A Dangerous Woman: New Biography of Adah Isaacs Menken Tells the Fascinating Story of America’s “Original Bad Girl”

A Dangerous Woman by Barbara and Michael Foster

New York, NY (Vocus/PRWEB) January 20, 2011

It’s tough being a sexy superstar in today’s media age. But try doing it in the middle of the prudish Victorian era. Yet for Adah Isaacs Menken, the “mother of theatrical and film nudity,” swimming against the current brought her overflow audiences from Broadway to Paris. She married five husbands, including the world heavyweight boxing champion. Her notable lovers ranged from kings to authors Alexandre Dumas and Algernon Swinburne, and some said George Sand, with whom she shared a penchant for crossdressing. Adah’s front-page scandals and under-the-counter nude photos made her an erotic sensation unequaled until Marilyn Monroe and her calendar a century later. Today’s wannabe bad girls aren’t in the same league.

A Dangerous Woman: The Life, Loves, and Scandals of Adah Isaacs Menken, 1835-1868, America’s Original Superstar (Globe Pequot, cloth, $ 24.95) is Barbara and Michael Foster’s immensely enjoyable new biography of America’s first supernova. Wrote cub reporter Mark Twain about how Adah captivated gold rush San Francisco: “A magnificent spectacle dazzled my vision—the whole constellation of the Great Menken came flaming out of the heavens.” The Fosters’ definitive yet easy-to-read biography, with photos by Napoleon Sarony, the Rembrandt of the camera, brings to startling life the pin-up girl for Civil War troops North and South. “The Naked Lady” grew closely involved in the conflict: No wonder, Adah was born, as the NAACP recognized, “a colored girl from New Orleans.”

The daughter of a beautiful Creole mother, father unknown, Adah had a series of stepfathers, one who abused her, another who taught her the classics. Jewish by religion, Adah grew up in Texas where she became a trick rider in the circus. In Havana, she had a youthful love affair with Juan Zenea, a great Cuban poet shot as a revolutionary. Back in Texas, Adah married the musician Alex Isaac Menken, played in regional theaters, and fled from race riots to Alex’s hometown, Cincinnati.

Here, in the bosom of a wealthy family, Adah became a disciple of Rabbi Wise, founder of Reform Judaism. In his weekly Israelite she wrote articles and poems defending the Jewish people. Marital discord and her burning ambition caused Adah to leave for New York, where she performed in everything from comedy to tragedy to song and dance. A friend of Walt Whitman, she defended his poetry, usually denounced as filth. Secretly, Adah married handsome, bare-knuckle champ John Heenan, who defeated the British champion to claim the world crown. Returned to America on the eve of the Civil War, Heenan became America’s first great sports hero. To please his English mistress he denounced Adah, and accusations back and forth stole the front pages from Abe Lincoln’s election.

Adah, depressed and suicidal, was saved by Prince Mazeppa, a role that led to fame. Sensational and sexy, the drama Mazeppa was based on a tribal prince who fought Tsarist tyranny. Adah dueled, declaimed, and rode a “wild stallion” up a four-story stage mountain—while stripped apparently naked. From Albany to the Midwest and Nevada’s booming Virginia City, the crowds went wild over this man/woman performance. The miners pelted Adah with bags of gold dust, which, dressed as a sporting gent, she gambled away all night. Shedding a fourth husband, a literary critic, Adah sailed from the Golden Gate to London, carrying along her final husband-to-be, a Rhett Butler-style Confederate agent.

Across Britain, Adah’s popularity swelled, and she thrilled young Arthur Conan Doyle, who would make her the heroine of his first Sherlock Holmes story. Le Menken became the toast of Paris, the world’s highest paid performer. Making clever use of the era’s new media—newspapers, the telegraph, trains, and steamboats, above all the camera—Adah became the first universal Love Goddess, the godmother to Harlow, Monroe, and Princess Diana. From royalty to authors such as Charles Dickens—who wanted to do a double act with her—everyone of note attended Menken’s salons. She was pursued by would-be lovers, including Emperor Napoleon III, and new front-page scandals.

The lifespan of the love goddess—the few who dominated the libido of their time—is not long. They fly high and sparkling until, at a young age, they crash to earth. Adah’s daredevil act and devil-may-care life ended at thirty-three. She died in a Paris garret, the poet Longfellow at her side, writing a eulogy, while a crowd stormed a nearby theater, demanding to see their Naked Lady. Adah’s influence on glamour, fashion, and lifestyle lives on—through her poetry and those who write about her, and a series of movies in which she has been portrayed by Ruth Roman, Sophia Loren, and recently Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes. In the Fosters’ A Dangerous Woman, Adah Menken is born again.

“What an extraordinary life!”

—Michael York, distinguished film actor

“Your retelling of Menken’s story is fascinating.”

—Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Chair, Harvard Dept. of African American Studies

“The Fosters’ skillful narrative biography of nineteenth-century superstar Adah Menken captures the richness and complexity of this Civil War-era Jezebel, an archetypal American bad girl.”

—Eve LaPlante, author of American Jezebel

“The most fascinating woman I have ever read about. This book is utterly compelling.”

—Jack Engelhard, author of Indecent Proposal

Previous books by the Fosters include the widely translated Three In Love: menages a trois from ancient to modern times (Harper/Collins) and The Secret Lives of Alexandra David-Neel (Overlook), rated one of the best books of all time by the New York Review of Books.

Michael Foster, born in Brooklyn, is a novelist, biographer, and historian who graduated from Cornell with honors in philosophy. He received an MFA from the Writer’s Workshop, Iowa. His novel Freedom’s Thunder (Avon, 1980), was praised by Nobel laureate Isaac B. Singer. His writing style was described by Entertainment Weekly as “racy and engaging.”

Barbara Foster, associate Professor at CUNY, has published many articles on travel and more than 200 poems in journals in various countries. Barbara has presented dozens of acclaimed slide shows on the life of Alexandra David-Neel from Washington’s Smithsonian to Cal Tech, Sidney, Buenos Aires, and Prague. Barbara appears on TV, radio, and in print/Net interviews.

If you think that God grants and justifies human rights, does God endorse the right to freedom of religion?

Question by Pull My Finger: If you think that God grants and justifies human rights, does God endorse the right to freedom of religion?
Or if you subscribe to the theory that human rights come from God, would you then have to believe that freedom of religion is the one right you DON’T have, since most religions teach that their god considers the practice of other religions an abominable practice?

Best answer:

Answer by Lance
I have to say, on the face of things, let’s say from the Bible, that God’s record on human rights is not very good. He seems at best very capricious, and toys with people, testing them arbitrarily, punishing innocent and guilty alike; at the very worst, he seems to emulate quite accurately a modern day totalitarian dictator. Ancient Israel reminds me a lot of Soviet Russia or North Korea in terms of a Mr. Big ruling by fear and reward.

TV and the Centre for Inquiry, via a secret source, obtained invitation-only tickets to a live faith healing/supernatural debt relief event featuring Peter Popoff at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on May 26, 2011. Footage shows Popoff engaging in “healings”, hosting testimonials and requesting large sums of money from the audience. Also features a sick man being turned away, and the description of an altercation in which – rather ironically – the organist for this “faith healer” wished upon us death by cancer. Background: Peter Popoff was a famous 1980s faith healer proven a fraud by skeptic James Randi on the tonight show with Johnny Carson. Randi and his assistants used a radio scanner to intercept transmissions from Popoff’s wife Elizabeth giving the prophet information about members of the audience, including their address and ailments. After being exposed, his popularity declined sharply, and Popoff declared bankruptcy in 1987. 20 years later, Popoff returned, ironically now combining supernatural debt relief, of all things, with his old faith healing tricks. He has become a profitable prophet once again.

John Carmichael
Freedom of Religion
“Rev.” John Carmichael – President of the Church of Scientology in New York
gothamist.com/2007/08/14/rev_john_carmic.php – immediately after his attempt to recruit me to Scientology in New York 10th March 2008.

I told him not to question my intelligence…

I demonstrated against the Church of Scientology (CoS) in New York on the 10th of March, so it may seem a little strange to learn that I actually went to visit one of the CoS branches here in London over the weekend. What lead up to that was the tragic suicide of a Norwegian girl in Nice, France a few weeks ago, a few hours after taking the CoS’s “personality-test”. www.oca.scientology.org/ Her family claims it was due to the in part horrible test-results she got. The CoS response was something along the lines of "nobody else has done that, so why would she?", amid claims that she had long been suffering different mental issues, and that the church had only had a very short conversation with her…

Let’s just say I got curious, and wanted to find out a bit more than all the stuff you can read online will tell you. (http://www.xenu.net/)

Not that I was “curious” in the searching-sense. I am not (that) stupid.

While the questions themselves seemed a little silly (and _real_ psychologists condemn it as “a rubbish test of personality that will not give you any real answers”) I found the exercise rather entertaining. It said to print the survey-results out and bring them along to my local “church”, and they would give me the verdict. However “Tekmology” again proved incompatible with “religion”, so I ended up having to do the test again upon arrival…

The “score” wasn’t particularly shocking (I had, after all answered truthfully to all the questions, I even (stupidly?) used my real name and address…). What I found amazing was the classic sales-pitch I got when he went through it with me after.

It’s called FUDGE – first you sow Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, and then you give your “victim” Great Expectations.

Seeing as I knew what he was trying to do I wasn’t falling for it, and despite my reassurances that whatever the test revealed didn’t actually make my life a living hell (his clear implication), he kept asking the same inane questions again and again (he was clearly new). I told him I didn’t have enough money to pay for the £10 book that would redeem my life from the utter catastrophe it currently is (drug-dealers tend to give you the first dose cheap/free to get you hooked…and his ineptitude stopped me from feeling pity for him), but realising he wasn’t going to make a sale, he decided to go for broke, and asked me if I wanted to see a film…

A very bad mistake…

Up until this time I hadn’t found Scientology very offensive at all, it seemed more like an aggressive book-club rather than a maniacal cult. Stupid? Yes. Preying on the weak and vulnerable? Most definitely. But then they don’t differ too much from the other cults out there. However small or large those cults are…

To sum the film up (sorry, yes, I’m aware this is starting to look more like a novel than a comment…but…).

Young man plays American football and gets badly tackled.
Young man ends up paralysed in hospital.
Young man is seen to by completely incompetent psychiatrists (for a spinal injury?!?) and is (gleefully) told he will never walk again.
Young man tells his wife to be that she should find someone else to marry, as he will not be a good husband for her *violins playing*
Psychiatrists decides they will operate on young man’s brain (for a _spinal_ injury in the lower back?!?!?). Not to cure said young man, mind you “as that would put us out of a job”.
Young wife-to-be brings the book “Dianetics” along.
Young man reads book and starts not only walking, but jumping around!

Needless to say it wasn’t *exactly* a documentary…

I was offended at how it portrayed the medical profession (I have not been treated with anything but respect, and have had nothing but good experiences with doctors, and though I’m aware there are stupid doctors out there, I hold them in rather a higher esteem than the people behind this movie. I also believe the brain has immense power, and that you can probably go a long way to healing yourself (placebo-effect, anyone?), but this film was an affront to humanity.

What counfounds me is how anyone can fall for the pathetic lies of this book-shop-that-calls-itself-a-church…

Go figure.

This is my personal opinion, I’m not telling you what to think. Feel free to check it out for yourself, though I would strongly recommend you do something more useful with your time. Like play pocket-tennis. c",)

Freethinkers title contest …
Freedom of Religion
This is a photo I took in a Roman Catholic church in Bretagne, north France. The cobwebs struck me as a sign of the reduced importance that religion holds in Europe now. However, the idea that religions are sacred and should be exempt from satire is ever more present with the immigration to Europe of communities with different religions, especially Islam.

In the process of losing my Christian faith, on this issue I have now embraced the position as expressed by H.L. Mencken:

" … even a superstitious man has certain inalienable rights. He has a right to harbor and indulge his imbecilities as long as he pleases, provided only he does not try to inflict them upon other men by force. He has a right to argue for them as eloquently as he can, in season and out of season. He has a right to teach them to his children. But certainly he has no right to be protected against the free criticism of those who do not hold them. He has no right to demand that they be treated as sacred. He has no right to preach them without challenge."

I want to test how many people are open to this idea on Flickr. If you agree with me and you can think of a satirical title for this photo, please post your suggestion below.
The contest is open-ended and therefore I will not choose a winner. For the sake of freedom of speech and creativity your effort is greatly appreciated. Some good suggestions also from the members in this group.

If you think this is wholly inappropriate, please make your argument!

Peace!

There’s a thing Eddie Izzard used to go on about:

How being cool & being a berk are right next to each other on a big circle and it’s very easy to suddenly find yourself doing one when you meant to be the other.

Fine line between genius & madness, and all that.

Anyway, I have to confess, when I first clapped eyes on Wolfie Smith here, I had him immediately assigned to the berk side of the line.

I mean, jesus wept, he’s got Frodo Baggins’s leather pixie-pouch and a ‘scuse me yes I’m not hallucinating, WOLF’S TAIL! hanging off his arse.

WOLF’S TAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention some weird litlle babydreads at the back of his barnet, giving him an unnecessarily additional air of Mulletedness.

If you force-fed me DiMethylTryptamine for a year, I don’t think I’d come up with doing anything as unforgivably ludicrous as this. Not in public. Certainly not in the middle of bloody Peckham at any rate.

But then, and I must be getting soft-headed in my dotage, it struck me that mostly I didn’t like the guy because he was young, doing an art course down the road, and gets to enjoy the company of pretty art student girls in dayglo outfits.

I was thoroughly jealous, in fact.

And, it further occurred to me: looked at in a fairer, kinder, less likely to stain the world with hideous bad vibes of putrefying bad karma & bitterness, sort of a way: the young feller me lad there is actually cool as ruddy heck, has really colossal balls, levels of chutzpah I could never dream of, and bloody good luck to him, what a dude.

Although the mullet-esque-ness he is indulging in is still a little hard for maye refayned sinsibilities to daygist, dontchaknow?

So, overall, you go for it Wolf Lad. Good on ya, cat.

For my part, I’m thinking of enrolling at Art College.

Only joking, art is the religion of the people who take masses of opium.

Christian Non-Profit Fighting to Save Christianity from Self-Destruction

Christian Non-Profit Fighting to Save Christianity from Self-Destruction

Changing the Face of Christianity Logo

Plano, TX (Vocus/PRWEB) December 28, 2010

Christianity is under attack from the inside. Christians are leaving the religion because of Christian hypocrisy, Christian intolerance, Christian judgmentalism, and Christian homophobia. Instead of living their Christian faith genuinely in the world, defectors see superficial name-tag-only Christians who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. Non-Christians don’t take them seriously, because they often don’t follow their own teaching and preaching, which endangers the effectiveness of Christian evangelism efforts.

Outsiders see blatant hypocrisy between Christian beliefs and actions. Non-believers see prideful and self-righteous Christians who act “better” than others and judge others with an attitude of arrogance and intolerance. Homosexuals and people in the gay community feel rejected and condemned as outcasts by the Christian church and its followers.

Many in the Christian church today pay little more than lip-service to worship or living a Christian life. The phrase “love your neighbor as yourself” is quickly becoming a phrase no longer associated with the Christian religion. A non-profit organization called Changing the Face of Christianity is working to save the Christian religion from self-destruction, by helping Christians become more like Jesus Christ.

Changing the Face of Christianity has launched a bold awareness and education campaign aimed at existing Christians. Its strategy is to expose the perceptions of non-Christians to those within the Christian faith and encourage and assist them to take personal action to reverse the negative stereotypes. Founder and President R. Brad White says, “The Bible tells us that non-believers will always hate us, but not for the reasons they hate us now. Who could hate someone for truly loving their neighbor as themselves? The fact is we don’t do a very good job at loving our neighbor.”

The mission of Changing the Face of Christianity is to reverse Christian intolerance, hypocrisy, homophobia, judgmentalism, and other negative Christian stereotypes, by helping Christians to be more like Jesus Christ. Brad says “If non-believers hated us for truly living our faith and for being the best lovers of people the world has ever known, then our campaign would end. We would joyfully accept the criticism.”

Non-believers despise Christianity for all the wrong reasons. But the problem goes deeper than what non-Christians think. There is a growing exodus within the church too, especially within the younger generations. Younger Christians raised to be more accepting of other people, other lifestyles, and other beliefs, are turned off by Christians who maintain attitudes of bigotry and intolerance. This exodus is even more convicting given the growing trend in churches today to appeal to younger generations with “feel good” messages and more contemporary and entertaining worship services. Brad says “It appears that younger generations want more authenticity and compassion than simply more entertainment.”

In the American Religious Identification Survey of more than 54 thousand respondents released in 2009, the number of people claiming no religious preference (“The Nones”) almost doubled from 1990 (8.2%) to 2008 (15%).

In the book unchristian, written by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons based on research from thousands of interviews by the respected Barna Research Group, Kinnaman concludes “The vast majority of outsiders [to the Christian faith]…are actually dechurched individuals.” This gives support to notion that people are leaving the faith, not simply refusing to join as new Christians.

In the book American Grace, researchers Robert Putnam and David Campbell found that “young Americans are dropping out of religion at an alarming rate of five to six times the historic rate (30 to 40 percent have no religion today, versus 5 to 10 percent a generation ago).”

Changing the Face of Christianity Inc performs ongoing independent research and engages in positive dialogue with atheists and agnostics to maintain an accurate pulse on Christian culture and those in greatest opposition to the Christian religion.

Here are a few “outsider” quotes about Christians from Changing the Face of Christianity interviews:

“I would never consider being a Christian, but I might consider not being so critical if more Christians were open and genuine and willing to actually talk about their beliefs.”
“If one was a faithful Christian in their personal life but was able to respect the freedoms of others, what objection could truly be lodged against them? No one cares what you believe, only how your beliefs affect the personal lives of others.”
“I enjoy cross dressing, it makes me feel good about my appearance. It is my right. However the value of that right is severally damaged when I am constantly under attack by members of various religious groups. Are you personally familiar with what it feels like to have people follow you around shouting rude things, throwing empty coffee cups at you, or cornering you with the intention of goading you into a fight?”
“My grandmother always tried to make me feel bad that my mom didn’t take my brothers and me to church. She would tell me that my mom was a bad person. My mom was raised constantly being told that she was a bad person. I’ve seen the emotional scars it left on my mother.”

Brad White says, “We could easily be confused or misunderstood as being anti-Christian because of how forcefully we discuss these tough issues. However, we also have a positive strategy. We also enjoy highlighting Christians doing good. When engaging with non-believers, we listen instead of preach. We are gracious instead of antagonistic. We are accepting and reasonable instead of intolerant and hysterical. We want to show non-believers that there are positive, like-minded Christians out there that really care about them instead of simply trying to convert them.”

Brad continues, “When we started, we knew we would encounter some opposition within the church and some confusion about our purpose. However, we’ve been overwhelmed and encouraged by the positive response. I continue to meet people who say ‘you are dead on, keep it up,’ and we keep discovering other complimentary ministries that are attacking the problem from different perspectives. I have incredible faith and hope for Christianity even as we enter a very dark time within our church.”

Changing the Face of Christianity Inc has also released a “Christian Face Quiz”. Answer 10 questions and the quiz will return a score, telling you how Christian you are.

About

About Changing the Face of Christianity Inc.

Changing the Face of Christianity Inc is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt non-profit Texas corporation, started in 2010 by Founder and President R. Brad White. Their mission is to reverse Christian intolerance, hypocrisy, homophobia, judgmentalism, and other negative Christian stereotypes, by helping Christians to be more like Jesus Christ. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” Changing the Face of Christianity Inc is working to change that negative perception. They do this by 1) making Christians aware of the negative stereotypes inadvertently created through their words and actions, 2) by educating Christians on the issues and effective ways to change their words and actions to create a positive stereotype in the world, and 3) by assisting Christians in their transformation into Christ-likeness. Changing the Face of Christianity Inc also strives to bridge the “trust” gap between believers and non-believers, to create positive and constructive dialog, and intellectually honest and friendly conversations with non-Christians.

About R. Brad White

For most of his life, Brad was an unshakable Atheist. But after a miraculous sign from God in 2005′, he shed his blind disbelief and became a believer. Brad felt called to start “Changing the Face of Christianity” in 2010′.
