Generation Opportunity Poll: Young Americans (18-29) Rate America’s Debt as the Top National Security Issue

Washington, DC (PRWEB) July 26, 2011

Generation Opportunity, the new, non-profit, non-partisan organization educating, engaging, and mobilizing young Americans 18-29 years old on the immediate and long-term economic challenges facing the nation – such as the lack of job opportunities and increasing debt and federal spending – is releasing new data from its national study on Millennials revealing the top national security issues of concern to young Americans.

The top national security issue is the debt.

In priority order, young Americans believe that the national debt, increased dependency on foreign sources of energy, and America’s indebtedness to foreign powers have made America more vulnerable. To reduce these risks and to manage these national security challenges, young Americans believe elected officials in Washington, D.C. need to get the nation on a more stable economic footing by cutting federal spending rather than raising taxes and by increasing the production of domestic energy sources such as oil, natural gas, and coal.

“The generation that is expected to pay the skyrocketing federal debt is sending a clear signal to elected leaders of both parties in Washington – federal spending and debt, our indebtedness to foreign powers and our dependency on overseas sources of energy have placed the United States at risk,” said Paul T. Conway, president of Generation Opportunity. “These young Americans have witnessed first-hand how the poor economy and the lack of economic opportunity have negatively impacted their own lives, they think Washington is out of touch with their concerns and they know the status quo and continued failure to lead jeopardizes both our present national security and our future status as a global leader. ”

INSIGHTS ON NATIONAL SECURITY & THE AMERICAN ECONOMY AMONG YOUNG ADULTS

Generation Opportunity recently commissioned a poll with the polling company, inc./WomanTrend (April 16 – 22, 2011, +/- 4% margin of error) and highlights some of the results below.

National Security Concerns and The Future of American Leadership:

Top 3 greatest threats to American National Security: National Debt (62%), Energy Dependency (61%) and Indebtedness to Foreign Powers (50%). The threat of terrorism at (39%) followed as the fourth major national security concern.

Millennials – when asked on a scale of 1 (meaning not at all) to 5 (meaning a very big concern) how much of a concern America’s current “financial debt”/”deficit” rates, 66% indicated very big concerns with America’s “financial debt’ and 71% indicated very big concerns about America’s ‘deficit.’

54% – more than one half – are not confident that the US will be a global leader in just 10 years. Only 9% said they were “very confident” that the US would be.

70% (net) would increase production of domestic energy sources like oil, natural gas and coal; only 22% (net) would decrease production of the same energy sources.

76% view China as a danger: 48% as an economic threat and 28% as both an economic and military threat.

Millennials and The Path Ahead – Putting America’s Fiscal House in Order:

76% would like to see federal spending decreased.

69% prefer reducing federal spending over raising taxes on individuals in order to balance the Federal budget.

59% believe the economy grows best when individuals are allowed to create businesses without government interference.

53% indicate if taxes on business profits were reduced, companies would be more likely to hire.

Only 31% approve of President Obama’s handling of youth unemployment.

Ron Paul Speech at the 2011 Iowa Straw Poll

Ron Paul’s speech tells a strong story! He is for all American’s and he believes in the Constitution of the United States of America! Ron Paul is the leading person in the debates and should receive the nomination as the Republican Presidential Candidate. Unlike Rick Perry, Ron Paul won’t sell us out. Rick “The Traitor” Perry didn’t have the guts to show up at the Iowa Straw Poll, nor the debate earlier this week. One thing Texans haven’t forgot is that he sold them out with the bill that was supposed to remove the TSA out of the State of Texas. Most Texans have said the will not vote for him because he is a sell out and is controlled by the Bilderberg Group who also approved it for him to run this election round, back in 2007… He attended the same secret meeting that Obama and Clinton did and became a significant player in the organization. Perry is a traitor to his state and therefore is a traitor to the USA!!

The Cherokee Nation Supreme Court upheld a constitutional amendment requiring all citizens of the Nation to have at least one Indian ancestor on the federally-authorized Dawes Rolls, effectively stripping citizenship from the so-called Freedmen, descendants of Cherokee slaves. The ruling affects roughly 2800 non-Indians who enrolled in the Nation between 2006 and 2007 under a March 2006 Supreme Court ruling. In March of 2007, the people of the Cherokee Nation voted to amend the Cherokee Constitution to only grant those with Indian ancestors on the Dawes rolls legal citizenship and voting rights. That amendment was challenged in lengthy battle through the courts, but Monday’s ruling upholds the amendment. Freedmen argue the Cherokee Treaty of 1866 with the US Government grants them citizenship, but the Court ruled it was actually an amendment to the Cherokee Constitution in 1866 that granted them citizenship, and the Treaty of 1866 simply stated that Freedmen and their descendants had to have equal rights as Native Cherokees. . Therefore, the Court ruled, the Cherokee Nation had the right in 2007 to amend its constitution again, revoking citizenship. But Freedmen say the ruling is hitting them hard. “I was totally surprised and shocked,” Freedmen descendant Waynetta Lawrie said. “I’ve known from the time that I was a little girl that we had Cherokee blood.” But after the Court’s ruling Monday Lawrie is no longer a Cherokee citizen. “I can’t trace back the lineage all the

“Constitution IQ” Highest in California, Arkansas Most Improved According to Annual Constitution Day Poll

“Constitution IQ” Highest in California, Arkansas Most Improved According to Annual Constitution Day Poll

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 15, 2008

With the 221st anniversary of the signing of the Constitution approaching on September 17th, Californians know a lot about the landmark document, according to a recent poll of 54,377 Americans by constitutionfacts.com.

While Americans in the South Atlantic region (DC, DE, GA, FL, MD, NC, VA and WV) scored higher than other regions, California led the country with the highest score on the annual constitutionfacts.com constitution day poll — averaging 8.406 — more than a full point above the national average and displacing West Virginia from the number-one ranking last year. The state showing the most improvement over 2007 was Arkansas climbing from a 6.826 average score to 7.629, surpassing the national average of 7.305 on a 10 point rating scale.

“Besides Math, English and other academic areas … probably the most important subject any of us should know is our country’s Constitution and our Constitutional rights, and it looks like Californians are scoring well in this area,” according to Keir Walton, publisher of the annual Constitution Day poll at constitutionfacts.com, a website dedicated to helping people understand the Constitution.

According to the poll, more than 81 percent of Americans knew that laws were made by Congress, 84 percent that criminals have the right to hear witnesses against them, and 79 percent that they have the right to invoke the 5th amendment to avoid self-incrimination.

The Constitution is considered remarkable because it has stood the test of time. It was written for a country with four million people. Now the U.S. is home to more than 300 million people, and there have only been 27 amendments to the Constitution — including the Bill of Rights — in 221 years

While Constitution IQ scores are surprisingly strong, an expanded poll of 32,983 Americans by constitutionfacts.com highlighted confusion between the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Only 37 percent of Americans knew that the Constitution took effect in 1788, instead confusing it with the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which occurred 12 years earlier in 1776.

Walton said that even educators are guilty of the mix-up. One time, he said, an elementary school teacher produced a play in which John Hancock signed the Constitution — even though Hancock signed the Declaration, not the Constitution. Also, a high school superintendent, during a graduation ceremony, said that the words “All men are created equal” appear in the Constitution. Actually, they appear in the Declaration of Independence.

Walton says he hopes that by providing a handy and accessible website containing copies of the country’s three main historical documents — the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation — myths and misinformation about these documents can be eradicated.

To find out your Constitution IQ, and see how you compare with others statewide and nationally, take the online poll at http://www.constitutionfacts.com.

The online, non-scientific poll of 54,377 Americans was conducted by constitutionfacts.com from August 1, 2007 – July 31, 2008. Participants were evenly split between women (49.4%) and men (50.6%) with an average age of 30 years old. Regionally, South Atlantic had the highest average score of 7.55, followed closely by the New England region, averaging 7.49. Alarmingly, four of the U.S. regions — East North Central, East South Central, Mountain and West South Central dropped below the national average of 7.305 this year, up from two regions last year. Alaska had the highest percentage of perfect scores followed by DC, Mississippi, Hawaii, South Dakota, North Dakota, Illinois and Missouri.
