Q&A: What sort of national security briefings do former U.S. presidents receive?

Question by Abby Normal: What sort of national security briefings do former U.S. presidents receive?
I seem to recall reading somewhere that all former presidents still receive national security briefings.

I can’t imagine that they would receive briefings as in-depth as the current president does. Do former presidents just receive the very basics or what?

Does a president just out of office, such as Bush, receive a more in-depth briefing than one long out of office, such as Jimmy Carter or the first Bush?

Thanks!

  • If it were up to me, I’d brief them only if there seemed to be any threat toward them, and only with what they’d need to know. Of course, this is not what you asked. Good question.

  • None. Bush wouldn’t understand them anyhow.

  • Bush qualified for the Witness protection program.
No one has seen or heard of him ever since !

The facts are sometimes the sitting President will call former Presidents and ask for advice and that is the only time they would get any kind of briefing.

Your facts are wrong. They are cut off at 12 noon on January 20th. During the Carter administration the fiasco called Iran Hostage Crisis. At 12:30 pm one of the then former secretary of state made a call and was rebuffed.
