Islamic Preacher Barred from the UK Set to Address Oxford Union in Historic Debate

Islamic Preacher Barred from the UK Set to Address Oxford Union in Historic Debate

(PRWeb UK) January 31, 2011

Islamic preacher and orator, Dr Zakir Naik, is set to address the prestigious debating society the Oxford Union next week – despite being barred from the UK.

Peace promoting Dr Naik will address the Oxford Union at 7.00pm on FRIDAY FEBRUARY 11 2011, and then hold a Q & A session with undergraduates and academics via satellite link at the world-renowned university.

The event highlights Home Secretary Theresa May’s controversial decision to exclude Dr Naik, who is founder and Chairman of the global TV channel Peace TV, from the UK.

News of the Oxford address came only days after Dr Naik was allowed to enter France to host a board meeting of his TV company in Paris – highlighting the injustice of the UK’s Exclusion Order.

His visa allowing him to enter France was granted on December 13 after officials decided they were happy for him to visit. The Schengen visa allowed him to visit 25 European countries.

Yesterday Dr Naik, whose appeal against his UK ban is due to be held in the Court of Appeal later this year, said: “I am delighted to address the historic Oxford Union.

“This gives me the perfect opportunity to show the British people my true views rather than the distorted and false grounds cited by the Home Secretary.”

Dr Naik plans to address the Oxford Union on peace and religious tolerance and will join a host of Internationally famous previous speakers, including current PM David Cameron, Winston Churchill, US Presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and film stars including Dame Julie Walters, Ewan McGregor, Michael Jackson and Stephen Fry.

Dr Naik has been forced into addressing the Union by satellite link as a result of his exclusion – a necessity which organizers have privately confided is likely to have an impact on turn out.

Dr Naik was excluded from the UK In June 2010. Court papers revealed days earlier Charles Farr, Director General of the Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism, said he would “put himself on the line” for Dr Naik and then said he was “gutted and mortified” by the exclusion. He even then discussed a plan to try to help Dr Naik get into the country.

Meanwhile one of his senior officials Sabin Khan was suspended for criticizing the exclusion as a “huge error of judgement .”

Dr Naik’s supporters, who delivered a petition to No10 with over 10,000 signatures protesting against the exclusion, say the decision was unreasonable and blatant political postering – based on completely flawed reasoning, which unfairly victimised a peaceful man who has addressed millions around the world. The move cost charities organising his scheduled tour over £500,000.

Dr Naik was due to address tens of thousands of people at London’s Wembley Arena, Birmingham’s L G Arena – NEC and the Sheffield Arena.

But just eight days before the first engagement his five year multiple entry visa, granted in July 2008, was revoked despite him having flown to the UK twice on that visa. Over the last twenty years he has visited the UK 15 times (9 of these were exclusively for public lecture) and has delivered more than 1300 public lectures all over the world without any problems.

Last year at London’s High Court Justice Cranston granted Dr Naik a judicial review and declared THREE decisions made by the Home Secretary to exclude Dr Naik on June 16, 17 and 25 were “unlawful.’

However he decided a FOURTH attempt was legal despite accepting Dr Naik didn’t have a chance to respond to all of the issues raised in the final decision.

The appeal, asserting his right to freedom of expression , will focus on what grounds the Home Secretary decided to go against the advice of Britain’s counter terrorism chief Farr and his team.

Supporters of Dr Naik insist that he is a reputable scholar on questions relating to Islam and comparative religion. He regularly addresses audiences of hundreds of thousands and organizes International Peace Conferences attended by over 1 million people. His whole ethos is built on enhancing the understanding of Islam and bringing world faiths together in the interests of promoting peace and understanding.

HISTORIC CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM IN TURKEY

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turksih Prime Minister is quite upbeat after the results of the Constitutional Referrendum came pouring out which was held on sunday. It has paved the way for loosening the military grip over Turkey though based on secualr credentials and also the Judicial Superiority, in the words of Turkish educational Minister, ‘Judicial Dictatorship’. The acceptance of Constitutional Reform Package by the majority of Turkish citizens with 26 amendments has added to the personal image of Erdogan. His long-cherished dream of joining the European community is going to be materialised. Of what benefit it would bring about to Turkey still remains a question mark.

The very concept of the European community proved to be step in the wrong direction especially with it plunging into recession. The adoption of Euro as the currency by the 27 member community was a Himalayan blunder. In Kafkasque parlance a ‘ludicrous bungling’. Most recent phenomenon being the recession in Greece and it is a public secret that Greek Prime Minister George Pappandreau in his marathon efforts to rescue the Greek economy, in the words of economists – the great Greek tragedy – had to fly all the way to other member countries of EU and World financial institutions like International Monetary Fund, pleading for generous help to have a breathing space in his home soil. The EU members like Germany under Angela Merkel, already reeling under recession hesitated first citing domestic, economic situation but Greece being a member of EU had to be rescued at any cost the member countries contributed their mite hesitatingly though. IMF with the attitude of a Shylock provided funds in part ofcourse with many strings attached.

]]>

Consequently Pappandreau was forced to introduce austerity measures like hiking the pension age to 65 years, reduce the pension and salary amounts, slowing down the recruitment drive to the consternation and massive protests across Greece inviting violent clashes.

During the formation of European Community Britain didn’t concede to embrace Euro as its currency, instead stuck to its own currency Pound Sterling. Like all European nations, Britain too was a sufferer of recession, true, their sticking to Pound Sterling paid dividends. The Euro – adopted countries, on the other hand could not but extricate themselves that easily. Euro established itself and it was there to stay.

Talking about Turkey, in the referrendum held by Erdogan’s party, Justice and Development Party (AKP) 58 percent of the electorate out of the 78 percent turnout chose to favour democracy, of course based on secularism thus enabling Turkey to join the European community.

Turkey has already established the prominence in the region being a powerful player, many countries of equal importance like the Latin American countries Brazil, Venezeula and the West Asian countries like Iran joining company with it.

Six months back, Lula Da De Silva, President of Brazil and Hugo Chavez, Venezeula President met with Erdogan in Turkey and signed an agreement on the hot issue of Iran’s low enrichment of Uranium to convert into isotopes obviously with the concurrence of Iranian authorities. After signing the agreement US the proclaimed enemy of Iran went on with its decision to impose sanctions on America with the five permanent members of UN Security Council and the sanctions came into force. Russia and China initially were with Iran being the latter’s friendly nations but succumbed to constant pressure of US authorities.

Turkey till a few months back, though was in good terms with Israel also that ‘bonhomie’ lasted not long.

A Turkish charity boat sailing to the shores of Palestine with relief supplies to distribute among the impoverished citizens at the Gaza strip, captured by Israeli commandos, and they shot dead some of the occupants of the boat including NGOs in the International waters violating all norms to the wrath of nations across the world. Similarly a few other boats were also blocked and captured by them paying no heed to the protests of nations around the world.

Erdogan upset and angered over the incident, burst out condemning Israel in no uncertain terms. Now that with the impending accession to EU community he might be nurturing ambitions of emerging more powerful in the International fora, how far he would be able to succeed remains to be seen.

The United Nation’s Historic Failure In Myanmar

The United Nation’s has just ruled that the continued detention of Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi legally violates the country’s own laws as well as those of the international community.

Of course, the legal opinion of the United Nations means very little to the military government of Myanmar. The sad reality is that Suu Kyi, has now spent 13 of the last 19 years under house arrest, with the ruling junta annually extending her detention despite years of intervention of the U.N.

The failure of the United Nations in Myanmar ( Burma) is just one more example of how ineffective the international organization is in solving global political issues. The repression of Burma and the injustice of Aung San Suu Kyi by the military government of Myanmar should be seen in an historical context.

In 1991, Burma held a democratic election and the opposition party to the military won eighty two percent of the vote. An articulate women with Burmese heritage by the name of Aung San Suu Kyi led the victorious opposition party. Stunned by their defeat, the military arrested everyone in the opposition party including Suu Kyi, voided the election and changed the name of the country to Myanmar.

Every year since the overthrow of that democratically elected government the response of the United Nations has been to issue Resolutions. Resolutions that have been ignored by the country’s ruling military junta. The truth is that the United Nations can surely produce an impressive pile of words on paper but it is historically lacking in the will and skill to produce a tangible political outcome that promotes basic human rights and justice.

As the years have gone by, the sad situation in Myanmar has continued to deteriorate, with the country becoming a helpless victim to the military junta. In 2005, former Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel and South Africa’s retired Bishop Desmond M. Tutu, wrote a report on the dubious situation in the country for United Nations Security Council.

The report outlined in detail the myriad of problems in the country. It was a report that 14 years after the overthrow of legitimate democratic rule, indirectly highlighted the United Nations total failure in changing the political and human rights conditions in Myanmar.

The 2005 Havel/Tutu report was a complete indictment of the most brutal military dictatorship in the world today. The report described a country that was the world’s leading producer of heroin and was heavily involved in drug trafficking.

In addition, over 200,000 refugees had fled the country to escape the brutality of the military regime. There were no basic human rights, children’s rights, healthcare, education, political rights or free speech. Atrocities such as murder, rape, and forced labor were common. In addition, HIV aids was a major national problem and the country was the poorest in the world. That United Nations Report from 2005 could be written about the conditions in Myanmar today.

As the United Nations produces Resolutions, Reports, Diplomatic Missions and empty Sanctions, the years have certainly not been kind to the people of Myanmar. The injustice to the democratically elected Aung San Suu Kyi has now reached nearly two decades.

Just last week, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the United States as a “deadbeat” donor to the world body because it is perennially late paying its dues. However, since the United States pays 22 percent of the organization’s nearly billion operating budget, it is a major sponsor of this institution of political incompetence.

Indeed, spending nearly 5 billion dollars a year on an organization as historically corrupt and politically dysfunctional as the United Nations is not deadbeat but delusional. The stark reality is that the United Nations does not improve the human condition except as a agency of charity and disaster relief.

The United States should insist on real reform from the U.N. but to begin to reform anything the United Nations needs first to look back to the principles of its original Charter. A Charter that; “reaffirms faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small”.

The historic failure of the U.N. in Myanmar shows how far it has lost its way. The United States should withhold its annual dues until the U.N. Charter becomes its guiding force not the deadbeat document of empty words that it has become today.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) September 7, 2008

Background on Constitution Day

In late 2004, Senator Robert Byrd, one of the United States Senate’s leading Constitutional scholars, introduced legislation that President George W. Bush signed into law on December 8, 2004 requiring that all schools, colleges and Federal agencies receiving Federal funds offer annual educational programming involving the Constitution of the United States on or around Constitution Day, September 17th.

“Walking in the Founding Fathers’ footsteps with The Constitutional Walking Tour of Philadelphia is a great way to commemorate Constitution Day. Along the tour, visitors see many important sites related to the U.S. Constitution including The First Bank of the United States which sparked the first great Constitutional debate between strict and loose constructionalists,” stated Jonathan Bari, Chairman of The Constitutional Walking Tour. “Whether you want to visit Historic Philadelphia in person, or take a “virtual field trip,” we can assist in integrating The Constitutional’s educational programming into your Constitution Day curriculum.”

Constitution Day Offerings, Plus Field Trips and Group Tours Year-Round
