Q&A: Is monogamous restriction impeding the freedom of religion?

Question by jmax: Is monogamous restriction impeding the freedom of religion?
The Mormons had “plural” marriages when starting out, however, the main stream church then rescinded this aspect when pressured by the U.S. government. Now, some are arguing that a monogamous restriction is impeding their freedom of religion What do you think?

As an Ex-Mormon, I have to tell you that the polygamy that the church practised was abusive.

Girls as young as twelve were taken from their families and forced to marry men many times older than them. Women who were already happily married were taken by the Prophet Joseph Smith from their loving husbands and told that if they did not marry the prophet, they would go to hell.

Mormon polygamy involved blackmail, paedophilia and abuse. That does not need to return.

  • Freedom of religion isn’t what you think it is.

The US Supreme Court upheld the right to ban polygamy among Mormons back in 1890 in Reynolds vs US.

Religion is no excuse for breaking any law. Period.

And the Mormons would fight hard against the return of polygamy. Most of their female members would quit before accepting that hell again.
