The Joint Forces Headquarters brings together staff from North Carolina’s departments of Transportation, Highway Patrol, National Guard and Emergency Management under one roof for coordinated routine and emergency operations. Specifically, at the facility’s new Statewide Transportation Operations Center (STOC), the North Carolina Department of Transportation is co-located with the Turnpike Authority and NC DOT’s Incident Management Assistance Patrol. The new 236,000 square feet building features state-of-the-art technology, equipment and network infrastructure, and facilities such as a 400-seat auditorium, a dedicated media briefing room, a large situation room and multiple breakout and conference rooms.

Activu’s secure, Internet Protocol (IP) and open standards based visualization and collaboration solution is as an integral part of the state’s Triangle Expressway Intelligent Transportation (ITS) system and allows the NCDOT to easily share information from 400 closed circuit television cameras, over 600 vehicle detectors and 5 roadway weather information systems with other agencies at the JFHQ and beyond. This sharing, where all stakeholders see exactly the same information, improves situational awareness, helps develop a common operating picture and significantly improves the quality and speed of decision-making which, in turn, helps the DOT fulfill its mission of safely and efficiently moving people, goods and services. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy forces gay men to serve their country in secret. If this secret is discovered, they are kicked out of the military. But having a secret is a bad thing because a foreign spy can easily blackmail such a person. On the other hand, if gay men served openly, no one could blackmail them. So DADT is hurting our national security. Do you agree?

Hosting a member of the Royal Family is a responsibility in itself, but for the managers and staff of The Lodge at Chaa Creek one of the most important tasks was keeping Prince Harry’s visit under wraps until the royal entourage departed, Chaa Creek owner Lucy Fleming said today.

“Although our staff is the most professional in Belize and accustomed to serving celebrities and dignitaries, the royal family is held in very high esteem in Belize. Everyone was excited to hear that Prince Harry would be staying at Chaa Creek, and with 135 employees, we had to impress on everyone that privacy was paramount,” Ms Fleming said.

“I’m very pleased to say that the secret was well kept, and that the Prince enjoyed a relaxing time away from paparazzi and publicity,” she added.

Prince Harry was visiting Belize as part of his grandmother’s, Queen Elizabeth II diamond jubilee, celebrating 60 years of occupying the throne and as Belize’s Head of State.

During the Prince’s visit he explored the ancient Maya temple of Xunantunich, attended a massive citywide block party held in his honour at Belmopan, the nation’s capital, where he also conducted the naming service for Queen Elizabeth II Boulevard.

Ms Fleming said she and her husband Mick were pleased that Prince Harry’s entourage chose The Lodge at Chaa Creek during the Belize tour.

“It was certainly good news to hear that, out of all the places to stay in Belize – and we do boast some excellent resorts and hotels now – The Prince chose Chaa Creek. It really reflects well on our staff and shows that we’re doing something right,” she said.

While at Chaa Creek the Prince visited the Butterfly Farm, enjoyed traditional Maya food with a gourmet twist, and relaxed with an hour-and-a-half massage.

“Of course with a guest such as Prince Harry, security is a major concern, but we value all of our guest’s privacy and wellbeing, so the security procedures we already have in place were sufficient, with of course a few modifications.

“However, Prince Harry’s grandmother is Belize’s head of state and the people have very strong affection for the Queen and Royal Family, so we did have to contain the staff’s excitement and caution them to respect the Prince’s privacy and right to relax by not telling their friends about the visit until he left. I think we all enjoyed being in on a big secret,” Ms Fleming said.

Prince Harry said he found Chaa Creek to be very relaxing, complimented the restaurant and kitchen after dinner and thanked the staff when he left, Ms Fleming said.

Common Sense Ways to Stay Safe this Spring Break

Did you know that college aged students are at the highest risk for being sexually assaulted? With spring break just around the corner, RAINN, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, released helpful safety tips for spring break.

Whether you are headed to the beach or overseas or devoting your spring break to community service, it’s important to keep your safety top of mind. In addition to common sense travel tips like wearing sunscreen and keeping your passport safe, there are some things you can do to reduce the risk and prevent you or a friend from being the victim of sexual assault.

1. Trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe in any situation, go with your gut. If you feel uncomfortable or something doesn’t feel right, leave and get to a safe place immediately. If someone is pressuring you, it’s better to lie and make up a reason to leave than to stay and be uncomfortable, scared, or worse.

2. Protect your location on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare etc. Think twice before sharing every detail of your spring break on Facebook and Twitter. Despite security settings, posting information about your whereabouts or activities can still reveal details that are accessible to the public. Use your best judgment when “checking-in” on Facebook or Foursquare and be cautious of revealing personal information through status updates or tweets with Twitter trends like #SpringBreak and #SB2012.

3. Get Local. Know your accommodation address and the safest routes to and from your local destinations. Have the number for local cab companies on hand and always keep enough cash on you to take a taxi home. Know who to contact in the event of an emergency, such as 911 or local authorities. If traveling internationally, have the contact information for the U.S. Embassy with you.

4. Be a good friend and stick together. Arrive together, check in with one another throughout the night, and leave together. Think twice about going off alone; if you have to separate from your friends, let them know where you are going and who you are with. If something seems questionable or someone is acting aggressively, don’t be afraid to intervene. By speaking up, you may help prevent your friend from being the victim (or perpetrator) of a crime.

5. Don’t let your guard down. A spring break destination can create a false sense of security among vacationers. Don’t assume that fellow spring breakers will look out for your best interests; remember they are essentially strangers.

6. Use your cell phone as a tool. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, shoot a quick text for a “friend-assist.” Make a back-up plan before you go out just in case your phone dies. If you are traveling internationally, buy a pay-as-you-go phone or contact your cell phone provider to activate international coverage during your trip.

7. Drink responsibly and know your limits. Always watch your drink being prepared, and, when possible, buy drinks in bottles. If you lose sight of your drink or believe it might have been tampered with, throw it out and get a new one. If you or a friend seem too intoxicated for the amount of alcohol consumed or you suspect that someone has been drugged, get to a hospital.

In the event of a sexual assault during spring break, seek immediate medical attention. In the U.S., call 911 for emergency help or the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE) for advice and support. If you are traveling internationally contact the State Department or the American Embassy in country, to be connected with special services for American victims of crime abroad. You can also register your international trip with the U.S. State Department, to be notified of safety status changes.

Regardless of when the sexual assault occurred, it’s never too late to get help. If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual violence, talk to someone who understands what you’re going through.
