2081 Trailer | Based on Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron”

Now available to rent on YouTube! Based on the short story “Harrison Bergeron” by celebrated author Kurt Vonnegut, “2081” depicts a dystopian future in which, thanks to the 212th Amendment to the Constitution and the unceasing vigilance of the United States Handicapper General, everyone is “finally equal….” The strong wear weights, the beautiful wear masks and the intelligent wear earpieces that fire off loud noises to keep them from taking unfair advantage of their brains. It is a poetic tale of triumph and tragedy about a broken family, a brutal government, and an act of defiance that changes everything. Featuring an original score performed by the world-renowned Kronos Quartet (Requiem for a Dream) and narration by Academy Award Nominee Patricia Clarkson (Far From Heaven, Goodnight and Good Luck), “2081” stars James Cosmo (Braveheart, Trainspotting), Julie Hagerty (Airplane!, What About Bob?) and Armie Hammer (The Social Network). • Absolutely beautiful and thought provoking !
We are all equal before God and the Law. Let us fend for ourselves for the rest. “Live Free or Die for Death is not the worst of evils.”

  • I read the book and saw this trailor. This just makes you wonder. …

  • @BarbarasUrates … Fascism and Communism differ only in how the state manages the economy in one respect. The fascists allow private ownership while dictating to the owner what to do…the Communist go’s all the way and takes the business over altogether. Both dogmas, like all socialist examples have at heart the state controls of the economy. No socialist system yet tried has succeeded in creating permanent high living standards and wealth for its people.

  • @BarbarasUrates …sorry but Nazism, like fascism ,communism, social democracy etc is socialist at its core. Socialism in turn is collectivism. Remember the Mussolini was a lefty socialist who broke away to form fascism but still held to its ideals…he and Lenin mutually admired each other. Hitler and Stalin were allies before Hitler stabbed him in the back..before they they got on well because they shared many ideas in common. Marx helped inspire Hitler’s anti Semitism.

  • @Riellysdad. the nazis were socialists? no, the nazis were fascists. the political spectrum is not as black and white, nor is it as easy as right wing/ left wing… nazism demonizes karl marx, while socialism idolizes him… you might want to use that as a starting point for distinguishing between the two… because socialism’s end game is communism. And this is ultamately about equality.. racial, economic, social, etc..the very opposite of nazi germany’s ultamate goal for the world.

  • @SWilliamJackson A liberal government want to remove your responsibility over your own life and decisions. Not letting you fuck up is not freedom, it’s being treated like a child. In this idealistic liberal world, there are no financial gain incentives, therefore there is no reward for going through hell to become something important. There is also no incentives to do jobs that suck. The right wing is not ‘enslaving’ us with money and Capitalism, they simply put the control in your own hands.

  • The Nazis WERE socialists…..they were the “right wing” of socialism…that’s what the original “right wing” referred to…not capitalism but fascism….communisms blood brother. Both are socialist, which is collectivist.Later “right wing” came to encapsulate ALL other positions to left wing socialism as we know it now.

  • They already made this into a movie in 1995. It had Sean Astin from “Rudy” and “The Lord of the Rings” as the main character. look here … imdb.com/title/tt0113264/

  • @CRYtoGodforLIBERTY That is insane. The purest form of a leftwing government is a truly liberal government. A government where anything is allowed, nothing is prohibited. A Libertarian is just someone with socially lef twing views and fiscally right wing views. Liberty is the root of both the word Libertarian and Liberal. A rightwing government preaches personal freedom but then wants to enslave us with money and Capitalism.

A liberal government wants us to be fiscally and personally free.

@SchnazzyMcdoo452 totally disagree, to me, no difference between “statist” type governments, except small meanings and word they use to justify tyranny. Ultimate leftist government is totalitarian/statist, ultimate “right wing” is self government, more freedom, more like anarchy. Right wing/conservative want less government.

@CRYtoGodforLIBERTY Nazism was right wing. Control governments use whatever rhetoric they want to justify their reasons for control; that includes both leftist and right-wing rhetoric. The Communists used the leftist rhetoric of protecting economic and social rights; putting everyone on an even playing field. The right wingjustifies their control in terms of protecting the people and country or “ensuring freedom and democracy abroad”. The powerful desire power; no matter what side ofthe spectrum

  • @CRYtoGodforLIBERTY Nazism wasn’t left wing, it was a totalitarian right wing government. It was based on the ideals of National Socialism which is to benefit the nation and its identity as a single party state. It has a basis in Italian Fascism. And Fascism is clearly right wing.

Naziism is left wing. Right wing extreme is anarchy, sorry Zamboro. All “control” governments are leftists. The less control, the more to the right they are.

  • @DustinKoffman It wasn’t a novel, it was a short story and it was definitely not a comedy. It’s a good read though.

  • @KarmaLyser

No, not “socialists as in democrats”. You have to have zero understanding of what Naziism was to think that just because it had socialism in the name, it’s somehow leftwing. The Nazis were anti-immigrant, racist, pro “traditional women’s roles”, anti-gay, corporatist and racist. Moreover, Mein Kampf includes long, angry screeds against liberals. You’ve been brainwashed by Fox News.

  • Not to put too fine a point on it, idiot, but “Nazi” is an abbreviation for “National SOCIALISTS”. You know, Socialists… As in “Democrats”? The Nazis were Lefties, sweetums, no matter what you Obama-slurp “Progressives” screech to the contrary. No matter how many times you repeat a lie, it’s still a lie.

  • Homeschoolers are not allowed to be in the Geographic Bee because people think that the homeschoolers are too smart and would beat the other kids. They wanted the Bee to be “fair”, so they kicked the homeschoolers out. 2081, anyone?

By contrast, the Third Reich was a manifestation of the fascist Right’s vision of utopia. Endless war, suppression of women’s rights, extermination of minorities and gays, etc.

If given the choice between these two…

  • I liked most of his novels … not sure about this one, though. Looks pretty dark and decidedly not funny.

  • @InfinityxShark definatly! if you’ve read the story, its gonna be easier to understand(:

  • @DJMotorbike Actually, Vonnegut was neither a Marxist or a Capitalist. He opposed both.

  • What I got from it was Vonnegut’s desire to avoid excess. While he championed equal rights and opportunities he by no means wanted people to hide the extraordinary things they had to offer. He just doesn’t want people to be a douche about it. In short, it’s wonderful that you’re smart or can sing beautifully, but that doesn’t give you the right to think you are better than anyone else.

I think you mean, everything the powerful (corporations or governments) try to force is painful and heartbreaking, whether it’s “Freedom” or “Equality”. Vonnegut was way too strong to hate anything he wrote, it was written for a reason: remember that even the cause you champion most can be perverted by money and corruption.
Are you trying to imply that Vonnegut didn’t want people to know where he stood
in later life? Because he was always bold with words and more so towards the end.
