SLDN Announces Mullen to Headline Military Tribute Marking One Year Anniversary of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Repeal

Admiral Mike Mullen, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 26, 2012

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) today announced UBS, Verizon, and BNY Mellon as the inaugural sponsors of a tribute to former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, who will headline the celebration aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City to mark the one-year anniversary of the repeal of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law. The event – “Celebrating Our Heroes” – will take place on Tuesday, September 18, 2012, and will be the first in a series of high profile events hosted by SLDN across the country during the week to commemorate the first year of open service by America’s gay and lesbian service members. The anniversary of repeal is September 20.

“This historic and emotional event presents a unique – indeed, a once in a lifetime – opportunity to reinforce the meaningful part that Admiral Mullen played in the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal process. No one played a more pivotal role than Admiral Mullen in securing the support of Congress and the military for repeal,” said Army Veteran and SLDN Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis.

Members of Congress and observers alike sat transfixed as he testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on February 2, 2010, at the height of the repeal fight, saying:

“No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens. For me, it comes down to integrity – theirs as individuals and ours as an institution.”

“We thank our inaugural sponsors – UBS, Verizon, and BNY Mellon – for their strong commitment to equality in our nation’s military and for their generous support for all service members and veterans. Admiral Mullen represents the very best American values – integrity, commitment, and service. We are proud to see these employers aligned with him today and demonstrating a deep commitment to full LGBT equality in this country,” said Sarvis.

The New York City tribute on September 18 will begin with a VIP reception at 5:30 p.m. The general admission event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will conclude at 9:30 p.m. For more information, to sponsor the event, or to purchase tickets, visit http://www.sldn.org/intrepid2012.

10th Anniversary MetLife National Study Cites Need for Cutting Edge Employee Benefits

10th Anniversary MetLife National Study Cites Need for Cutting Edge Employee Benefits

A Marketplace USA Chaplain greets a bank employee during his regular rounds as part of the companies’ unique benefit package.

Plano, TX (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

The 10th anniversary of the prestigious MetLife Study of Employee Benefit Trends highlighted the need for cutting edge benefits like Marketplace Chaplains which today serves more than 500 corporate clients with 2,669 service locations in the U.S. and worldwide. Each year, the national study explores an evolving benefits landscape from the point of view of employers and employees across all U.S. regions, industries and company sizes. Through both robust years and turbulent economic times, the study has identified significant key findings and insights that have served to inform and shape today’s benefits strategies for employers and their advisors.

The study marks a decade of decoding and discovering these benefits. A key finding this year is 60% of surveyed employers recognize the precarious economic climate, rather than reducing business focus on employee benefits, actually creates opportunity for benefits to drive human capital. In addition, the study found employees are less committed to their employers, but at the same time, are highly dependent on their workplace benefits according to the published study summary.

That’s exactly what Rilo Stephens, President & CEO of Atlanta-based client company, Eckardt Electric Co. found when he decided to employ Marketplace Chaplains as a new employee benefit for his company.

It’s important to have someone on-site and professionally trained to be there for the employees and their family members,” he said of his growing company of 125 employees spread out over the Southeast U.S. “Our customers are asking more of us and we are asking more of each other; it’s a very pressured and stressed time for all of us and we see the chaplains make a huge impact on all of us.”

According to the published information, one of the Study’s most significant findings is the strong relationship between satisfaction with benefits and job satisfaction. First noted in 2004 and every year since, this correlation creates compelling evidence for the power of benefits to drive a universal set of business objectives – employee attraction, retention and productivity. It is a central tenet for benefits professionals and justifies benefits investment to senior management.

“It doesn’t matter if the company is large or small, Fortune 100 or family-owned, having a professional caregiver who is a trained and caring Marketplace Chaplain has proven to benefit the company’s bottom line and their top line, employees and their family members,” said Marketplace Chaplains’ President & COO Dick De Witt.

“Our industry has seen a great deal of change over the last four-to-five years and putting the chaplain service in place is one of the best business decisions I have made,” added Stephens.

Ten years ago employees expected benefits, but were far less engaged in their true value, the study reported. Today, new economic realities are driving employees to more fully appreciate the benefits that their employers provide – even if they have to pay more of the costs themselves.

The benefits are an indispensable ingredient in how the working American family achieves short- and long-term financial security. Indeed it’s unlikely that workplace benefits have ever been as desirable or important as they are in the current era.

9/11 Anniversary: Ten Years of Lies

Ten years ago I was a freshman in college sitting in a physics classroom. I watched the 9/11 attacks on TV with my professors and classmates. When we first saw the towers go down, our initial conclusion was that they had been blown up. I left campus that day with a friend and drove out to the country expecting a scene like the movie “Red Dawn” to unfold. When nothing happened I went back to my normal way of student life and never thought about or questioned what I saw on TV that day until 4 years later when I watched a documentary about the attacks which piques my interest. I began my research as a skeptic with scientific training and background, but soon began to uncover overwhelming evidence of a larger conspiracy. I decided to devote all my time towards uncovering and exposing the truth in order to bring justice to the thousands who lost their lives that tragic day. This video is a compilation of all the best evidence I have found in the past 6 years of research I have done into 9/11. My aim is to encourage viewers to support the victim’s families plea for a new investigation of 9/11 and give them the specific areas and people who I feel should be investigated most. Freedom Journal Celebrates 177th Year Anniversary

Freedom Journal Celebrates 177th Year Anniversary

(PRWEB) March 14, 2004

The cost of freedom is truly a priceless gift worthy of celebration at any time. What makes this celebration a special one? The Freedom Journal is celebrating it’s 177th Year Anniversary as America’s Oldest African American Publication in the USA. As an added bonus, Dr. Alphonso Hamilton, Publisher received on behalf of Freedom Journal the distinguished honor of having the Councilman Bernard Parks along with the entire Los Angeles City Council proclaim March 12-14 as Freedom Journal Weekend in the City of Los Angeles.

To understand the rich legacy behind this publication, we must look at the life of its visionary and founder, John Brown Russwurm, editor, politician, and one ofthe nation’s first black college graduates. Born to a slave mother and a white American merchant father, Russwurm was educated in Quebec and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1826. Upon graduation, he went to New York, where he found that media that was pro slavery and critical of free blacks in the United States. Samuel Cornish who edited and published the publication was born of free parents about 1795, in Delaware and raised in the relatively free environments of Philadelphia and New York City. Although he was an ordained minister and organized the first Black Presbyterian Church in the United States, he is best remembered as a journalist.

Russwurm and Presbyterian minister Samuel Cornish launched the Freedom Journal on March 16, 1827. The headline read, “We wish to plead our own cause. Too long have others spoken for us.” The basic theme of the newspaper was to vocalize demands to end slavery in the South and gain equal rights for blacks in the North and attacked slavery and demanded full and equal citizenship for blacks.

Dr. Alphonso Hamilton, Publisher of Freedom Journal continues to preserve the richness of the African American heritage envisioned by these great men. Read by thousands, Dr. Hamilton states that he firmly believes that before there was America there was Black History. It would take a trillion issues of Freedom Journal to write about the courageous exploits of our many heroes and sheroes. So as the legacy of the Freedom Journal continues we look forward to next 177 years with continue hope for a better tomorrow.

Americans? ?Constitution IQ? Surprisingly High As 220th Anniversary Approaches

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 11, 2007 –

With the 220th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution approaching on September 17th, Americans know more about the landmark document than expected, according to a recent poll of 22,838 Americans by ConstitutionFacts.com.

While Americans in the Midwest region (IL, IN, MI, OH and WI) scored higher than their counterparts, scores across the country were consistently strong.

“Besides Math, English and other academic areas … probably the most important subject any of us should know is our country’s Constitution and our Constitutional rights, and it looks like Americans are scoring well in this area,” according to Keir Walton, publisher of the first annual Constitution Day poll at ConstitutionFacts.com, a website dedicated to helping people understand the Constitution.

According to the poll, more than 88 percent of Americans knew that laws were made by Congress, 92 percent that criminals have the right to hear witnesses against them, and 94 percent that they have the right to invoke the 5th amendment to avoid self-incrimination.

The Constitution is considered remarkable because it has stood the test of time. It was written for a country with four million people. Now the U.S. is home to more than 300 million people, and there have only been 27 amendments to the Constitution – including the Bill of Rights – in 220 years.

While Constitution IQ scores are surprisingly strong, an expanded poll of 4,733 Americans by constitutionfacts.com highlighted confusion between the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Only 27 percent of Americans knew that the Constitution took effect in 1788, instead confusing it with the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which occurred 12 years earlier in 1776.

Walton said that even educators are guilty of the mix-up. One time, he said, an elementary school teacher produced a play in which John Hancock signed the Constitution – even though Hancock signed the Declaration, not the Constitution. Also, a high school superintendent, during a graduation ceremony, said that the words ”All men are created equal” appear in the Constitution. Actually, they appear in the Declaration of Independence.

Walton says he hopes that by providing a handy and accessible website containing copies of the country’s three main historical documents – the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation – misinformation about these documents can be eradicated.

To find out your Constitution IQ, and see how you compare with others statewide and nationally, take the online poll at www.constitutionfacts.com

The online, non-scientific poll of 22,838 Americans was conducted by constitutionfacts.com from Jan. 1 – Aug. 12, 2007. Participants were evenly split between women (49.9%) and men (50.1%) with an average age of 30 years old. Regionally, East North Central had the highest average score of 7.58, followed closely by the South Atlantic region, averaging 7.57. Only two of the nine U.S. regions – West North Central and West South Central – scored lower than the national average of 7.272. Idaho had the highest percentage of perfect scores, followed by Hawaii, Alaska, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan. For more information on the poll, visit www.constitutionfacts.com
