Ron Paul: U.S. Foreign Policy Breeds ‘Automatic War’

Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul Tuesday called for a return to sound foreign policymaking in a Yahoo/ABC News interview with Terry Moran, notes Revolution PAC. Ceding authority to international bodies, executive orders and binding treaty obligations, Paul charged, disenfranchises Congress and the people it represents.
“Treaties cannot amend our Constitution,” explained Paul. “Because two generations ago, somebody signed a piece of paper saying that no matter what happens to Taiwan or South Korea or Israel, you can commit the next generation to automatic war. That’s immoral, and it’s not constitutional.”
Paul in the interview reemphasized his support for a policy of limited foreign intervention defined by formal declarations of war, limited and defined scope, and fundability.
Congressman Paul’s points Tuesday are echoed in his current “Texas Straight Talk” column admonishing Barack Obama for violating the War Power Resolution Act. In the piece, Paul declares, “The most dangerous and costly overstepping of executive authority is going to war without a congressional declaration. Congress has been sadly complicit in this usurpation by ceding much of its war-making authority to the executive because it wants to avoid taking responsibility for major war decisions, but that is part of our job in Congress! If the President cannot present to Congress and the people a convincingly strong case for going to war, then perhaps we should keep the nation at peace, rather than risk our men and women’s lives for ill-defined reasons!”

In this column I suggest an intended outcome that the ongoing political theater might be designed to produce. President Obama has said that he will not resort to the various powers open to him to keep the government running should Congress fail to deliver a debt ceiling increase. This is a suspicious statement, as it is not credible that a president would leave troops at war unpaid and without supplies, Social Security checks unsent and stand aside while the US dollar collapses and the credit rating of the US government is destroyed. There are national security directives and executive orders already on the books, as well as the 14th Amendment, that Obama can invoke to set aside the debt ceiling. Congress would sigh with relief that Obama had prevented the lawmakers from destroying the country. So what might be going on? One possibility is that the political theater is operating to bring about otherwise politically impossible cuts in the social safety net. The Cherokee Nation Supreme Court upheld a constitutional amendment requiring all citizens of the Nation to have at least one Indian ancestor on the federally-authorized Dawes Rolls, effectively stripping citizenship from the so-called Freedmen, descendants of Cherokee slaves. The ruling affects roughly 2800 non-Indians who enrolled in the Nation between 2006 and 2007 under a March 2006 Supreme Court ruling. In March of 2007, the people of the Cherokee Nation voted to amend the Cherokee Constitution to only grant those with Indian ancestors on the Dawes rolls legal citizenship and voting rights. That amendment was challenged in lengthy battle through the courts, but Monday’s ruling upholds the amendment. Freedmen argue the Cherokee Treaty of 1866 with the US Government grants them citizenship, but the Court ruled it was actually an amendment to the Cherokee Constitution in 1866 that granted them citizenship, and the Treaty of 1866 simply stated that Freedmen and their descendants had to have equal rights as Native Cherokees. . Therefore, the Court ruled, the Cherokee Nation had the right in 2007 to amend its constitution again, revoking citizenship. In order to understand why people in Cameroon are really grateful for both freedom of speech and freedom of the press, their independence was marked by special laws which significantly limited citizen’s rights. Before President Paul Biya, Cameroonians then were unable to move freely, hold meetings, organize associations or express themselves freely. During that time, undertaking in either of these things called for arbitrary arrests or imprisonment.
This situation in Cameroon was not any different when it came to press matters. This sector was highly oppressed by the government preceding President Paul Biya especially print media. The few newspapers which were allowed to print them were only able to come up with articles on covered sports and news stories. Any dissatisfaction on the people’s side could not be aired and for many years this was the way things were handled.
This kind of governance would leave a negative impact on Cameroon. Cameroonians could not set up businesses without authorization and this consequently affected the country’s economic development adversely.
In early 90’s Paul Biya, the current President of Cameroun undertook a structural reform to change what was the current justice system of Cameroon. This also touched on the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press, the decree which was enacted during 1962 regarding subversion and the enactment of Law 90 which was freedom of association.
In regards to the press, Law 90 signed by President Paul Biya saw a change of the licencing regime to a reporting regime which was more agreeable. The law brought an end of state monopoly on communication media through the declaration of freedom in audio-visual communication as well as an end to condemnation. The state has been able to create a National Council for Communication, a body which is responsible for implementing and monitoring national policy in communication.
Liberating the freedom of the press in Cameroon has seen a growth of radio, newspapers and television stations. Twenty years later, Cameroon can now boast of having over 700 hundred newspapers which include 20 weeklies, the Cameroon tribune which is the official government’s publication and four dailies which are privately owned.
The current audio-visual setting entails, public network Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV), 40 community radio stations, 50 radio stations which are privately owned and more than ten private TV stations.
The press in Cameroon has a keen interest on politics which it freely reports on. Among the many items that the press brings to attention in Cameroon is the ruling political party whose moves and decisions never escape the critical eyes of journalists.
The President Paul Biya is further working towards liberalizing of the media sector and as a result he has introduced a support fund to help many press organs financially.
On other news, the public authorities are now tolerating private television and radio which has seen a majority operate on regulatory non-compliance. However, there are some problems which arise from dubious services from unprofessional individuals whose conduct can lead to extremes.
The citizens of Cameroon are now enjoying their new freedom of speech and freedom of the press. You can get this from social joints and on the streets where the people are now able to criticize the government of President Paul Biya without any restraints or fear. Freedom of expression to say the least is what all Cameroonians shall enjoy for days to come.
By promoting both the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press, current President Paul Biya can now proudly boast of introducing new democracy and the new dawn of a well-informed nation.
