What do you see as a challenge to U.S. national security in the coming decades?

Question by rushfz1: What do you see as a challenge to U.S. national security in the coming decades?
I know everyone automatically thinks “terrorism” in response to this question. But, are there other, more likely, threats to U.S. national security in the coming decades? What do you see as some imminent national security challenges?

Q&A: What sort of national security briefings do former U.S. presidents receive?

Question by Abby Normal: What sort of national security briefings do former U.S. presidents receive?
I seem to recall reading somewhere that all former presidents still receive national security briefings.

I can’t imagine that they would receive briefings as in-depth as the current president does. Do former presidents just receive the very basics or what?

Does a president just out of office, such as Bush, receive a more in-depth briefing than one long out of office, such as Jimmy Carter or the first Bush?

Thanks!

PayingthePrice.org Publishes New Information Regarding U.S. Health Care Reform, Big Pharma and Prescription Drugs from Canada

PayingthePrice.org Publishes New Information Regarding U.S. Health Care Reform, Big Pharma and Prescription Drugs from Canada

PayingthePrice.org

(PRWEB) December 21, 2011

PayingthePrice.org, an advocacy movement dedicated to educating Americans about the crisis of prescription drug pricing, has published a new article regarding the health care reform bill that passed in March 2010. The bill was passed as a measure to help Americans gain better access to affordable health care and prescription drugs. However, the PayingthePrice.org article suggests that biggest winners may not be U.S. patients, but rather large pharmaceutical companies themselves.

“This article connects the dots between the White House, Big Pharma’s lobbying efforts, Health Care reform and consumer advocate whistle blowers who called for transparency during the negotiations,” states Emmett Murphy, spokesperson for PayingthePrice.org. The research suggests that Big Pharma’s tactics of heavy lobbying in Washington and engaging in price manipulation keep the pharmaceutical companies in their powerful market position, despite the health care reform bill’s intent to put U.S. citizens’ needs first.

The Affordable Care Act, passed by Congress and signed into law by the President in March 2010, gives Americans better health security by putting in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that hold insurance companies accountable, lowers health care costs, guarantees more choice, and enhances the quality of care for all Americans. Initially, the powerful pharmaceutical lobby supported passage of the health care reform bill, but only after cutting a few deals with the White House to ensure that their interests would be protected.

PayingthePrice.org is sponsored by Jan Drugs, a licensed and regulated, brick-and-mortar Canadian Pharmacy. “Americans should be concerned about the threat of reduced access to Canadian pharmacies and affordable medications,” notes Murphy. He asserts, “Pharmaceutical company tactics like price-fixing and pay to delay are forcing Americans to pay more for their medications than citizens of any other industrialized nation.”

From covering personal drug importation issues to exposing leaked free-trade agreement negotiation documents, PayingthePrice.org gives visitors the knowledge to understand the prescription drug cost crisis and the tools to spread the word and help make a change. The website’s mission is to explore how the high price of prescription drugs places millions of Americans at risk everyday.

For more information about this compelling issue, please visit http://www.payingtheprice.org

Founded in 2003, Jan Drugs is a licensed, brick-and-mortar Canadian pharmacy regulated by the Canadian government for safety. Jan Drugs is a verified member of the Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA), which has been chosen by Google, Bing, and Yahoo as the verification authority for online pharmaceutical advertisements. Jan Drugs carries prescription medication made by the leading name-brand and first-tier generic manufactures at prices up to 80 percent less than US pharmacies. Jan Drugs has helped over 100,000 Canadian and American patients get access to the high quality medications they need at prices they can better afford.

Ron Paul: U.S. Foreign Policy Breeds ?Automatic War?

Ron Paul: U.S. Foreign Policy Breeds ‘Automatic War’

Northbrook, IL (PRWEB) November 09, 2011

Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul Tuesday called for a return to sound foreign policymaking in a Yahoo/ABC News interview with Terry Moran, notes Revolution PAC. Ceding authority to international bodies, executive orders and binding treaty obligations, Paul charged, disenfranchises Congress and the people it represents.

“Treaties cannot amend our Constitution,” explained Paul. “Because two generations ago, somebody signed a piece of paper saying that no matter what happens to Taiwan or South Korea or Israel, you can commit the next generation to automatic war. That’s immoral, and it’s not constitutional.”

Paul in the interview reemphasized his support for a policy of limited foreign intervention defined by formal declarations of war, limited and defined scope, and fundability.

Congressman Paul’s points Tuesday are echoed in his current “Texas Straight Talk” column admonishing Barack Obama for violating the War Power Resolution Act. In the piece, Paul declares, “The most dangerous and costly overstepping of executive authority is going to war without a congressional declaration. Congress has been sadly complicit in this usurpation by ceding much of its war-making authority to the executive because it wants to avoid taking responsibility for major war decisions, but that is part of our job in Congress! If the President cannot present to Congress and the people a convincingly strong case for going to war, then perhaps we should keep the nation at peace, rather than risk our men and women’s lives for ill-defined reasons!”

“Ron Paul clearly takes his oath to the U.S. Constitution seriously,” explains Revolution PAC Chair Gary Franchi. “He understands that checks and balances provide a bulwark against overblown executive power and preserve individual freedom and collective prosperity in America.”

Franchi continues, “The choice is clear in this presidential race: Ron Paul’s ‘humble foreign policy’ or more endless, undeclared and unaccountable wars of aggression.”

Rep. Paul’s “Plan to Restore America” proposes eliminating all foreign aid and curtailing foreign wars. A former U.S. Air Force flight surgeon, Paul received the most campaign contributions from active members of the U.S. Armed Forces in 3Q 2011 than all presidential contenders, including Barack Obama.

Revolution PAC is supporting Ron Paul’s consistent, constitutional message with targeted TV advertising campaigns complemented by billboards and radio ads in key primary states. Unlimited donations by individuals, businesses and organizations are being accepted by Revolution PAC to support that effort.

Democracy, Up Close and Personal: A Pocket Guide to the U.S. Constitution

Democracy, Up Close and Personal: A Pocket Guide to the U.S. Constitution

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 7, 2011

What does the Constitution mean? It is the cornerstone of our democracy, but many of the available portable versions don’t include the information to help us understand it. Pearson’s new A Pocket Guide to the U.S. Constitution, by Andrew B. Arnold, remedies this situation by explaining, in straightforward terms, the significance and history of each clause and amendment. In a portable format, readers are equipped with the knowledge and vocabulary necessary to pursue in more depth the topics that interest them most.

The Constitution gains much of its meaning through the ways that it has been interpreted by the Supreme Court, and A Pocket Guide lists the key opinions that give the document’s provisions the force of specific law. Focusing on how the meaning of the Constitution has changed through history in response to a changing nation, Arnold explains the Commerce Clause, the Takings Clause, the Establishment Clause, and the other named clauses that many politicians, news writers, and professors assume Americans already understand.

“The Constitution is not just a matter of scholarly or legal debate; it is part of the way Americans live, and many of the available versions leave out the names of articles, sections, and clauses,” said Arnold. “This book does not tell readers what the Constitution ought to mean, but what it has meant. It is a place to begin to understand the U.S. Constitution, and a guide to answer basic questions that arise day to day, or in a classroom, or in the course of reading more in-depth books on the subject.”

About the Author

Andrew B. Arnold teaches Constitutional History at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, as well as other courses. A specialist in U.S. labor and business history, his ongoing research focuses on the Gilded Age coal and railroad industries. Early in his career, he was asked to develop an advanced college-level course in Constitutional History. Frustrated by the lack of a basic, pocket-sized reference for his students, he wrote this book to help them gain a mastery of the Constitution as a document in itself.

Constitutional Understanding: New Education Materials Provide Activities to Develop Student Understanding of U.S. Constitution

Constitutional Understanding: New Education Materials Provide Activities to Develop Student Understanding of U.S. Constitution

Washington (PRWEB) September 15, 2005

As the people of Iraq wait to read and vote on the newly printed Iraqi Constitution, American educational institutions are looking for ways to commemorate the September 17, 1787 signing of the United States Constitution.

The 2005 school year will mark the first time that all educational institutions receiving federal aid will be required by law to provide programs on the United States Constitution.

National History Day, Inc. has teamed with Newsweek and Oxford University Press to provide teachers with a variety of classroom activities and resources to meet the Constitution Day federal mandate and place our nation’s blueprint in historical context.

The materials are available online by visiting http://www.NHD.org and clicking on “Constitution Day.”

“The United States Constitution reflects our nation’s diversity, our unity, and with 27 amendments it stands as a testament to our continued work of forming ‘a more perfect union’,” said National History Day Executive Director, Cathy Gorn. “I believe that the Constitution Day materials we are providing will encourage students and teachers to engage in a dialogue about what it means to be a citizen.”

Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., introduced the federal legislation requiring education and government institutions to commemorate Constitution Day and President Bush signed the bill into law in December of 2004. When Sen. Byrd introduced the legislation, he stated his hopes that the bill will foster a deeper reverence for and a better understanding of the United States Constitution.

218 years after the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention held their final meeting, the United States Constitution stands as the world’s oldest written blueprint for government.

National History Day, Inc. is a yearlong history education organization that is transforming the way history is taught and learned. National History Day help teachers meet educational standards; disseminates high quality curriculum materials; and sponsors challenging contests that teach students critical skills for the 21st century. National History Day improves education EVERY day and is the only history education organization providing information on Constitution Day that will help students to place the U.S. Constitution in historical context.

The Newsweek Education Program is a highly respected producer of educational materials that supports using Newsweek to teach current events in high school and college classrooms. The program aims to engage students with the issues of the day to prepare them for their future as active citizens in our democracy.

Oxford University Press believes strongly that curriculum materials must not simply convey information; they must also involve students in the subject matter so that they become active and eager participants. As the world’s oldest university press, Oxford remains committed to providing students with the highest quality scholarship. Every book in the Oxford School Social Studies Program draws on the expertise not only of the individual scholar-authors, but also a range of other scholars to whom Oxford University Press has unrivaled access. It is our goal to equip all students with the analytical and literary skills that will enable them to succeed in their continuing education and future careers and ultimately to become the informed and involved citizens that a strong democracy requires.

Students Can Explore the Evolving Story of the U.S. Constitution With ABC-CLIO’s “History and the Headlines”

Students Can Explore the Evolving Story of the U.S. Constitution With ABC-CLIO’s “History and the Headlines”

Santa Barbara, Calif. (PRWEB) September 12, 2007

“Constitutional Rights” are part of an ongoing dialogue in this country. But how much do we really know about the U.S. Constitution, its development and its role in our daily lives? For example, how many students know that the Bill of Rights – which includes many of the civil liberties that are the foundation of what it means to be an American – was not a part of the Constitution when it was ratified in 1788?

Constitution Day is Sept. 17, and students and teachers nationwide will have the opportunity to explore the evolving story of the U.S. Constitution and the role it plays in our lives with today’s launch of “History and the Headlines: Constitution Day,” the first in the fall 2007 line-up of ABC-CLIO’s popular series of free, timely, online history reference and activity collections.

In celebration of the 219th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, ABC-CLIO and the National Archives have teamed up to offer this reference library, offering secondary history students, teachers and school library media specialists thousands of ready-to-use reference materials that put history into context. With this free, online collection, available now through Oct. 31, the history of the Constitution will come alive for students through visual resources, including

images and documents from the National Archives.

“At ABC-CLIO, we recognize that students grasp historical context best when it is presented to them in a relevant, compelling way,” said Becky Snyder, president. “This collection of rich historical content and analysis complemented by engaging activities allows students to explore what the U.S. Constitution means to them and to think critically about the people, events and issues that shaped the development of our country’s guiding principles.”

With ABC-CLIO’s extensive database on the Constitutional Convention of 1787, students will learn more about the personalities of the framers of the Constitution, become immersed in the conflicts that almost caused the Constitution not to be ratified during that hot summer in Philadelphia and to think critically about how the Bill of Rights was developed and how it has continued to evolve.

They will delve into an even deeper exploration of the Bill of Rights with essays based on the work of respected constitutional scholar John R. Vile, Ph.D., professor and chair of the political science department at Middle Tennessee State University. These articles provide students with thought-provoking historical perspectives on Freedom of Religion, Freedom of the Press, Freedom of Assembly and the Right to Bear Arms. Vile is the author and editor of numerous books, including the award-winning “Encyclopedia of Constitutional Amendments, Proposed Amendments and Amending Issues: 1789-2002.”

“To participate fully in our democratic society, it is critical that students develop an understanding of our Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the freedoms that these important documents do and do not guarantee,” said Vile. “This outstanding collection of online resources will provide teachers with background for leading provocative class discussions where students develop an understanding of the unique freedoms that we have as U.S. citizens.”

Other topics planned this fall for “History and the Headlines” include a resource collection developed to align with the PBS debut of the new Ken Burns World War II documentary series, “The War,” and a unique investigation of the role Sputnik played in the escalation of the Cold War.

Outraged American Whistleblower to Renounce His U.S. Citizenship

Christchurch, New Zealand (PRWEB) February 9, 2005

Harmon Wilfred, an American businessman and exiled whistleblower who has lived in Christchurch, New Zealand since August, 2001, says he will formally renounce his U.S. citizenship on March 1, 2005 to disassociate himself forever with the United States Government and its policies.

Harmon Wilfred says he has been considering the value of his U.S. birthright for many months and made a final decision to renounce his U.S. citizenship shortly after the inauguration of President George W. Bush for a second term of presidency. However, he says his decision which is permanent and irreversible, is far more than a political gesture.

“I was raised to believe – and believed fervently- that the United States is the land of the free and the home of the brave. But the actions of the United States Government in recent years, and my own personal experience, have undermined my respect for the U.S. to the extent that I no longer want to be an American.”

Wilfred plans to make a statement of renunciation before a U.S. consular officer in Auckland, New Zealand and will live as a “stateless individual” while he and his Canadian wife, Carolyn, are being considered for New Zealand residency.

Since arriving in New Zealand to invest in new technologies, Wilfred has been involved in the development of wireless data transmission, Broadband Powerline communication (BPL) and Internet telephony). He also oversees the development of humanitarian projects on behalf of his wife’s estate and is currently working with several charitable trusts to trial his newly proposed family/community support initiative in Christchurch, NZ.

Wilfred says he is confident his record of achievement in business and community support will make him and his wife strong candidates for New Zealand citizenship but plans to also offer himself to the world at large as an “honest and productive citizen”.

He believes the United States has reached a dangerous point in its history with what he calls an extravagant, self serving and dysfunctional government at the lead. “While over 2 billion people are starving around the world and 35.9 million Americans are living below the poverty line with 2 million literally homeless, we see $ 880 million US dollars spent on an election campaign and 60 million dollars expended on an inauguration ceremony for the winner; all the while American families are being ripped apart and impoverished in every U.S. State by a twisted family court system and the government would have us believe that this excessive and abusive way of life is sacrosanct.

“Americans are literally brain-washed by paid political spin doctors into believing that they live in a representative democracy when in actual fact today, the US system is nothing more than a politically corrupt form of special interest capitalism. Around the globe we’re seeing the US Government act unilaterally and in its own interests while in direct defiance of the legal authority of the United Nations, in the deluded belief that it is delivering freedom and democracy in places where it has no moral or legal mandate.”

“I can no longer be a party to this kind of lawlessness, dishonesty, waste and hypocrisy.” Wilfred’s hope is that the irrevocable renouncing of his U.S. citizenship on principle will become a wakeup call to all Americans.

Colonial Williamsburg and Pearson Introduce “The Idea of America,” Ground-breaking Interactive U.S. History and Citizenship Program

Williamsburg, VA and Boston, MA (PRWEB) February 8, 2010

American History will come to life for high schoolers through a partnership announced today by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the education, services, and technology company Pearson. Through “The Idea of America,” a new interactive, fully digital, Web-based curriculum, students will learn lessons from history and the principles of American citizenship by exploring 65 individual case studies of the nation’s most important historical events, debating issues that changed America, listening to the perspectives of contemporary historians, and accessing primary source documents of enduring significance.

Colonial Williamsburg’s interactive program, “Virtual Republic,” also can be integrated into “The Idea of America,” providing the opportunity for students in one region of the country to discuss and debate their findings and conclusions with students in another region. With social networking tools, students will post their ideas, creating a nationwide discussion forum. During this process, classrooms will work to develop positions and viewpoints that they then can carry forward into their community, giving students an opportunity to actively participate in the responsibilities of every citizen.

“‘The Idea of America’ is the most ambitious educational outreach initiative Colonial Williamsburg has undertaken to date. By partnering with Pearson, the world’s leading education technology company, as our exclusive distributor, we now have the ability to offer this interactive curriculum to students everywhere,” said Colin Campbell, president and chief executive officer of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He added, “This entirely digitally-based secondary school history and civics curriculum ties critical moments in American history to the events of today. As students examine the case studies created by our staff of educators and teachers across the country, they will discover that Americans have been debating fundamental principles for generations.”

Pearson’s vice president for social studies Michael Gee said, “With ‘The Idea of America’ program, we are harnessing the power of technology and placing it in teachers’ and students’ hands, engaging students with yesterday’s history to make connections to their lives today.” He added, “We believe the program provides the knowledge and skills that students will need to fulfill their responsibilities as active citizens in our participatory democracy.”

Available for school implementation in the fall 2010, “The Idea of America” utilizes case studies, each introduced by students, to make the content relevant to today’s learners and to encourage active citizenship. To support the lessons, teachers select from among resources and interactive tools including dramatic readings of key text, documentaries, and interviews with contemporary figures. In addition, primary sources such as newspapers, works of art, diaries, journal entries, speeches, and wills also are provided.

“The program enables students to do the investigating,” said Bill White, director of educational program development for Colonial Williamsburg. “They become part of the great debate – the ongoing process in which we, the individual citizens of the nation, participate as we work to realize the potential of our democratic values. By examining how previous generations of Americans met the challenges of their time, our students will be more prepared to meet the challenges of America’s future.”

Four pairs of contrasting American values – unity vs. diversity, private wealth vs. common wealth, law vs. ethics, and freedom vs. equality – are presented to guide the discussion of each case study, with every case study linking to a current event Web site where students can examine the issues in the context of the current political debate.

For example, students might investigate America as a nation of laws, but also grapple with the understanding that laws are not always ethical, as was the case with the Jim Crow laws that discriminated against African Americans. They will learn that lawbreakers like Rosa Parks sparked the Civil Rights movement by challenging the ethics of the law, thereby changing the lives of millions of Americans.

Other case study examples, which are available to review online, include The Great Debate, Jacksonian America, and Reagan and the End of the Cold War.

“The mission of Colonial Williamsburg is that the future may learn from the past,” said Richard McCluney, vice president of productions, publications and learning ventures for Colonial Williamsburg. “What better way is there to inform the future than to teach young people their duties and responsibilities as American citizens through the lessons of the past? It’s the essence of our mission.”
