‘Atheist’ Nations Are More Peaceful

Science & Reason on Facebook: tinyurl.com “Peace Is Non-Theistic” by www.youtube.com “Vision of Humanity groups together a number of interrelated initiatives focused on global peace. It brings a strategic approach to raising the worlds attention and awareness around the importance of peacefulness to humanitys survival in the 21st century.” • www.visionofhumanity.org — Subscribe to Science & Reason • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com — I hear time and time again the incredible statements being made by the religiously minded whom make comparisons between themselves, other religious groups and also even to the non-religious. I hear often Muslims claiming their religion to be one of peace, of knowledge of wisdom and of respect (laughs), and much of the same spewed from the pipes of the Christian, Jewish and Hindu drones. Though, its interesting to note that I have yet to see any statistical data nor any evidence to support such claims; mainly due to the fact that there is none. With this video, I seek to present factual statistical data that expresses that such claims are not only false, but like most religious speech, are blatant falsities that exist as a propaganda force. Religion now like always maintains a clear and distinct correlation with conflict, not peace! The Vision of Humanity Global Peace Index survey accounts for internal and external conflicts and the subsequent losses incurred, Including that of potential terrorist acts

Washington State, Catholic Resident Fires Back at Atheist Group’s Anti-Religion Placard next to Christian Nativity Scene

Washington State, Catholic Resident Fires Back at Atheist Group’s Anti-Religion Placard next to Christian Nativity Scene

Olympia, WA (PRWEB) December 6, 2008

A Washington State Resident is responding publicly to a state sanctioned atheist attack on the Christmas holiday.

Steve Sanborn of Mead, Washington, this week sent a formal email to the Washington State Attorney General’s office with hopes he might persuade state officials to understand that an atheistic attack on religion is not equal to an artful depiction of historical religious beliefs.

The state this week authorized a placard to be placed in the state Capitol by the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) of Madison, Wisconsin. The placard is placed next to an authorized Christian Nativity scene. Several Christian organizations are also filing complaints to the state.

Sanborn says the offensive placard is not a statement of belief but rather an attack on Christ-centered holy days and Christianity itself.

The placard reads, in part, “At this season of the Winter Solstice may reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”

“Merry Christmas to you too,” Sanborn said. “I’m a Catholic and the placard posted by the Freedom From Religion Foundation essentially states that I am therefore cruel and stupid – and the state has sanctioned this?

“Even Ebenezer Scrooge opted to leave Christmas alone. Why can’t atheists be as generous as Scrooge at Christmas and leave it alone?” Sanborn asked.

The Nativity scene and Atheist placard were installed alongside each other in a hallway between the state Senate and House chambers, separated by a large bust of the state’s namesake, George Washington. These and other displays were granted permits from state groundskeepers to be placed in the Capitol’s grand marble hallways.

Sanborn said he does not recall FFRF ever making a public foray when Muslim or Jewish holidays are in season.

“We live in a predominantly Christian nation, not an atheist one. If it is equal time these people want, then perhaps they ought to erect their own stable with no one in it,” Sanborn said. “This would actually reflect what they believe rather than attack those who believe otherwise.”

FFRF co-president, Dan Barker, was quoted in recent news as saying it was important for atheists to offer their viewpoint alongside the overtly religious Nativity scene.

“Our members want equal time. Not to muscle, not to coerce, but just to have a place at the table,” said Barker.

“For the state to assert that such a placard is somehow equal in the world of ideas merely shows its inability to be logical,” Sanborn stated. “Will the state now allow me to offer my viewpoint on a placard that says Atheism is a form of insanity?”

As Bill O’Reilly did earlier this week, Sanborn says he encourages other Christians to contact Washington State Governor, Christine Gregoire, at 360-902-4111 to respectfully tell her how they feel about the offensive placard.

Atheist Heads U.N. Freedom of Religion Committee

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 12, 2005

Matt Cherry, of Albany, N.Y., is serving as the first humanist elected president of the United Nations Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief.

The NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief works within the United Nations to promote and defend international agreements protecting freedom of religion and belief. Members of the committee represent several religious faiths and belief systems.

Cherry is the executive director of the Institute for Humanist Studies, an Albany-based nonprofit think tank promoting secularism in government and education. Prior to his appointment as president, Cherry served a two-year term as secretary of the United Nations NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief. Like many humanists, Cherry is an atheist.

The philosophy of humanism maintains that science and reason are the best means to promote human welfare. Humanists accept that people can live ethical, moral, happy and well-adjusted lives free from religious or supernatural convictions.

“Freedom of religion and belief is emerging as a key battleground of the twenty-first century. We are seeing that religious intolerance is one of the root causes of terrorism and conflicts,” Cherry said. “The United Nations is the best hope for countering violence by creating respect and understanding for all the world’s beliefs.”

“I’m very happy that Matt Cherry has been elected president,” said outgoing President Antonios Kireopoulos. “Cherry brings a solid background and commitment to the work of promoting freedom of religion or belief. I look forward to collaborating with him as he leads us through our next phase of activity.” Kireopoulos also serves the National Council of Churches as associate general secretary for International Affairs and Peace.

Atheist Community Denounces Supreme Court Ruling Upholding Use of “Under God” in Pledge of Allegiance

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Atheist Community Denounces Supreme Court Ruling Upholding Use of “Under God” in Pledge of Allegiance

San Diego, CA – June 14, 2004 – The online secular community Secularity.com has denounced today’s ruling by the Supreme Court that retains references to God in the Pledge of Allegiance. “Today’s 8-0 decision was moral cowardice.” said a spokesman for Secularity.com. “The Supreme Court made a political decision to avoid controversy, completely ignoring an unconstitutional favoring of religion.” Many legal experts have stated that, however controversial, “Under God” is a statement that God exists, and thus an endorsement of religion.

Secularity.com, an online community of atheists, agnostics, and humanists, holds the position that in a society based on freedom of religion, no religion should be favored or discriminated against, including the lack of religion – and that including “under God” in a daily oath recited and/or listened to by all schoolchildren is plainly in violation of freedom of religion. They argue that to favor the inclusion of “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance is to favor changing our form of government from a free Democracy to a Theocracy. One member of Secularity.com, who asked to remain anonymous due to religious discrimination, stated “To believe in a God is to believe in a false code of ethics. Faith in a false belief system is the primary cause of war, and the primary cause of our social problems. …forcing millions of schoolchildren to hear or recite “there is a God” every day is indoctrination.”

Secularity.com states that in America, freedom of religion does not apply to those who choose no religion, and the religious majority frequently imposes their beliefs on the secular minority. Secularity.com asserts that those with secular beliefs are more lawful, and have stronger moral base, than the religious. They point to studies showing that while 14% of Americans do not worship a deity, less than half of one percent of the prison population is Atheist. Adam Pedersen, president of Secularity.com, states, “The basis of true morality is secularity.”

Secularity favors the removal of all references to God from all public slogans & assets, include the Pledge of Allegiance, public buildings, and currency.
