Why do Republicans say they are tougher than Democrats on National Security?

Question by #1 UT: Why do Republicans say they are tougher than Democrats on National Security?
Just because you want to spend unlimited amounts of money on national security does not mean your tough.

They have not captured Osama Bin Laden but they act like he is not important at the same time they say the would “follow him to the gates of hell”

I am so tired of their rhetoric.

Lets give someone else a chance.

Why do liberals think that American freedom of religion applies to religions other than Christianity?

Question by : Why do liberals think that American freedom of religion applies to religions other than Christianity?
When the first Amendment said congress could not establish a religion it meant it couldn’t establish a specific kind of Christianity.

Why are “educated” liberals too stupid to realize that this is one time we ignore both the actual words of the Constitution and the “original intent” since niether actually agree with what typical conservatives agree with?

Tea Party Movement Happier With the Supreme Court than Other Branches of Government, Survey Finds

Tea Party Movement Happier With the Supreme Court than Other Branches of Government, Survey Finds

Columbia Law School Professor Nathaniel Persily

New York (Vocus) July 19, 2010

Despite a general distrust of government, most Tea Party supporters believe the Supreme Court will correctly decide difficult issues, even if they are unpopular and go against the will of the president or Congress, a new survey finds.

The survey, co-authored by Nathaniel Persily, the Charles Keller Beekman Professor of Law and Political Science at Columbia Law School, also found a majority of Tea Party supporters approve of the Supreme Court’s performance.

The results were taken from an online survey by Knowledge Networks on a wide range of issues that probed attitudes toward constitutional issues, including gun control, abortion rights, and the death penalty.

Some 1,027 people answered questions, including 456 who identified themselves as supporting the Tea Party movement. Harvard University political scientist Stephen Ansolabehere co-wrote the survey with Persily.

Some 80 percent of Tea Party backers either have a great deal or some confidence in the Supreme Court, compared to just 37 percent for Congress and 39 percent for President Obama. Overall, 56 percent approve of the job the Supreme Court is doing, compared to 63 percent of those surveyed who do not support the Tea Party.

On issues before the court, the survey found:

Eighty percent of Tea Party supporters agree the Supreme Court should recognize a right to privacy even if it is not explicitly stated in the Constitution.
Some 48 percent believe the Constitution should be viewed as a general set of principles that can change over time, compared to 74 percent of respondents who do not back the Tea Party.
Asked whether the Supreme Court should focus less on the Constitution’s original intent and more on the effect its decisions will have today, just 38 percent of Tea Party backers support that notion, compared to 69 percent not in the Tea Party.
While 72 percent of those who do not support the Tea Party approve of Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court, just 33 percent of movement supporters back her. Persily said that number was likely held down by President Obama’s low numbers from Tea Party supporters. They gave him just a 26 percent approval rating.

The survey is a follow-up to a similar poll done in 2009. Both have a margin of error of 4 percent.

The full Tea Party survey can be read here. The results from all respondents can be read here.

An EMP Attack could be more damaging than an Nuke Bomb

Ex-speaker latest official to raise alarm on threat of nuclear EMP attack by Tehran WASHINGTON The threat posed to the national security of the United States by Iran was likened only to the one posed by Nazi Germany in the 1930s, by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who suggested Tehran could be planning for a pre-emptive nuclear electromagnetic pulse attack on America that would turn a third or more of the country “back to a 19th century level of development.” Gingrich made the stunning statements, which echo warning of other congressional leaders and national security experts, in testimony before a subcommittee of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee last week. He said the “extraordinary challenge that the current regime in Iran poses to the safety of the United States” requires “extraordinary measures to meet it.” “Not since the failure of the League of Nations in the 1930s to confront the aggression of the dictatorships in Japan, Italy and Germany have we seen the willful avoidance of reality which is now underway with regard to Iran,” said Gingrich. “There are lessons to be learned from the 1930s and those lessons apply directly to the current government of Iran.” Gingrich pointed with alarm at a report first published in G2 Bulletin that Iran had tested the firing of ballistic missiles from a merchant ship in which warheads were detonated in midair over the Caspian Sea rather than at a land or sea target. LifeWay Research Study Reveals Church Planting in U.S. is Bigger Than Previously Realized

Logo

Nashville, Tenn. (Vocus) November 15, 2007

Denominational growth in America has reached a plateau and in many cases has declined, but one would get the wrong idea to think the evangelical church is dying in the United States. A recent study finds just the opposite.

Dallas-based Leadership Network, in cooperation with the director of LifeWay Research , has uncovered striking changes in the number and type of new churches started in the United States. These developments promise profound cultural implications for the future.

“While much of the North American church is in decline, a surprising number and increasingly diverse group of new churches are being started in innovative ways,” said Ed Stetzer, director of LifeWay Research, the research arm of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. “These churches are causing many Americans to reconsider churches they have rejected and to re-think what church is. I anticipate that as cultures change, through the inevitable shift of time, migration, and other means, even more churches will be born that reach people from these new cultural contexts.”

The “State of Church Planting USA” study was based on interviews with more than 100 denominational leaders (representing dozens of different denominations), 200 church-planting churches and some 45 church planting networks (The four-part study including a podcast can be downloaded at www.leadnet.org/churchplanting). Stetzer headed up the project and reported that the results surprised him in many respects.

“Church planting has grown in its scope, diversity and impact,” Stetzer said. “North American churches, networks and denominations are making church planting a growing priority. Such emphases push the church closer toward a movement – where churches plant churches that plant churches across North America and the world.”

Dave Travis, managing director at Leadership Network, observed, “Most church-planting studies tend to look at either a very narrow slice of church planting or developments on a global scale. In commissioning this study, our goal was to review the current state of U.S. church-planting efforts and begin to assess what today’s reality means for the next generation of planters.”

Key findings of the six-months-long effort include the following:

1.    Interest is growing rapidly. The pace of church planting has accelerated dramatically in recent years. For example, a simple Google search on the term “church planting” now returns over one million hits. And, while only two mainstream books were published on church planting from 1996 to 2002, no fewer than 10 have been released in the last five years, with several more on the horizon. Equally important, church planting has now become a preferred ministry option, not a consolation prize – denominations and individual churches report that many of their “best and brightest” leaders are pursuing church planting as a primary ministry focus.

2.    Local churches and church planting networks are driving the charge. Historically, church planting has been a denominationally driven activity. Today, the picture is quite different – with much of the energy centered at the local level. Many of the country’s most vibrant congregations see church planting as one of their central purposes. “Church-planting networks” – loose affiliations of churches that may or may not be tied by denomination but do share a commitment to launching new, like-minded congregations – are also at the forefront of the movement. As a result, denominational offices are increasingly taking a subordinate role – equipping rather than directing local congregational efforts.

3.    “Affinity” strategies dominate. Church planters once based their efforts on geography – the goal was to place new churches in “unserved” communities and areas. Today’s church planters are much more sophisticated. As Travis noted, “Through this study, we learned that most successful church planters today are specialists who emphasize a particular style of worship or a specific demographic. For example, they may exclusively plant house churches or ethnic churches – or perhaps build purpose-driven, seeker or missional churches. And the trend toward specialization is likely to continue as more tools and resources that serve specific types of planting strategies are developed.”

4.    Survival and success are markedly greater than realized. Observers have long assumed that most church plants fail within the first year – as many as 80-90 percent, by some estimates. Research reveals a very different picture – suggesting that 68 percent of the roughly 4,000 churches planted each year are still functioning four years later. These baby churches may not yet be self-sufficient, but the congregations themselves are alive and many are thriving.

What do these results mean for the future of the U.S. church? According to Travis, “I am hopeful that this study and the growing number of outstanding church planting conferences and resources will inspire a new wave of planters in the years ahead. That would be very good news indeed. Launching vibrant new congregations is often a more feasible and more fruitful strategy than attempting to revitalize struggling congregations.”

Leadership Network has created four free reports that summarize different aspects of this groundbreaking study:

National security involves more than securing borders

Erickson Column: National security involves more than securing borders

Jerry Erickson
Published: October 14, 2009

By now you’ve heard about Hosam Maher Husein Smadi. He’s the 19-year-old who was arrested on charges of attempting to blow up a Dallas skyscraper. The plan was uncovered when the F.B.I. became suspicious of Mr. Smadi.

As the N.Y Times reported on October 12, 2009, Mr. Smadi’s plan unraveled in 2008:

“But by the spring of 2008, he caught the attention of the F.B.I. by posting incendiary remarks about wanting to kill Americans on Jihadist Web sites. Over the summer, he met with agents posing as members of Al Qaeda and planned to bomb the Fountain Place office building in downtown Dallas, according to an indictment unsealed on Thursday.

His arrest on terrorism charges came after he parked a truck that he had been told was carrying explosives in the building’s underground garage, according to court documents.”

So, good work on the part of the F.B.I. However, what is also troubling about this case is the fact that Mr. Smadi apparently entered the U.S. on a tourist visa and had overstayed. Specifically, he had come to the United States from Jordan in early 2007 on a six-month tourist visa according to immigration officials. When he entered, he would have been given a date by which he was required to leave the U.S. The fact is that he failed to leave as required. Despite the fact that he overstayed, and that his visa had expired, this didn’t set off any type of process or alarm with immigration officials. Unfortunately, the simple fact is that despite the fact that we are more than 8 years post 9/11, the U.S. still doesn’t have a system to verify that foreigner travelers have left the U.S. as and when required.

As you can imagine, as the facts surrounding Mr. Smadi’s case have been revealed, there is now a rising chorus in Congress for Department of Homeland Security to develop an electronic exit monitoring system. Representative Lamar Smith of Texas, the senior Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said the Smadi case “points to a real need for an entry and exit system if we are serious about reducing illegal immigration.”

Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York and chairman of the Judiciary Committee’s sub-committee on immigration, said he would try to steer money from the economic stimulus program to build an exit monitoring system.

As all of us have seen when traveling, U.S. security has definitely been stepped up post 9/11. However, it is a huge gap in the entry/exit system that there are no biometric inspections, and/or process or system that would allow officials to monitor when travelers have left the U.S.

Officials have advised that establishing and implementing a monitoring program will be very expensive. Assuming this is the case, if we’re going to allow people into the U.S., we must be able to develop a system that effectively tracks when they leave. This is particularly so if the Obama administration is realistic about getting support for an immigration overhaul.

As to the particulars concerning Mr. Smadi, his ability to assimilate into U.S. life after overstaying is not a pretty picture.  After he decided he wasn’t leaving the U.S. as required, he was able to enroll in a high school, obtain a California identification card, secure employment with separate employers in two states, rent an apartment and a home, and purchase a gun and ammunition. Let’s just agree that there were no controls in place to see what Mr. Smadi was up to and leave it at that.

Mr. Smadi’s case is a clear reminder that there are people who would like to inflict more damage to the U.S. similar to that of 9/11. Having effective border security is obviously very important in the overall scheme of providing protection from those who would do us harm. However, it’s also critical to be able to monitor those who are allowed into the U.S. and then take timely and appropriate steps if they choose to overstay. Congress should immediately take up the issue of electronic monitoring and develop and implement a plan that addresses a problem that should have been dealt with years ago.
