A Dangerous Woman: New Biography of Adah Isaacs Menken Tells the Fascinating Story of America’s “Original Bad Girl”

A Dangerous Woman: New Biography of Adah Isaacs Menken Tells the Fascinating Story of America’s “Original Bad Girl”

A Dangerous Woman by Barbara and Michael Foster

New York, NY (Vocus/PRWEB) January 20, 2011

It’s tough being a sexy superstar in today’s media age. But try doing it in the middle of the prudish Victorian era. Yet for Adah Isaacs Menken, the “mother of theatrical and film nudity,” swimming against the current brought her overflow audiences from Broadway to Paris. She married five husbands, including the world heavyweight boxing champion. Her notable lovers ranged from kings to authors Alexandre Dumas and Algernon Swinburne, and some said George Sand, with whom she shared a penchant for crossdressing. Adah’s front-page scandals and under-the-counter nude photos made her an erotic sensation unequaled until Marilyn Monroe and her calendar a century later. Today’s wannabe bad girls aren’t in the same league.

A Dangerous Woman: The Life, Loves, and Scandals of Adah Isaacs Menken, 1835-1868, America’s Original Superstar (Globe Pequot, cloth, $ 24.95) is Barbara and Michael Foster’s immensely enjoyable new biography of America’s first supernova. Wrote cub reporter Mark Twain about how Adah captivated gold rush San Francisco: “A magnificent spectacle dazzled my vision—the whole constellation of the Great Menken came flaming out of the heavens.” The Fosters’ definitive yet easy-to-read biography, with photos by Napoleon Sarony, the Rembrandt of the camera, brings to startling life the pin-up girl for Civil War troops North and South. “The Naked Lady” grew closely involved in the conflict: No wonder, Adah was born, as the NAACP recognized, “a colored girl from New Orleans.”

The daughter of a beautiful Creole mother, father unknown, Adah had a series of stepfathers, one who abused her, another who taught her the classics. Jewish by religion, Adah grew up in Texas where she became a trick rider in the circus. In Havana, she had a youthful love affair with Juan Zenea, a great Cuban poet shot as a revolutionary. Back in Texas, Adah married the musician Alex Isaac Menken, played in regional theaters, and fled from race riots to Alex’s hometown, Cincinnati.

Here, in the bosom of a wealthy family, Adah became a disciple of Rabbi Wise, founder of Reform Judaism. In his weekly Israelite she wrote articles and poems defending the Jewish people. Marital discord and her burning ambition caused Adah to leave for New York, where she performed in everything from comedy to tragedy to song and dance. A friend of Walt Whitman, she defended his poetry, usually denounced as filth. Secretly, Adah married handsome, bare-knuckle champ John Heenan, who defeated the British champion to claim the world crown. Returned to America on the eve of the Civil War, Heenan became America’s first great sports hero. To please his English mistress he denounced Adah, and accusations back and forth stole the front pages from Abe Lincoln’s election.

Adah, depressed and suicidal, was saved by Prince Mazeppa, a role that led to fame. Sensational and sexy, the drama Mazeppa was based on a tribal prince who fought Tsarist tyranny. Adah dueled, declaimed, and rode a “wild stallion” up a four-story stage mountain—while stripped apparently naked. From Albany to the Midwest and Nevada’s booming Virginia City, the crowds went wild over this man/woman performance. The miners pelted Adah with bags of gold dust, which, dressed as a sporting gent, she gambled away all night. Shedding a fourth husband, a literary critic, Adah sailed from the Golden Gate to London, carrying along her final husband-to-be, a Rhett Butler-style Confederate agent.

Across Britain, Adah’s popularity swelled, and she thrilled young Arthur Conan Doyle, who would make her the heroine of his first Sherlock Holmes story. Le Menken became the toast of Paris, the world’s highest paid performer. Making clever use of the era’s new media—newspapers, the telegraph, trains, and steamboats, above all the camera—Adah became the first universal Love Goddess, the godmother to Harlow, Monroe, and Princess Diana. From royalty to authors such as Charles Dickens—who wanted to do a double act with her—everyone of note attended Menken’s salons. She was pursued by would-be lovers, including Emperor Napoleon III, and new front-page scandals.

The lifespan of the love goddess—the few who dominated the libido of their time—is not long. They fly high and sparkling until, at a young age, they crash to earth. Adah’s daredevil act and devil-may-care life ended at thirty-three. She died in a Paris garret, the poet Longfellow at her side, writing a eulogy, while a crowd stormed a nearby theater, demanding to see their Naked Lady. Adah’s influence on glamour, fashion, and lifestyle lives on—through her poetry and those who write about her, and a series of movies in which she has been portrayed by Ruth Roman, Sophia Loren, and recently Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes. In the Fosters’ A Dangerous Woman, Adah Menken is born again.

“What an extraordinary life!”

—Michael York, distinguished film actor

“Your retelling of Menken’s story is fascinating.”

—Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Chair, Harvard Dept. of African American Studies

“The Fosters’ skillful narrative biography of nineteenth-century superstar Adah Menken captures the richness and complexity of this Civil War-era Jezebel, an archetypal American bad girl.”

—Eve LaPlante, author of American Jezebel

“The most fascinating woman I have ever read about. This book is utterly compelling.”

—Jack Engelhard, author of Indecent Proposal

Previous books by the Fosters include the widely translated Three In Love: menages a trois from ancient to modern times (Harper/Collins) and The Secret Lives of Alexandra David-Neel (Overlook), rated one of the best books of all time by the New York Review of Books.

Michael Foster, born in Brooklyn, is a novelist, biographer, and historian who graduated from Cornell with honors in philosophy. He received an MFA from the Writer’s Workshop, Iowa. His novel Freedom’s Thunder (Avon, 1980), was praised by Nobel laureate Isaac B. Singer. His writing style was described by Entertainment Weekly as “racy and engaging.”

Barbara Foster, associate Professor at CUNY, has published many articles on travel and more than 200 poems in journals in various countries. Barbara has presented dozens of acclaimed slide shows on the life of Alexandra David-Neel from Washington’s Smithsonian to Cal Tech, Sidney, Buenos Aires, and Prague. Barbara appears on TV, radio, and in print/Net interviews.

Generation Opportunity Poll: Young Americans (18-29) Rate America?s Debt as the Top National Security Issue

Generation Opportunity Poll: Young Americans (18-29) Rate America’s Debt as the Top National Security Issue

Washington, DC (PRWEB) July 26, 2011

Generation Opportunity, the new, non-profit, non-partisan organization educating, engaging, and mobilizing young Americans 18-29 years old on the immediate and long-term economic challenges facing the nation – such as the lack of job opportunities and increasing debt and federal spending – is releasing new data from its national study on Millennials revealing the top national security issues of concern to young Americans.

The top national security issue is the debt.

In priority order, young Americans believe that the national debt, increased dependency on foreign sources of energy, and America’s indebtedness to foreign powers have made America more vulnerable. To reduce these risks and to manage these national security challenges, young Americans believe elected officials in Washington, D.C. need to get the nation on a more stable economic footing by cutting federal spending rather than raising taxes and by increasing the production of domestic energy sources such as oil, natural gas, and coal.

“The generation that is expected to pay the skyrocketing federal debt is sending a clear signal to elected leaders of both parties in Washington – federal spending and debt, our indebtedness to foreign powers and our dependency on overseas sources of energy have placed the United States at risk,” said Paul T. Conway, president of Generation Opportunity. “These young Americans have witnessed first-hand how the poor economy and the lack of economic opportunity have negatively impacted their own lives, they think Washington is out of touch with their concerns and they know the status quo and continued failure to lead jeopardizes both our present national security and our future status as a global leader. ”

INSIGHTS ON NATIONAL SECURITY & THE AMERICAN ECONOMY AMONG YOUNG ADULTS

Generation Opportunity recently commissioned a poll with the polling company, inc./WomanTrend (April 16 – 22, 2011, +/- 4% margin of error) and highlights some of the results below.

National Security Concerns and The Future of American Leadership:

Top 3 greatest threats to American National Security: National Debt (62%), Energy Dependency (61%) and Indebtedness to Foreign Powers (50%). The threat of terrorism at (39%) followed as the fourth major national security concern.

Millennials – when asked on a scale of 1 (meaning not at all) to 5 (meaning a very big concern) how much of a concern America’s current “financial debt”/”deficit” rates, 66% indicated very big concerns with America’s “financial debt’ and 71% indicated very big concerns about America’s ‘deficit.’

54% – more than one half – are not confident that the US will be a global leader in just 10 years. Only 9% said they were “very confident” that the US would be.

70% (net) would increase production of domestic energy sources like oil, natural gas and coal; only 22% (net) would decrease production of the same energy sources.

76% view China as a danger: 48% as an economic threat and 28% as both an economic and military threat.

Millennials and The Path Ahead – Putting America’s Fiscal House in Order:

76% would like to see federal spending decreased.

69% prefer reducing federal spending over raising taxes on individuals in order to balance the Federal budget.

59% believe the economy grows best when individuals are allowed to create businesses without government interference.

53% indicate if taxes on business profits were reduced, companies would be more likely to hire.

Only 31% approve of President Obama’s handling of youth unemployment.

America’s Forgotten Holiday: Constitution Day is September 17th

America’s Forgotten Holiday: Constitution Day is September 17th

Tenth Amendment Center: 10-4 Pledge

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) September 14, 2009

This year, seven states have passed sovereignty resolutions under the 10th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Two states passed laws nullifying some federal firearms regulations. Thirteen states now have Medical Marijuana laws in direct opposition to federal laws. And three states are considering constitutional amendments allowing residents to effectively opt-out of any future national health care plan.

What does this have to do with September 17th, Constitution Day? According to Michael Boldin, founder of the Tenth Amendment Center, everything. “The Constitution of the United States was a revolutionary document,” he said. “Before it, no government in history had seen its duties and restrictions so clearly and carefully defined”

When the Constitution was being considered for ratification, there was strong opposition from famous American figures that included George Mason and Patrick Henry. “One major reason for this was a fear of too much power,” said Boldin. “The founding generation spent their lives toiling under a tyranny – a government without limits,” he continued. “When the Constitution was written, it was done to limit the power of government. It was created under the principle of popular sovereignty – that ‘We the People’ created the government, and all powers not delegated to it, were retained.”

According to the Tenth Amendment Center, the People delegated approximately 35 powers to the federal government and not included in those powers are national health care, the creation of free speech zones, federal gun regulations, the war on drugs, and more.

“The Constitution is not exclusively for either the left or the right. It established rules for limiting government power so your liberty would have a better chance of success,” continued Boldin. “The founders created a system of government where the most important and most difficult issues would be kept close to home, and that’s just the opposite of how things are today. That’s why we created the 10-4 Pledge so people can find candidates for office who believe in the strict limitations on power that the Constitution stands for.”

The 10-4 Pledge is a set of 10 affirmations and 10 promises for legislators and candidates. Included in the pledge is an affirmation that “All just political authority is derived from the People,” and a promise that elected officials will always vote “in favor of the Constitution of the United States. Every issue. Every time. No exceptions. No excuses.”

Already, several prominent candidates have affirmed these positions as early-signers of the pledge, including Randy Brogdon for Governor of Oklahoma, Adam Kokesh for US House in New Mexico, and Brandon Creighton from the Texas House of Representatives and author of HCR-50 – the Texas Sovereignty Resolution.

Gary DeMar and “America’s Heritage” — Unsuccessful Effort to Link Christianity and the Constitution

“America’s Heritage” by Gary DeMar is an unsuccessful attempt to link Christianity and the U.S. Constitution. The book was published by Coral Ridge Ministries in 2002.

A Christian Constitution?

The fundamental question is posed in the Introduction, “America’s Christian Heritage: Fact or Fiction?” The foregone conclusion is “fact,” and the book presents the usual assortment of quotes from various Presidents and Supreme Court Justices as evidence. This line of indirect testimony continues throughout the book. Plaques and inscriptions in Washington D.C., the Christian founding of various colleges, and official national days of prayer are presented as evidence.

The author then points to Christianity in the colonial constitutions, which is indisputable. But he tries to bridge from there to show an alleged link between Christianity and the Constitution of 1787. This is highly disputable.

Gary DeMar then presents the two shopworn internal arguments. One is the phrase “year of our Lord” in the subscription clause at the end of the document. Another is the exception of Sunday from the 10 days in which the President must sign or veto a bill. In the lexicon of Informal Logic these are known as trivial arguments.

For example, Christians would not be accused of worshipping the “god of thunder” just because they commonly refer to “Thursday” (ThorsDay) in everyday use of language. Neither should we assume the founding fathers are writing a Christian document merely because they refer to the Christian phrase, “year of our Lord 1787” in everyday use of language.

The Biblical Standard

How can we determine if Gary DeMar has proved that the Constitution is a Christian document and that America is therefore a Christian nation? We need some standard for evaluation. Only the Bible can provide such a standard. Without that standard we are likely to be distracted by various entertaining, but irrelevant arguments. What does the Bible say about deciding whether a particular nation is a Christian nation, or not?

In all His dealings with Israel God insists that the nation maintain its covenant relation with Him by means of an oath to obey His law. Continually Israel returns to an act of formal, oath-bound commitment to God, often written, to renew the broken covenant.

Without the oath-bound covenant to a legal system based on the Bible there is no Christian nation. This is the defining characteristic of a “Christian nation.” There may be many other attractive features, but without the oath there is nothing that may be called a Christian nation.

Nehemiah 9:38 provides us a clear example, when it says, “…We are making an agreement in writing; and on the sealed document are the names of our leaders, our Levites and our priests.” Judging by this standard, we are forced to conclude that Gary DeMar and “America’s Heritage” have failed to prove the case. It has demonstrated no essential link between Christianity and the Constitution.

Do Christian colleges constitute a national oath to God? No. Does the phrase “year of our Lord” constitute a national oath to God? No. Does excluding Sunday from the 10-day window to sign or veto a bill constitute a national oath to God? No. Does any of the evidence presented in America’s Heritage constitute a national oath to God? No.

We can only conclude that Gary DeMar has not succeeded in showing that the Constitution of the United States has any Christian Foundation. The author has fallen short of establishing any vital link between Christianity and the Constitution.

Sadly, Gary DeMar takes a nonchalant attitude toward the covenant oath to God. At the end of Chapter 3 a rhetorical question is presented: “If the constitutional framers could get a glimpse of America today, would they have rethought their decision only to make passing reference to the lordship of Jesus Christ?”

The answer: “We will never know. But when all the testimony is in, it is an undeniable truth that Christianity served as the foundation for the political edifice we know as America.” Here Gary DeMar admits that the Constitution left out the one essential ingredient for a Christian government — the lordship of Jesus Christ. However, In the next breath he claims that America is a Christian nation anyway. The conclusion does not follow from the premise.

For this reason we are forced to conclude that “America’s Heritage” falls short of establishing any connection between Christianity and the Constitution and denies the cornerstone of Christian civil government.

‘Declare IT!’ Educational Program Helps Teach Students and Parents about Americas’ Founding Freedoms during Celebrate Freedom Week

‘Declare IT!’ Educational Program Helps Teach Students and Parents about Americas’ Founding Freedoms during Celebrate Freedom Week

Alpharetta, GA (PRWEB) September 12, 2006

The swell of patriotism that rolled across America after the attacks of 9-11 caused many lawmakers to take another look at American students’ declining report card in American history and civics. America’s students have scored poorly on civics tests and many know little about the basic freedoms on which America was founded.

As a result of this disturbing trend, state lawmakers in Florida and Arkansas followed Texas’ lead and in 2002 and 2003, initiated special curriculum programs in K-12 grades called Celebrate Freedom Week. According to the statutes, one week during each school year students will receive special instruction on America’s founding freedoms and founding documents like the Declaration of Independence.

“Declare IT!” (http://www.declareitprogram.com) is a new, privately sponsored program that supports Celebrate Freedom Week in Florida, Arkansas and Texas, offers additional program awareness and provides free teaching resources to teachers and parents.

Founded by Jack Boyd of Alpharetta, GA, the program offers a free, fun sing-along song and teaching resources with online links to lesson plans for Celebrate Freedom Week. Boyd founded the program after his two children did a high school history project on Celebrate Freedom Week in Florida. Boyd discovered that Floridians’ knowledge of the program was low and teacher participation was inconsistent.

“America’s students need a solid understanding of America’s history to become the leaders America needs in the future. Celebrate Freedom Week is a great step toward that goal. However, the program is not getting the focus it needs in many areas and teachers need our help. It’s appropriate on this 5-yr anniversary of 9-11, when we pause to remember the lives lost in that tragic event, that America’s teachers, leaders and parents recommit ourselves to teaching our children about the freedoms that were also attacked that day,” said Mr. Boyd.

In 1998, Jack Boyd and daughter Steffy wrote ‘The Declaration of Independence Song,’ a sing-along song to help Steffy learn the words to the Declaration for a 4th grade homework project. Offered on a CD to teachers and parents in 2002 through their website (http://www.declarationsong.com), the song has become very popular with teachers, home school parents and others across the country. The “Declare IT!” website offers a free download of a shortened version of Boyd’s popular sing-along plus an online video documentary on the history of Florida’s Celebrate Freedom Week.

America?s New National Security Risk P2p Networks

Washington, DC & Hollywood, Calif. — “We found more than 200 classified government documents in a few hours search over Peer-2-Peer networks,” said Retired General Wesley K. Clark

at a recent Government Reform Committee hearing (7-24-07). Describing it as the new national security risk Clark said, “We found everything from Pentagon network server secrets to other sensitive information on P-2P networks hackers dream about.”

Clark, now the chairman and CEO, of Wesley K. Clark & Associates, and a board member of Tiversa, Inc., which conducts 350 million searches per day, compared to Google’s 150 million daily searches.

“If everyone knew the scope of the risk of P2P networks, America would be outraged and demand solutions” Clark suggested regulation and mandatory defensive active monitoring programs, especially for sensitive government documents. “If you wait for the lawsuit, you have waited too long.” Clark noted that many of our national information security leaks were fresh, complete and often were distributed on home computers over P2P networks.

Chairman Henry Waxman (D) investigating the P2P networks invited LimeWire and StreamCast to testify along with other interested experts on illegal filesharing before the U.S. Houses of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Last March, United States Patent and Trademark Office released a study revealing that inadvertent file-sharing continued to threaten individual privacy and national security.

“This is the new threat to Homeland Security,” CEO Robert Boback, told the hearing. “We found thousands of corporate cases from banking statements, server passwords, financial data, public company data, human resources, medical records and fortune 500 company minutes on compliance.”

“One of the defining characteristics of contaminated networks is that users rarely ever know that they are sharing the files on their computer with other users on the network,” said SafeMedia Corporation Chairman Safwat Fahmy in his written testimony on how SafeMedia’s technology was developed to address illegal sharing of copyrighted materials on contaminated P2P networks. “Our technology eliminates all the identity theft and security risks of contaminated P2P networks that affect consumers, students, businesses and our national security.”

Fahmy also stated in his written testimony to the Committee that, “P2P networks, in order to work and survive, requires that all users share files. If users are unable to share files to be downloaded, then the network would be pointless and cease to exist. So, the developers of the P2P software create a directory on the user’s computer called “shared” to be uploaded on demand to any user on the entire network most often without the user knowledge, at the time of installation.”

Other startling testimony surfaced from Professor M. Eric Johnson, director, Center for Digital Strategies, Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College. To illustrate the threat of P2P file sharing, his researchers ran a set of “honey-pot” experiments. They posted the text of an email message containing an active VISA (debit) number and an AT&T phone card in a music directory in a contaminated P2P network that was shared via Limewire.

“It appears that two takers of the card were able to obtain funds as the activity was split into two groups,” Johnson told the hearing. And it happened, “because one taker used Paypal, which is more US-centric, while the other used Nochex, which is UK-centric. Within another week, the calling card was also depleted. Examining the call records of the card, all of the calls were made from outside of the US to two US area codes – 347 (Bronx, NY) and 253 (Tacoma, WA), illustrating the P2P threat both within and outside of the US. Even more interesting, long after we stopped sharing the file, we observed the file continuing to move to new clients as some of the original takers leaked the file to others.”

In a second study, researchers examined bank-related documents and found circulating sensitive data as bank statements, credit reporting agency records, user ID and password lists and tax returns were inadvertently “shared” with millions of people. There was also evidence of sensitive government information being distributed through P2P networks over a two-month period.

“At SafeMedia, we have developed business solutions combining P2P Disaggregator technology (P2PD) and a Digital Internet Distribution Solution (DIDS) that prevents contaminated P2P networks from indiscriminately being accessed by users’ computers,” explained Fahmy. “Our solutions utilize advanced technologies such as: Adaptive Fingerprinting and DNA markers; Adaptive network patterns; Intelligent libraries; Remote update and Self-healing to effectively drop all contaminated P2P traffic with No Invasion of User Privacy. P2PD is fully effective at forensically discriminating between contaminated and non-contaminated P2P traffic with no false positives whether encrypted or not: P2PD operates at network speed with little or no latency.”

Fahmy added “The purpose of P2PD technology is not to shut down P2P networks or inhibit P2P technology. “We allow traffic from non contaminated P2P to pass to its destination we only drop traffic to and from contaminated P2P networks.

“Many users now are enjoying the protection of their identity and safety of their network from contaminated P2P network by using SafeMedia’s products which are available now for immediate implementation in DSL/Cable modems or as a standalone network appliance named” Clouseau” said Fahmy.
