Why not gay marriage if freedom of religion?

Question by Lauren M: Why not gay marriage if freedom of religion?
Why do people think gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed because it’s not a marriage God would sanction? If there are sects of Christianity (and there are) who think gay marriage is acceptable in the eyes of God, and we live in a country with freedom of religion, why don’t we HAVE to allow gay marriages to respect their religions? Why should a religion that says it’s wrong be given more creedence than one that says it’s not wrong?

  • Honestly, I’m not sure.

  • I’ll throw in my 2 cents. Ready???

First, let me comment on the “sects” question. Just because there is a sect or group that decides to teach something different than what the Bible teaches does not make it right or even acceptable. For example, the Bible clearly states not to have idols or images used in any area of worship to God, but the Catholic church uses icons, idols and images in almost every facet of their religion. The Bible also stated that in the future, there would be a time when “churches” would apostatize their beliefs and “forbid marriage” for some. (Read 1 Timothy 4:1-3) That prophesy came true, again with Catholics, by forbidding their priests and leaders to marry, and look at the disastrous effects that’s had with so much child molestation.

Also, to answer Mack C’s comments, there are MANY, MANY churches and sects of churches that accept homosexuals and homosexuality in their churches! I can’t believe you stated that AND the fact that you put the little cursing symbols in there to emphasize it. New Hampshire’s Episcopal Bishop, Gene Robinson (male) just stated, “I always wanted to be a June bride”, since he and his gay male partner of over 20 years are getting married in June, 2008. (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/faith/article3833364.ece). Also, who do you think marries or performs civil unions for all those gay couples in CA and Mass??

With that said, the Bible is not wishy-washy in any way about homosexual relations. It clearly forbids it in the Old Testament, which was written for the Jews AND in the New Testament, which was written for Christians. Therefore, if a church or sect of a church decides for THEM it’s OK, that does not mean God has changed his mind and all of a sudden accepts it.

First, for me to even write that, you have to assume that a “Christian” church even BELIEVES in the WHOLE Bible as the actual word of God (as I do). If not, there really is no argument. The Bible would then just be an interesting story book and yes, those churches that don’t believe in the Bible as the word of God can believe and teach whatever they want about gay marriage. In my opinion, why even form a Christian church if you’re not going to believe in the Bible?? It’s really just a social club at that point.

Now here’s where many Christians get VERY hypocritical. Many Christians will harp on homosexuality being wrong and so horrible and that gays/lesbians are not acceptable to God. As a Christian, I do believe that homosexuality is COMPLETELY wrong because the Bible clearly states that people who are in those types of relationships or have gay sex are NOT acceptable to God. However, some of the scriptures that state homosexuality is wrong also list many OTHER things that are equally wrong that many so-called Christians do not find as offensive.

For example, 1 Corinthians 6: 9 and 10 states: “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators (people who have sex OUTSIDE of marriage), nor idolaters (people who worship or use idols in their worship..ie, Catholics), nor adulterers (having sex with someone who is married and not your spouse), nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.”

So, a heterosexual “Christian” who is cheating on his/her spouse, a common thief, an alcoholic, etc is considered in the same boat as someone who practices homosexuality. Do the churches that fight against same-sex marriage and protest homosexuals care as much about those other wrongdoings? I would say not. When it’s all said and done, however, God views those practices all as equally bad.

That same scripture continues in verse 11: “However, that is what some of you were (Paul was writing to the church in the city of Corinth); but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.”

So, it says that even if you were doing these bad things (yes, even having homosexual relations 2000 years ago), you could stop, change and repent. So, if a person takes the Bible literally, this would also disprove being “born gay”, since God, the creator of humans, says someone could have practiced those sins in their past and THEN change. Of course, gays will fight that, because if the Bible is right, then continuing that lifestyle is sinning each and every day. No belief that it is wrong? No conscience to bother you!

Think of this, if God specifically had written in the Bible that a homosexual could, “not inherit the kingdom of God”, being born gay would mean that person was born with NO chance of salvation. They would have been born condemned with no chance to be acceptable to God. That doesn’t sound fair or even reasonable. I believe all humans are born SEXUAL and have a natural and God-given desire for sex (God told Adam and Eve to be “fruitful and fill the earth.. they had to have sex to do that.. and just read the book of Solomon.. it’s full of sexual talk.. “let her breasts intoxicate you daily”).

Was a person who wants to have sex with children born that way? Was a person who has sex with animals born that way? Was a necrophiliac born to have sex with the dead? Of course not! People choose who they want to have sex with. However, to follow God’s commandments, he reserved sex strictly between married men and women. Again, don’t believe the Bible???? Knock yourself out and do whatever it is you want (outside of with children, because at least so far, it’s STILL against the law…we’ll see how long that stays the same.. I’m sure with time, enough NAMBLA lobbyists will make people think they were “born” to have to have sex with children and it will be acceptable. Think I’m crazy?? NO ONE would be even fathoming the thought of legal gay marriage 30, 40 or 50 years ago!)

With all that said, I truly don’t care what the government does about legalizing gay marriage and I don’t think true Christians should worry much about it. On the same token, I have no problem with Mormons or FLDS having plural marriages, as long as they are consenting adults that want to do it and they’re not forcing young girls to marry those old geezers against their will! In fact, the Bible is clear in Romans 13 that we as Christians should be in subjection to the “authorities” or governments. Therefore, if California or the whole US wants to legalize gay marriage, so be it. If it becomes the law, a true Christian will respect it.

HOWEVER, and I can’t be more clear here, the Bible also states at Acts 5:29, “we must obey God as ruler rather than men”. If a law or rule by any government CONFLICTS with that of a Biblical law, the Biblical law trumps that of the government’s. Therefore, if a church or religion strictly believes that homosexuality is wrong because their guidebook (the Bible) states it is, then that church should be able to exercise their “freedom of religion” too and not have to accept gays/lesbians into their church. If a church makes that choice, it should NOT be considered discrimination if it is only following its religious beliefs.

However, that same church that doesn’t allow gays into its church should equally NOT try to interfer with the government that wants to pass a law that allows gay marriage NOR with a church that has decided to accept gay marriage (this answers your last question). The governments AND those churches that allow gays in their churches and accept gay marriage will have to answer to God for their actions, not to other people or other churches.

For those that believe the Bible is actually true, you can read these scriptures that show why the Bible (God) condemns homosexuality:

Gen 18 – God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of its sexual practices
Romans 1:27 – Talks about men lusting after each other, having sex and that it was an “error”. Contrary to what Obama said, this is not just some “obscure” scripture!
Jude 7 – homosexuals would suffer eternal destruction
Leviticus 18:22 – a man who lies with a man the way he lies with a woman is detestable

That’s just a sample, as there are more. I know this post will upset people on both sides. Hard core “Christians” who just hate gays in general will be upset because I’m saying Christians need to stay out of it and let the governments and people do what they want. Gays, lesbians and “Christians” who support gay lifestyle and marriage will say I’m a nutcase because I believe in some antiquated book and that “Jesus loved everybody”. Jesus did love everybody but he did NOT tolerate sin. Read John 8: 3-11.

When the Pharisees brought an adulterous woman (not gay, just having sex with other men while she was still married) to Jesus to see what should be done with her, he said, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” He said this because he knew ALL people sin, those Pharisees were sinners, so if they thought they were so perfect, why didn’t one or all of them just pick up a stone and kill her for adultery? This is what a lot of supporters of homosexuality in Christianity will point to, that Jesus loved everyone and was forgiving of everything. However, what they fail to do is look at the end of that account where it said, “Jesus declared. “Go now and LEAVE your life of sin.”

Again, she had to change her course in order to be acceptable.

    Ok, done with my rant!

  • because the christian don’t want people to believe anything other than the bible. the person who said the earth goes around the sun got burned alive because the bible said the sun goes around the earth. like the christian priest raping children in the church is OK with them as long as they cover it up while other people who live a happy life who don’t believe in their bible can go to hell.
