The Indispensable Century ? The Arab Revolution: What Would Freedom Bring To The Arab World? Part Three

Every successful country whether in the West or Asia has two things going for them: they have a well educated population and strong institutions. The two major things lacking in all Arab countries. There is high youth unemployment in all Arab countries however, at the same time when you visit those same countries, they have a high influx of foreign workers. Why is that so? To put it bluntly the Arabs lack the skills to perform those tasks themselves.

They claim to have an educated population yet their leaders send their kids to the West for school because they know all too well that their school systems are crap. Who drills the oil from the ground in Saudi Arabia and other oil rich Arab states? Westerners of course.

These articles might sound to some as if I am saying that it is a wrong thing to remove the likes of Gadhafi or Assad, that is not what I am saying.  What I am saying is removing those guys alone will not solve the Arab problem. It needs to be seen as a first step towards creating a 21st century society in the Arab world. It is like a person who wants to lose weight by just dieting. For sure dieting is a good first step however, it has to be followed by exercise, stress reduction etc.

For the Arab revolution, spring-awakening, or whatever they would like to call it, to succeed revolutionary leaders have to level up with their people the fact that they have to change. The first step in that process would be the separation of religion and state. Religion and state is oil and water it is a poisonous combination. The second step is education. They must admit that their current level of education is unfit to compete in a 21st century market place. Thirdly they need to build institutions that do not depend on a single charismatic leader.

In the film: “The Way Back” there was a very interesting scene when the escaped prisoners arrive at the border crossing out of the Soviet Union. Colin Farrel changed his mind and said he was not leaving the Soviet Union any longer. Jim Sturgess’s  asked him in an attempt to convince him “What about freedom?” “Freedom” Colin Farrel repeated and asked “What would I do with freedom?” Bear in mind this guy had just risked his life escaping from a Siberian prison, fought wild animals along the way, almost froze to death in the cold and came to the brink of starvation for freedom and now he is asking what would he do with freedom.

Maybe this is a good lesson for the Arabs as they conduct their fight for freedom. What are they going to do with this freedom that they are willing to kill themselves and destroy their countries for? Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Angola and many African countries killed thousands of their compatriots for freedom, what have they done with the freedom? Am I saying the Arabs should live under brutal dictatorship no that is not what I am saying all I am saying is think of the final destination before embarking on the journey.

Those in the West who are bankrolling the Arabs quest for freedom must ask themselves what do they think the Arabs are going to do with the freedom. Or what do they expect them to do with the freedom? Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, to justify intervention in the Balkans conflict, said “this generation must draw the line”. Have they drawn the line? Dead men walking Sarkozy and Berlusconi are using the Arab suffering to gain political capital and persuade their people that they are helping.

When the independent movement swept across Africa, Britain and France hastily granted Africans freedom without giving them the tools with which to navigate that freedom.  50 years after most African countries gained their independence, they still cannot feed themselves. The West is repeating the same mistake rushing to help the Arabs gain freedom without giving them the tools with which to navigate that freedom.

When I look into my crystal ball what I see is this: ten years after gaining the freedom there would be angry and disenchanted young men roaming the streets of the Arab world feeling hopeless and desperate. Where would they direct their anger? Pick your bet: at the West. You cannot give people freedom without the tools with which to navigate that freedom, that is tempting the gods.

“We have no history only the past that keeps repeating itself”. Ten years from now when those angry young men ask the question what would I do with freedom, I hope someone has an answer ready for them.

Individuality and Freedom

Mormon fundamentalism is decidedly hierarchal as are many organized religions but in the case of Mormon fundamentalism there are also the factors of polygamy and patriarchy which are not merely cultural elements but are actual tenets or requirements in order to receive salvation. There is much dysfunction and mismanagement of power because of the lack of democracy in these groups. Any time an organization develops a pecking order there is loss of power for some and excess of power for others creating an imbalance. It may be said that to remove the hierarchy would resolve this dilemma and create a democratic environment.

But hierarchies are not always dysfunctional. Consider a pack of wolves. It is a form of hierarchy where one’s rank must be earned but there is a distinctive democratic element. One is not arbitrarily ranked but is free as an individual to act. Any wolf within the pack can challenge the alpha male. The alpha male can be replaced easily by another male that can defeat the alpha in a test of strength, courage and endurance. The pack members follow the toughest and most able leader. The females will only mate with a male that has proven his fitness for the job. Once the ranking is established everyone accepts their place and there is group solidarity and cohesion.

Mormon fundamentalists have established their own pack; but it lacks democracy. Men do not challenge the leaders and women do not challenge their husbands and children do not challenge their parents. This has a polarizing effect keeping the weak and the strong separated and preventing the exchange of power. The argument is made that all individuals are not equal. A child is not equal to a parent for example in experience or development. Democracy does not claim equality of individuals but equality of opportunity. It is diversity and change that is at the premise of creation and survival. Humans are social creatures and seek out groups to ensure survival as well as companionship. But it is this tendency toward tribalism that has created so many of the existing problems with any social order from large corporations to the military to organized religion. But social groups can work if there is freedom and individuality.

A good example is the common book club. Membership into the group is voluntary. Everyone in the group agrees to read the same book then meets together to discuss different perspectives and viewpoints. The club or group benefits from the contributions of each individual member but only when all members are encouraged to express their opinions particularly when those opinions differ from the other members. The foundation of the group is built upon freedom of choice while individuality is the life’s blood of the group. It is the freedom that allows the group to develop and grow and the individuality that keeps it alive. There may be many levels of intellect, some greater and some lesser but there is equal opportunity for all.

]]>

But there is catch to social orders and groups: the need to belong. We will often tolerate much that we don’t like in order to belong. In herds of wild horses the worst punishment the matriarch of the herd can inflict on an unruly member is rejection. All the horses turn their backs to the member being punished. It is very effective and it isn’t long before the outcast is humbled and begs back into the herd. The need to belong becomes a crutch with the need for approval following on the heels belonging. Acceptance of the tribe limits free thought and the expression thereof. Freedom comes with a high price tag that many folks aren’t willing to pay.

In early human history, freedom was a currency that was exchanged for the security of belonging and survival. Tribes were formed and civilizations arose while freedom and individuality waned. Organized religion is a tribe that centers on spiritual survival rather than physical survival. Freedom is exchanged for the security of the promise of salvation. The group connects and forms bonds based on similarities while rejecting the one thing that would prevent it from becoming corrupt: differences.

Individuality and freedom magnify the polarities of human nature. But it also offers human development an opportunity to evolve beyond survival of the fittest. Before democratic communal living can work the individual must be fully developed and liberated. Civilizations have risen and fallen because they failed to recognize the power of the individual to drive change and being unwilling to adapt to change, they failed. In order for civilizations to last they must never become static.

A good example of this is the TV series ER. It has run now for fourteen years. While other dramas come and go it has had the staying power those others shows have simply run out of. Why? The answer is simple. The show has a revolving cast. It is in a constant state of change bringing new characters and different dilemmas to the forefront. But this created a conflict. Would the show lose its following of viewers if it killed off the cast? Several major characters have died on the show and are replaced. Did ER lose some of its viewers? Yes; only to gain new viewers. The argument can be made that you shouldn’t eliminate characters from a show that is distinctly character driven. It would appear to be television suicide. ER does something unique from other medical dramas. When the characters have been fully exhausted instead of recycling the characters with redundant issues they are replaced by fresh new faces with new crises to resolve. This is the secret to the show’s longevity.

Likewise, Mormon fundamentalism has reached a pivot point. It has fully exhausted its resources and its ideals. It will either reform itself or it will fall. Like empires of the past that have imploded because of hubris and denial of freedoms Mormon fundamentalism has become top-heavy. It is an authority driven society that limits freedom and creates spiritual dependency. Solidarity is based upon twin fears: fear of the outside world and fear of rejection from within. Individuals within Mormon fundamentalism must challenge the system and allow the old to die to make room for the new.

Individuality is the foundation for reform and without freedom individuality is sacrificed on the altar of security. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Anyone willing to trade freedom for security deserves neither freedom nor security.” Mormon fundamentalism does not deserve the security or the protection of the constitution unless it is willing to establish a freer environment, one that offers equal opportunity to its members. It can reform itself and must reform itself by respecting individuality and freedom as the cornerstones of lasting societies.

Freedom High School Joins with FreedomBands.com to Raise Money to support American Troops

Freedom High School Joins with FreedomBands.com to Raise Money to support American Troops

(PRWEB) April 20, 2005

The aptly named Freedom High School’s Student Government Association has teamed up with Freedombands.com maker of the colorful Freedom Bands. With the support of this Orlando High School, Freedombands.com hopes to jumpstart their drive to $ 25 million for the troops.

The idea behind Freedom Bands came from a family in Utah. Basing their product on the wildly successful Lance Armstrong “Live Strong” bands, they created Freedom Bands that show support for the US military. Kib and Lisa Jensen and their four children started the foundation in the home with a goal of raising $ 25 million to send to the soldiers and their families. They’re original red band has now been joined by five other colors and patterns. With the help of schools like Freedom High, they are stepping up sales on their new Freedom Bands.

Freedom Bands inscribed with “Life Liberty Freedom” are now available in red, brand-new white, blue, swirl, camouflage and glow-in the dark. The more prominent black lettering of these new Freedom Bands allows wearers to clearly show their support for our American troops.

The proceeds from the sale of Freedom Bands is used 100% to support the US troops and their families back home, but they also give all Americans a reminder of the daily sacrifice out soldiers make and allow the wearer to show a visible sign of their support.

“It does not matter what party you belong to. These bands are to support those who fight for our country and say we are proud to be American,” says Lisa Jensen.

Freedom High is only the latest in the list of high schools, radio and television stations , as well as the troops themselves, who have generously bought and distributed the Freedom Bands, leading to the $ 30,000 that has been raised and donated to charities and organizations devoted to helping soldiers and their families. FreedomBand donations have already been made to the American Red Cross, USA Cares, Armed Forces Children’s Education Fund, the Fisher House Foundation and A Million Thanks.

For more information on what Freedom High plans to do with the bands, contact the school or Freedombands.com.

Freedom of Speech: On the Endangered Species List

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

These are the words of our Founding Fathers. The idea was a sound one but there is one thing that these very intelligent men failed to take into consideration: Human Nature. The idea of freedom of speech is not a new one and did not spring full fledged from the foreheads of the framers of the Constitution. In Athens, hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, the citizens had full free speech rights. This was in fact true in many cultures of the time but ended at about the same time the Christian Church took control of Rome during the 5th and 6th centuries. One of the main reasons why the period between 600 AD and 1500 AD was called the “Dark Ages” is because the Church choked off and intellectual investigation that was. The rise of Protestantism did not really change this very much when Parliament had to pass a Declaration of Freedoms in 1621 because of speech restrictions issued by Protestant King James I, who was an avid supporter of the Puritans. We are taught in school that the Puritans fled Europe from religious prosecution in search of religious freedom (bringing the Witch Trials with them), but the fact is that they were expelled from England for being instrumental in causing much of the friction responsible for the English Civil War. Intellectualism and the fight for civil rights in Europe had to fight organized religion every step of the way. The Church, whether Protestant or Catholic, always sided with the King and kings are not known for favoring free speech.

]]>

Of course organized religion is not known for favoring free speech either. Free speech means questions and it is the rock solid doctrine of both of these particular sects, that questioning God (translate to: questioning the Church) is a deadly sin, lack of faith, and is punishable by an eternity in hellfire upon death and excommunication and ostracizing here on Earth. The Catholic Church spent 900 years scouring the earth for any written words that would cast doubt on their doctrines. The Founding Fathers were all well aware of all of this. This might be the reason for statements like:

“Is uniformity attainable? Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error
all over the earth.” – Thomas Jefferson (Notes on Virginia, 1782; from George Seldes, ed., The Great Quotations, Secaucus, New Jersey: Citadel Press, 1983, p. 363.)

And: “The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretence, infringed.” – James Madison (Original wording of the First Amendment; Annals of Congress 434 (June 8, 1789).)

Now we find our citizen´s being muzzled by the religionists who are skulking into government (and control) like wolves in sheep´s clothing. We had a President who spent 8 years stripping American’s of Civil Rights, doing away with public assistance for people who need help by turning it over to an “Office of Faith Based Assistance”, effectively putting the Church in control of all social programs, all while telling the public that all of their actions are guided by the Christian Bible.

We tend to forget that people are people and not all people have the same agenda. This is a wonderful concept for a people who actually believe in freedom. We have many people with religious, social and financial agendas that have nothing to do with freedoms for anyone else. We are seeing a huge attempt by people within government and the media to keep us divided on trivial issues while they slowly strip us of our rights. There are very few freespeech resources left.

Bertrand Russell (May 1872 2 February 1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, socialist, pacifist and social critic. Although he spent the majority of his life in England, he was born in Wales, where he also died. Russell led the British “revolt against idealism” in the early 1900s. He is considered one of the founders of analytic philosophy along with his protégé Wittgenstein and his elder Frege, and is widely held to be one of the 20th century’s premier logicians. He co-authored, with AN Whitehead, Principia Mathematica, an attempt to ground mathematics on logic. His philosophical essay “On Denoting” has been considered a “paradigm of philosophy.” Both works have had a considerable influence on logic, mathematics, set theory, linguistics, and philosophy. He was a prominent anti-war activist, championing free trade between nations and anti-imperialism. Russell was imprisoned for his pacifist activism during World War I, campaigned against Adolf Hitler, for nuclear disarmament, criticised Soviet totalitarianism and the United States of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. In 1950, Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, “in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought.”

Almighty God hath created the mind free, all attempts to influence it by temporal punishments or burthens *** are a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion *** No man shall be cmpelled to frequent or support any religious worship or ministry or shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief. But all men shall be free to profess and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion. I know but one code of morality for men whether acting singly or collectively.
