Church of Scientology for 25 years. Whatever the issue, you have answers that are useful to anyone in public service.” (Watch the video: Church of Scientology of Quebec Grand Opening.)

The following week, on the 6th of February, came the Grand Opening of the new Church of Scientology and Celebrity Centre of Las Vegas. Thousands of Scientologists and community leaders gathered to dedicate the new Ideal Org designed to serve those who work in the entertainment capital of the world. Those taking the podium for the ceremony included United States Congresswoman Shelley Berkley and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, who stated: “As the Mayor of the fastest-growing city, I look forward to partnering with you, as the fastest-growing religion.” (Watch the video: Church of Scientology and Celebrity Centre of Las Vegas Grand Opening.)

On the 26th of March, a new Scientology Life Improvement Centre opened in Johannesburg, South Africa, directly adjacent to the nation’s university. Joining Scientologists for the dedication ceremony were university students, community leaders and government officials. The welcoming address was delivered by Ms. Phumzile Zuma, daughter of the nation’s president. (Watch the video: Johannesburg Scientology Life Improvement Centre Grand Opening.)

On April 24th, the new Ideal Org of Los Angeles opened its doors. More than 6,000 parishioners and guests celebrated the opening of this Church which stands at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and L. Ron Hubbard Way. Formally welcoming the Church were a host of local and state officials, including State Assembly Member Karen Bass and Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, who spoke to the Church’s social betterment programs in his address: “Your drug education means everything to the safety of our schools and neighborhoods. That is why we trained a corps of our own deputies in the use of your unbeatable program. So I want to thank each and every one of you for everything you do in helping me do my job.” (Watch the video:Church of Scientology of Los Angeles Grand Opening.)

On the 10th of July, the National Scientology Organization opened in Mexico City. More than 7,000 Scientologists and guests attended the dedication of this first Scientology Ideal Org in Latin America, in a fully restored cultural landmark that stands near Mexico’s National Fine Arts Palace and the Supreme Court. Here, too, officials took the opportunity to recognize the Church and its social betterment programs. Ms. Laura Chapa from the Federal Ministry of Education addressed the gathering by stating: “I believe that with the opening of this new Organization, leaders of all sectors of society will have the same realization I had: that you have the solution. And so I also believe that what will come from this new Organization is a turning point for our nation.” (Watch the video: National Scientology Organization for Mexico Grand Opening.)

On the 17th of July, an assemblage of 4,200 parishioners and guests filled the streets to inaugurate the new Church of Scientology of Pasadena. The heritage of the 58,000-square-foot historic Victorian landmark is preserved in the fully restored structure, including the classic four-story atrium galleria, and the interior Chapel featuring Tiffany-inspired stained glass windows as a backdrop for Scientology religious services and community gatherings. Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard was among the notable guests who participated in the dedication ceremonies: “With this beautifully restored structure in Old Pasadena, the Church of Scientology represents not only a growing religion, but an important factor in the future of this city.” (Watch the video: Church of Scientology of Pasadena Grand Opening.)

On the 24th of July, parishioners and their guests congregated just blocks from the Seattle Center and Space Needle for the opening of the new Church of Scientology of Washington State. Among those welcoming the new Church was State Supreme Court Justice Richard Sanders, with whom the Church has partnered in the field of human rights for 35 years: “There is nothing more important in life than being true to yourself and standing up for what you believe. That is freedom, and that is what makes life worth living. And that, to me, is what you represent.” (Watch the video: Church of Scientology of Washington State Grand Opening.)

Are we turning more so and more so into an authoritarian government who does not allow freedom of religion?

Question by no vanilla for me: Are we turning more so and more so into an authoritarian government who does not allow freedom of religion?
Or I should say, free expression of religion…What would make a teacher any more so influential than the president of the United State? Yet we allow the president to express his or her religious beliefs. And why shouldn’t we? Why shouldn’t all be allowed to pratice freedom of religion, why should we put restrictions on teachers?

Doesn’t sound too much like religious freedom to me, but that is what they call it.

RESTORATION OF THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE: A RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT IN AMERICAN PRIDE
Freedom of Religion
As a nation of individuals, it is difficult to create a national identity that will reflect our seperate standards and hopes, but it is possible if our focus is on the freedom of the individual to pursue those dreams with only a limited amount of rules and regulations. If as individuals we will understand that America is a country rich in diversity and imagination, we respect these individual differences rather than attempt to regulate or restrain them, we will develop a national unity rich in harmony, each individual unencumbered by a web or net of rules and regulations that will restrict our ideas and deafen our dreams. To summarize, a return to the days when common sense was the rule rather than ideologies that divide; a return to a time when minding one’s own business would determine our destiny in what we accomplished and where we lived–a day when we could keep as many cattle and horses that we could afford to care and tend for responsibly, a time when we could build the palace of our dreams or choose to live in a cabin on Walden Pond without prejudice.
