@bheadh Savings and loan debacle was simple. S&L`s took short terms deposits from customers, paying market rates for the deposits. The deposits were loaned out long term, for 30 yr mortgages on homes, at fixed rate of interest. Then, because of loose monetary policy, and inflation, the Fed Reserve tightened monetary policy, sending interest rates way, wat up, to even 20% rates! S&L`s had to pay high rates for money, while all their capital was tied up for 30 yrs at low rates. Govt caused it.
