Who does the freedom of information act apply to?

Does the freedom of information act only apply to federal government? Or does it also apply to state and local? Try to cite your information if you give me an answer. Because I asked this question before. And I got different answers……

  • There is a federal FOIA (since 1966) and each state has its own FOIA equivalent, sometimes called “open meeting” or “sunshine” laws.

    The federal FOIA is found in statutes at 5 USC s.552, including the nine statutory exemptions, which are presumed to be the ONLY reasons an information request can be denied.
