Centice Corporation Selected to Participate in National Institutes of Health (NIH) Commercial Assistance Program (CAP)

Centice Corporation Selected to Participate in National Institutes of Health (NIH) Commercial Assistance Program (CAP)

Morrisville, NC (PRWEB) November 10, 2011

Centice Corporation, a pioneer in Coded Aperture Raman Spectroscopy and Hyper Spectral Imaging, announced today the selection of the company to participate in NIH’s Commercial Assistance Program. The NIH program is designed to assist SBIR Phase II companies who have demonstrated promising new technologies with additional resources, strategic planning expertise and broader industry exposure. Centice was the recipient of an SBIR Phase II grant in 2009. The grant was awarded to apply Coded Aperture Spectroscopy in analyzing key cardiac biomarkers in a Lateral Flow Immunoassay (LFI).

Coded Aperture spectroscopic design provides a number of advantages that were seen as necessary for better determination of cardiac events. Measuring cardiac biomarkers is faster, more reliable and less costly with Coded Aperture Design than with existing LFI reader technologies. Coded Aperture Raman Spectroscopy yields more data from a larger field of view than conventional pinhole or slit aperture designs.

“We are excited to engage with the healthcare industry to see where our technology can be applied in saving lives” said Centice CEO, Dr. Prasant Potuluri. “The grant proved there is significant value in more effectively measuring biomarkers in next generation LFI solutions.”

The poster accompanying the scientific paper presentation is available on the Centice website at http://www.centice.com under the Knowledge Center.

Answer by sixtiesradical
1) Republicans talk a lot about it and then do things to endanger it and fail to do things to ensure it.
2) Democrats don’t need to bellow about it, because they have nothing to cover up.
3) Republicans use “national security” as an excuse for pulling all kinds of sh!t they couldn’t get away with otherwise.

Toward a National Cartography – Online Exhibition of Antique American Maps at AmericanMapmaking.com

Toward a National Cartography – Online Exhibition of Antique American Maps at AmericanMapmaking.com

John Fitch, “A Map of the North West Parts of the United States of America”, 1785

(PRWEB) October 12, 2011

Boston Rare Maps, one of the country’s premier specialist dealers in rare and unusual antique maps, presents AmericanMapmaking.com, a virtual online exhibition of antique American maps from the late 18th Century. Originally hosted at the Harvard Map Collection, “Toward a National Cartography: American Mapmaking, 1782-1800” traces the evolution of mapmaking during the formative years after the American Revolution, revealing the ways in which Americans sought to transform the landscape to suit their newly established economic and political goals. Included in the exhibition are works by renowned mapmakers such as Osgood Carleton, Andrew Ellicott, John Fitch and many others. For additional information or to view the virtual exhibition online, please visit http://www.AmericanMapmaking.com.

Exhibition curator Michael Buehler of Boston Rare Maps originally assembled this lineup of rare and unusual maps for display at the Harvard Map Collection, and now offers the digital collection to viewers around the world. Buehler is a long-time collector of rare maps and historical ephemera, is a regular public speaker on the subject and has published numerous articles on “The Portolan”, the journal of the Washington Map Society. For additional information on Michael Buehler or Boston Rare Maps, please visit http://www.BostonRareMaps.com.

Highlighting this unique exhibition is a 1792 plan for “The city of Washington in the Territory of Columbia”, now Washington D.C., by surveyor Andrew Ellicott. The plan depicts a grand capital on the European model, with broad avenues, large public squares and dramatic sightlines. Its unstated intent was to convey the grandeur and permanence of the national government – which at the time was only three years old, boasted a bureaucracy of fewer than 200 employees and rested on a Constitution that was feared as much as it was venerated.

The exhibition also tracks urban development in the Northeast with Osgood Carleton’s “Accurate Plan of the Town of Boston”, published in May of 1797. Carleton’s plan of Boston was the largest and most accurate map of the town published to date. It was based primarily on a survey he conducted “by order of the General Court,” as part of a state mapping project begun in 1794. This was one of the last significant maps of Boston before the great land-making projects of the 19th century, which created the Back Bay. Noteworthy landmarks include the new State House on Beacon Hill (on land that once belonged to John Hancock), as well as the Charles River and West Boston Bridges.

American expansion is also chronicled and can be seen in John Fitch’s “Map of the North West Parts of the United States of America,” published in 1785. Fitch, a mapmaker and surveyor who went on to invent the steamboat, compiled this map primarily from William McMurray’s map of the United States, along with information from his own surveys. Fitch engraved the map himself and printed it on a press of his own construction. Like McMurray’s map, which is also included in the exhibition, Fitch depicted the Old Northwest carved into ten proto-states as specified by the Land Ordinance of 1784.

Additional featured works include maps of New England, Massachusetts, New York, Baltimore, North Carolina and beyond by prominent mapmakers like Dennis Griffith, Jonathan Price, Phinehas Merrill, Matthew Clark, John Norman and many others. In addition to city plans and maps, the exhibition also includes antique postal and road maps, navigational charts, and numerous additional cartographical specimens from post-Revolution America.

Q&A: Why would the government want to privatize intelligence work? Isn’t that national security?

Question by BekindtoAnimals22: Why would the government want to privatize intelligence work? Isn’t that national security?
I’m watching CSPAN right now and they are discussing this. Why is the government trying to take over things like health care which is not their responsibility and dumping their real responsibilities such as military and intelligence? Doesn’t this seem a little strange since the Constitution calls national security a primary responsibility of the federal government?
Why would this be permitted. Doesn’t the constitution mean anything anymore? Isn’t our government over stepping its bounds? If so, why are we allowing them to do it?

how environmental problems can be considered a problem for national security?

Question by SYCT: how environmental problems can be considered a problem for national security?
The Earth’s resources are without a doubt dwindling. While the direct cause of this phenomenon may be debatable, there is cause for concern that competition over resources will lead to conflict within the international system. If you can write a memo to President Obama and explain how environmental problems can be considered a problem for national security, what will you write? Discuss this with reference to three problems within the global commons. Are these short-term or long-term problems? What efforts have been made to solve these problems? What needs to happen in order for the Earth’s environment to thrive in the future?

Best answer:

Answer by Think Outside the Ballot Box
Business dealings with the fascist country of Saudi Arabia might be a good place to start that memo.

Generation Opportunity Poll: Young Americans (18-29) Rate America?s Debt as the Top National Security Issue

Generation Opportunity Poll: Young Americans (18-29) Rate America’s Debt as the Top National Security Issue

Washington, DC (PRWEB) July 26, 2011

Generation Opportunity, the new, non-profit, non-partisan organization educating, engaging, and mobilizing young Americans 18-29 years old on the immediate and long-term economic challenges facing the nation – such as the lack of job opportunities and increasing debt and federal spending – is releasing new data from its national study on Millennials revealing the top national security issues of concern to young Americans.

The top national security issue is the debt.

In priority order, young Americans believe that the national debt, increased dependency on foreign sources of energy, and America’s indebtedness to foreign powers have made America more vulnerable. To reduce these risks and to manage these national security challenges, young Americans believe elected officials in Washington, D.C. need to get the nation on a more stable economic footing by cutting federal spending rather than raising taxes and by increasing the production of domestic energy sources such as oil, natural gas, and coal.

“The generation that is expected to pay the skyrocketing federal debt is sending a clear signal to elected leaders of both parties in Washington – federal spending and debt, our indebtedness to foreign powers and our dependency on overseas sources of energy have placed the United States at risk,” said Paul T. Conway, president of Generation Opportunity. “These young Americans have witnessed first-hand how the poor economy and the lack of economic opportunity have negatively impacted their own lives, they think Washington is out of touch with their concerns and they know the status quo and continued failure to lead jeopardizes both our present national security and our future status as a global leader. ”

INSIGHTS ON NATIONAL SECURITY & THE AMERICAN ECONOMY AMONG YOUNG ADULTS

Generation Opportunity recently commissioned a poll with the polling company, inc./WomanTrend (April 16 – 22, 2011, +/- 4% margin of error) and highlights some of the results below.

National Security Concerns and The Future of American Leadership:

Top 3 greatest threats to American National Security: National Debt (62%), Energy Dependency (61%) and Indebtedness to Foreign Powers (50%). The threat of terrorism at (39%) followed as the fourth major national security concern.

Millennials – when asked on a scale of 1 (meaning not at all) to 5 (meaning a very big concern) how much of a concern America’s current “financial debt”/”deficit” rates, 66% indicated very big concerns with America’s “financial debt’ and 71% indicated very big concerns about America’s ‘deficit.’

54% – more than one half – are not confident that the US will be a global leader in just 10 years. Only 9% said they were “very confident” that the US would be.

70% (net) would increase production of domestic energy sources like oil, natural gas and coal; only 22% (net) would decrease production of the same energy sources.

76% view China as a danger: 48% as an economic threat and 28% as both an economic and military threat.

Millennials and The Path Ahead – Putting America’s Fiscal House in Order:

76% would like to see federal spending decreased.

69% prefer reducing federal spending over raising taxes on individuals in order to balance the Federal budget.

59% believe the economy grows best when individuals are allowed to create businesses without government interference.

53% indicate if taxes on business profits were reduced, companies would be more likely to hire.

Only 31% approve of President Obama’s handling of youth unemployment.
