Lightning Safety Week, promoted by the National Weather Service, attempts to raise awareness for one of the deadliest weather phenomena peaking during the summer season. According to the National Fire Protection Association, annually an estimated 24,600 fires are started by lightning, causing on average 12 civilian deaths, 47 injuries and $ 407 million in direct property damage.
