Why do liberals think that American freedom of religion applies to religions other than Christianity?

Question by : Why do liberals think that American freedom of religion applies to religions other than Christianity?
When the first Amendment said congress could not establish a religion it meant it couldn’t establish a specific kind of Christianity.

Why are “educated” liberals too stupid to realize that this is one time we ignore both the actual words of the Constitution and the “original intent” since niether actually agree with what typical conservatives agree with?

  • Thomas Jefferson and the Supreme Court disagree with you. They were pretty smart guys when it came to the Constitution, so I think I would tend to take their interpretation over yours.

  • I like how people who know nothing about the Constitution think they’re experts.

Dude, it says “religion.” It doesn’t say “Christianity.” When there is no ambiguity in the text, these kind of interpretive gymnastics are not necessary.

  • Your question makes no sense. But, I think it is clear that liberals think that American freedom of religion only applies to their argument at the given time.

  • Where does it specify Christianity? If that was the intent, why doesn’t it say so?

  • Even Christians have limits on religious freedom. Why should others be exempt?

  • It applies to any other religion EXCEPT Christianity.

  • “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Where in there does it say Congress cannot establish a religion? It simply says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”

Basically, that just says “Congress can’t make a law that either favors or represses a religion.”

  • There is no such restrictions, and i very much doubt that such would have been imposed since one of the main authors of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, Benjamin Franklin, wasn’t a Christian, he was a Deist.

Well, I’d think that it applied to religions other than Christianity, because of the phrase ‘freedom of religion’. It’s kind of simple, isn’t it? Okay, well maybe you’re just too dumb too understand what this phrase means. Freedom of religion is the right to believe and practice any religion of your choice – it may not be recognised, but you have the right to practice it. The US was not born a Christian nation by constitutional word, deal with it, and quit the intolerance.
