which right do you think takes priority, freedom of speech or freedom of religion?

Question by : which right do you think takes priority, freedom of speech or freedom of religion?
I feel They are both equally important. Can you really have one without the other? If we take away peoples protection to worship. For example many states have tried to not recognize wicca as a religion thereby denying its followers the same protections under the law. therefore they can’t openly express how they developed there more code.in that case they don’t have freedom of religion or free speech. And other people are using religion to tell people they can’t act or speak in a way that goes against there religion. In effect using religion to justify censorship. What are your thoughts?

  • Freedom of speech precedes freedom of religion.

    Freedom of Speech.
Without freedom of speech there won’t be freedom of religion!

  • “many states have tried to not recognize wicca as a religion”

You don’t mean US states do you? States don’t officially recognize religions, to my knowledge.

  • They are both constitutional guarantees but apparently terrorists have hi jacked our constitution too. And our president who took an oath to “defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic” is now derelict in his duties and this dereliction amounts to an act of treason as he has sided with the enemy.

  • Freedom of religion is nonsense, would any government allow the sacrifice if children to Molech?

  • Oh great now even our freedoms have to yield right-of -way!!

  • I agree, they are both important.

Although freedom of religion is considered a basic right in the United States, it is perhaps the freedom that is most hotly disputed. The freedom of religion, which has been defined as “the right to believe in and to practice the faith of one’s choice.” According to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNUDHR), “everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.” This includes a person’s right “to change his religion or belief,” along with the freedom “to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.”—Article 18.

The right to freedom of speech is recognized as a human under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

So it would seem that the UNUDHR has put freedom of religion before freedom of speech.

    Good question.

    Cite an example.

The US government ( and state governments within the US) has never had a list of “recognized” religions. The very act of creating such a list is unconstitutional.

Wiccans can express their religious opinions exactly as much as everyone else. Period.

However, that also means other people are allowed to say mean things about Wicca. Freedom of speech goes both ways. Just because someone doesn’t like me doesn’t mean I don’t have a right to express my religion.

Rights do not have priorities. That is the point of them being “rights.”
