Shelley Argent launches “I Expect Better” – with a message to Julia Gillard

HOW TO GET INVOLVED (click on ‘show more’ for instructions): This video shows Shelley Argent launching a new campaign called “I Expect Better” aimed at the world’s leaders and designed to encourage everyone to take action and show their support for Marriage Equality. Please join in this campaign by uploading your own personal video to YouTube. Instructions for uploading and how to label the video are below. 1. Keep videos short and sharp. Try for less than 2 minutes if you can. 2. YouTube/Google Account. In order to upload your video, you must have a valid YouTube account. 3. Clear sound is crucial. Join or Make a Charitable Donation to Support the Centre for Inquiry’s efforts! www.cficanada.ca/support. More secret footage and explosive documentation to be released soon. Members of Think Again! TV and the Centre for Inquiry, via a secret source, obtained invitation-only tickets to a live faith healing/supernatural debt relief event featuring Peter Popoff at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on May 26, 2011. Footage shows Popoff engaging in “healings”, hosting testimonials and requesting large sums of money from the audience. Also features a sick man being turned away, and the description of an altercation in which – rather ironically – the organist for this “faith healer” wished upon us death by cancer. Background: Peter Popoff was a famous 1980s faith healer proven a fraud by skeptic James Randi on the tonight show with Johnny Carson. Randi and his assistants used a radio scanner to intercept transmissions from Popoff’s wife Elizabeth giving the prophet information about members of the audience, including their address and ailments. After being exposed, his popularity declined sharply, and Popoff declared bankruptcy in 1987. 20 years later, Popoff returned, ironically now combining supernatural debt relief, of all things, with his old faith healing tricks. He has become a profitable prophet once again.

  • @ExplorationB It’s one thing to live the lifestyle that they choose. I’m not going to be the one to throw any stones because no one can claim to be perfect. I believe that tolerance, compassion and proper counselling is the only appropriate response. Too expect equal rights, legitimacy and an acknowledged voice though is something else completely. No way! and the government will continue to hear that message from the people of Australia.

  • @MrDeutsch00 How can anyone equate “closed minded” with keeping marriage in line with it’s traditonal, age old blueprint of being the exclusive union between a man and a woman. It is part of natural law. Check the dictionary if you care to learn the meaning of the word ‘marriage’. What is closed minded is how you people keep trying to hack and then hijack the meaning of words to mean something they don’t to suit your own selfish un natural desires.

  • Shelley, get your facts right please. Women in the western world have never been considered a man’s property through marriage. To compare other societies is very misleading. Marriage by definition is a legal union between a man and a woman not between homosexuals. As for Julia Gillard, she already has major respect issues and would make her own situation far worse by supporting your cause.

  • I love what you do for australia shelly. my whole family accepts me for being gay, and they just cant understand how the rest of australia doesnt support me getting married. They want to see me get married one day and be happy, not live my life feeling like an outcast,

  • I really admire this videos message.
I uploaded a “I expect better” video as my first youtube video. If you have time please check it out. I bumble a bit but I think my message gets across… I hope ;-P

@bloobec calling it one community is like categorizing every racial minority into one ground, or every religious minority into one group. i find it wrong that people classify every sexual minority into one class. dont force people to identify with another identity if they dont want to. just like asians may not like black people, or buddhist may not like hindus, gays might not like transexuals. we are all very different, and need different treatments and rights, it isnt just one fight.

@bloobec sorry, i use dude generically. the LGBT community consists more than lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transexuals, and no matter how many letters you add to the acronym, it will never include everyone. all the people in our community have different needs and rights to be accomplished, and “gays and lesbians” are the ones who need same-sex marriage the most. she left much more people out than bisexuals and transsexuals using that term. to call it one community is a big thing.

  • @totallysickawesome I’m not a dude, thanks heaps for misgendering me. How about the LBGITQQ community stand together and fight together for something and stop finding fractures or differences to pick at. Why not make a concerted stand to work for marriage for all – including those bisexuals and trans* people who want to marry someone of the same gender?

@bloobec haha dude calm down, im bisexual as well. but same-sex marriage is mainly a gay and lesbian issue, rather than a bisexual and trans issue. some trans people and some bisexuals can get married, so its only an issue for some of these people, gays and lesbians cant at all, its an issue for all of them. and gender identity has nothing to do with marriage. transsexuals can be gay, straight or bi, saying its an issue for transsexuals is like saying its an issue for black people.

  • @totallysickawesome Seriously? You really think that part rights are even half-way? You’re suggesting that bisexual individuals can marry when they’re in opposite-sex relationships and that makes them ok and better off than gays and lesbians? Thanks for continuing the invisibility of the bisexual and trans* communities in equal marriage campaigns, clearly you don’t want our support. Oh, and trans* tend to have it worse than everyone by the by

@bloobec bisexuals and trans have part rights, gays and lesbians have no rights, marriage wise anyway. it is more of an important issue for them.

  • brilliant she is an inspirational advocate and leader for ‘our community’ as said above ‘Shape it or someone else will’ rally to her eloquent, yet powerful message…Be part of the community, get on the bus, or watch it drive by…what do you choose?

As a gay FTM from America, thank you! I am tired of being forced to remain silent as a devout man who simply happens to be gay and FtM as well. I want to have the right to marry at least on the civil level, since my religious elders will likely never change their stance on it (I am Catholic) no matter how much it damages the very people they are meant to help. Shame!

  • Tony Abbott = AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST JOKE
    *PENALTY RATES “optional”
*Wants 1 Billion CUT from PBS – medicines for cancer, transplant & other patients
    *11 Billion Costing Cover Up
*30 Billion BLACKHOLE in his BOGUS Climate policy that no scientist/economist support
*Against Flood Levy & wants a Childcare Levy
*Wild Rivers for Mining giants to mine on Aboriginal soil.
*Millions in donations from Tobbacco Industry then against PP
*Against the Mining tax & raking in millions from the Mining Industry

  • Shelley i feel like ur the mum of the entire gay community as well as your sons, thank you darling, truly love your message xx

  • wonderful campaign.

  • @bloobec When I make my video I will also campaign for trans and bi equality too. I understand your frustration as I have friends who are Trans and Bi too and I understand that they feel silenced.

  • @ExplorationB “Lesbian” and “Gay” are not umbrella terms. They’re specific terms. “Queer” or “LBGTIQ” are umbrella terms. I am very happy with this campaign, I just want to ensure full inclusion.

  • @bloobec I know it’s not fair to use umbrella terms but I promise I do my best to ensure full visibility

  • “Lesbians and Gays”… but what about the bisexuals and trans* people who want to marry those of the same sex? Why are we always invisible?

  • Woah Shelley!!! how admirable of you, really, it’s inspiring. And it’s hard to believe that as the first female prime minister of Australia she could be so close-minded and judgemental.

  • OMG I love you Shelley! Thank you for speaking out xo

  • Thank you for this! If we can help mothers see that this is about loving their children, and like good parents, wanting them to be afforded the rights and opportunities they deserve, we can really make a change. I showed my mom your video- she is a ways off, but the love is there, and love is a transformer and healer. Thank you. xo~

  • Brilliant video, and I love your campaign idea. I think the It Gets Better campaign was a good start, but we definitely needed something more. I hope Julia Gillard listens and starts acting rationally.

  • you know you dont have to be atheist to hat peter popoff

Worked for Peter & his wife Elizabeth soon after they went BK back in the 80’s. He had just bought another mansion via one of his cronies. It was an absolutely horrible experience-evil manifested. Morally bankrupt w/ no socially redeeming values.

  • Next? Peter Popoff-brand Holy Snake Oil. From snakes indigenous to the Holy Land. Real snakes bred from the staff of Moses! Cures all! Removes debt! Only a $5000 ‘seed of love’ to Popoff Ministries. Cheap!

  • This guy is on TV all the time and I stop at the channel and cannot believe people actually believe this shit. It’s just such nonsense.

  • im gonna call PETER POPOFF AND ORDER HIS LIL HEALING THING. IF HE ASKS ME FOR MONEY IM GONNA SEND A MONEY ORDER AND CANCEL IT. HAHA, FUCKEN RIP-OFF!

  • He got his 2 daughters back because they sent all their money to POPOFF and can no longer afford their own homes…..They have to move back in with daddy.

  • That black guy at 8:08 knows exactly what’s going on here.

  • 1 bad vote… i guess peepee saw the video

  • cunt

  • Fat stupid brain dead zombie bastard. Abraham Lincoln freed the fducking slaves for this?

  • Peter Popoff – what a complete douchebag. How desperate (stupid) do you have to be to believe this anything dickwad says.

  • I didn’t see any video of Popoff asking for $1000, as the video makers claim.
I’m glad they’re exposing this a-hole anyway, and really glad they showed up at the meeting offering those fact sheets on Popoff. Conscientious Canadians, if only more of us Americans could be so!

  • Wait- at 5:03, is that “Cheezus” I hear?

How could you scam people like this without feeling the slightest bit of remorse?

Popoff and his crew aren’t just criminals, they’re monsters.

  • 1 dislike. (I wonder who that could have been.)

  • whar scares me more than this guy is the people who follow him. one deluded crazy is understandable — mass delusion is more frightening.
